An All Too Likely Republican Scenario

Spelled out by Andrew Sullivan, at the Daily Beast:

"Are They Aiming for Impeachment?

They did the last Democratic president; and they feel even more strongly that this one is illegitimate, despite his thumping majority in the last election. Here's the scenario. The House GOP pushes for  completely unserious Boehner plan (including a balanced budget amendment) that they know will be vetoed; they then filibuster the Reid plan in the Senate, forcing Obama to invoke a 14th Amendment executive prerogative, which they will then turn around and impeach him for."

I've been talking about this sort of scenario ever since Obama won in 2008.  The Republicans are like serial killers who got a taste for blood with Clinton, and now cannot control their urge to do it again.  They needed no pretext with Clinton, and they need none with Obama, just an excuse.  When, when will people face up to the traitorous pack of wolves gnawing away at the nation's vitals, while Americans are directed to panic about a few dozen guy in caves twelve thousand miles away?

The Truth about the Debt Crisis, in Very Nice Words...Someone Else's Words, Admittedly,

I am too disgusted with the Republican party, their rich masters and their tools in the "press" to come up with words to describe them any more, so I am just going to quote some excerpts from Hunter at Daily Kos, who says what every person with half a brain knows:

"Just a reminder on why we're even in this mess tonight: it's self-inflicted. Entirely. It's entirely political, entirely partisan, entirely hard-right ideological, and it doesn't have a damn thing to do with the "debt ceiling," or even the deficit, except as proxy for the one and only thing that does matter to Republicans: cutting social programs. Fixing the tax structure? Forget it. Deficits? Hell, Republicans have voted for deficits for a fine long time now. Didn't bother them. They even said it "didn't matter"—remember that one?
So why are we talking about "catastrophe" all of a sudden? Because they want to talk about it, and because they have found in the debt ceiling a fine hostage that the crazier among them aren't afraid to shoot.
  • We're at this point because of the Bush tax cuts. That's the one biggest contributor to the deficit, and it was the sole reason for the last of these hostage-taking sessions by Republicans. They demanded that we not let them expire. Didn't give a crap about the deficit then.
  • We're at this point because Republicans insist that the rich pay not one penny more in taxes, despite enjoying the lowest effective tax rates in modern U.S. history. Instead, Republicans demand cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. Straight-up class warfare, though, they will send for the fainting couch if you point that out.
  • We're at this point because no matter what proposal McConnell or another Republican comes forward with, within the same week they've walked away from the talks again, demanding still more, and insisting that their own proposal isn't enough.
  • We're at this point tonight because McConnell is currently filibustering a bill that, in large part, is his own damn right-wing proposal (see above). But he's not done taking hostages yet.
  • We're at this point because our own news media is too goddamn stupid to recognize when one side is doing something truly extremist in nature—never done before, and something both sides did without much bluster and insists that no, both parties must somehow be at fault.
I would make a terrible president, because if I were president right now I would kick McConnell out on his smug little ass, let the government shut down, and tell him to f---ing get back to me when he felt like being a damn American again."

There's lots more here if you feel like reading it. My apologies to Daily Kos and Hunter for stealing so much of his post, and I hope he would understand that it needs to be said, over and over again, until it starts sinking in.

Lawsuits Going Nowhere- a New Chapter in Idiotic Futility

Remember Bradlee Dean?  He is the "minister" friend of Michelle Bachmann who was invited by Republicans to deliver the invocation one day a few months ago to the Minnesota House of Representatives, and who had to nearly be dragged off the podium in the middle of a vicious attack not only on gays but also on Barack Obama.

Well, when Rachel Maddow reported on this sideshow, she quoted Mr. Dean as follows:

"Muslims are calling for the executions of homosexuals in America. This just shows you they themselves are upholding the laws that are even in the Bible of the Judeo-Christian God, but they seem to be more moral than even the American Christians do, because these people are livid about enforcing their laws. They know homosexuality is an abomination ... If America won't enforce the laws, God will raise up a foreign enemy to do just that."

Well, there you go.  Make of that statement what you want, but Mr. Dean has hooked up with Larry Klayman, the attorney whose 18 bogus lawsuits were central to the Republican attempt to impeach Bill Clinton.  They have now sued Rachel Maddow and MSNBC for $50 million dollars, not one penny of which they will ever see.

Klayman claims Maddow is "trying to destroy Bradlee Dean, trying to destroy Bachmann,"continuing that her comments were the "most outrageous statement I've heard in my entire life, and I've lived a bit here."

More outrageous, apparently, than Klayman's claim from a few years ago that Bill Clinton had committed several dozen murders.

Well, of course, the likes of Klayman can accuse Democrats of being Communist subversives, Muslim terrorists, murderers and non-citizens who have stolen the Presidency, but if Rachel Maddow  repeats Mr. Dean's actual words, and draws the obvious conclusion from them, it's time to whip out the lawsuits.

Don't go spending any of the proceeds from this "lawsuit," guys.  It ain't going anywhere, except into a couple of future episodes of Wingnut Wrapup.

And next time you want to file an idiotic suit like this, Bradlee, I'd suggest hiring Orly Taitz.  She's cheaper than Larry Klayman, and she can fix your teeth at the same time.

Boehner's "Failure"

Well, it is true that Boehner's Republican colleagues delivered him a massive humiliation yesterday.  Of course, it suits the entire mainstream "press" to present this as purely a personal failing of Boener's.  They are anxious to spread this myth, because, as usual, the truth is far worse.

In fact, the Republican party is now reaping the fruit of the madness that they have deliberately sown since Reagan- the notion that any taxation is too much, the insane idea that multinational corporations will look out for our welfare far better than our elected representatives, the idea that anyone who really understands a subject is automatically less qualified to deal with it than, say, some ignorant, incompetent right wing demagogue from Alaska.

Now, the Republican party and their lapdogs in the press have succeeded in breeding just enough of these stupid, greed-maddened people that they are able to prevent any rational resolution of our national problems (which, of course, were created by the same ludicrous cant that these people are still pushing as the solution to our problems.)

Boehner is a typical (now outmoded) ordinary Republican- corrupt beyond redemption, and willing to propound any theory, no matter how ridiculous, if it can be used to justify bending the law to the will of the rich.  Now, he is being swept away by a tidal wave of irrationality largely of his own creation.  But this is no more Boehner's fault than it is the fault of the generations of Republicans who have worked so hard to create this monster.  And any one of them, in Boehner's position, would be just as helpless to hold back this madness.  Any one of them would suffer the same fate as Boehner- to be crucified for not surrendering totally to the maelstrom of madness that has enveloped the Republican party, and which may very well crush our country as well.

Probably not an Improvement

From a review of the upcoming and massively anticipated RPG, Skyrim:

"Everything you see a character do, you can do as well, Howard explains, as he stands beside a lumber mill in the town of Riverwood, where a man is busily piling logs. These professions are part of a simulated economy, too. Sabotage the lumber mill and wooden items, like arrows, will become scarce. The degree to which the player will be able to plunge the province into financial crisis is yet undetermined, however."

Maybe they should consider letting your character become a Republican Congressman.

News of the (Sick) World

Mostly right here at home, of course.  We may not lead the world in much else anywhere, but we're still golden in self-destructive stupidity.

Well, thanks to the New York Times, we still have to listen to this.  Get ready to feel sick:

"Is the old John McCain back?

The fiery, independent version of the Republican senator from Arizona took to the floor of the Senate Wednesday morning. Demanding “straight talk,” Mr. McCain accused conservatives of abandoning reason by opposing the House Republican leader’s plan to resolve the debt crisis...on Wednesday morning, it looked like the maverick had returned."

God in heaven above, I thought that, with all that's going on in the country, we'd heard the last of this idiot.

And now, let's move on to the latest big news about the mighty Tea Party, which truly represents the majority of our country's citizens, and therefore fully justifies the endless free promotion it gets from the mainstream press:

"Tea party rally on Capitol Hill draws thin crowd

It had all the makings of a big time tea party rally: Presidential candidate Herman Cain, conservative Sens. Jim DeMint of South Carolina, Rand Paul of Kentucky and Mike Lee of Utah all showed up outside the Capitol Wednesday to urge members to “hold the line” against a deficit reduction compromise.  Reps. Louie Gohmert of Texas, Paul Broun of Georgia, and freshmen Joe Walsh of Illinois, also spoke.

The only thing missing? A big audience.

At the start of the rally, which was organized by the American Grassroots Coalition and Tea Party Express, there were roughly 15 attendees waiting to hear the conservative lawmakers speak. By the time the senators had spoken there were still fewer than 50 tea partiers in attendance."

As I've pointed out over and over again, the Tea Party is a synthetic, phony phenomenon in which just enough people are assembled to allow the press to deliberately misrepresent them as a mass movement, whose "populist" values just happen to coincide exactly with whatever large corporations want.  It used to take thousands. Now 50 people being addressed by many of their biggest luminaries is enough to justify coverage like this, from Fox News:

"We've got tea party activists who are getting together again-we haven't seen these kind of rallies in a while, but they are back out there in force"

"In force" being 50 people.  What a sham.

And where would our country be without Patrick Buchanan, who not too long ago was proclaiming Adolf Hitler as a "man of peace" who had World War II foisted on him, being assured that nothing he says, however contemptible, could endanger his God-given place as one of our senior pundits?  Now, he has this to say about the latest right wing mass murderer:

"As for a climactic conflict between a once-Christian West and an Islamic world that is growing in numbers and advancing inexorably into Europe for the third time in 14 centuries, on this one, Breivik may be right."

No one better, in Pat's mind, to hold up today as a paragon of advanced political thought.  Thanks for seeing to it MSNBC, that he has an opportunity to bless us with his views.

And now,  SHEEEE'S BACK!  Speaking of people that we (erroneously, of course) thought we'd seen the last of:

"D.C. Judge Rebukes Birther Lawyer for Filing Errors

U.S. District Chief Judge Royce Lamberth issued an order (PDF) yesterday scolding Orly Taitz, a lawyer and "birther" activist, for "wasting the Court's time" by failing to redact social security number information in court papers in violation of federal rules.

"Plaintiff is either toying with the Court or displaying her own stupidity. She made the correct redactions when she re-filed her Complaint and Amended Complaint," Lamberth wrote. "There is no logical explanation she can provide as to why she is now wasting the Court’s time, as well as the staff’s time, with these improper redactions."

The judge didn't dwell this time on how she is "wasting the court's time" by filing this federal lawsuit, alleging that Barack Obama has 37 Social Security numbers, in the first place.

And now, a little insight into the reasoning that is driving our country over a cliff at top speed- Republican reasoning, of course:

"A large number of conservative Republicans are opposing Boehner’s proposal, arguing it does not go far enough in reducing government spending.

But Boehner said he couldn’t understand why any Republicans would position themselves with Democrats opposing his plan.

“Barack Obama hates it, Harry Reid hates it, Nancy Pelosi hates it,” he said, naming off the Democratic leadership."

Great reasoning there, Orange One. I would like to suggest that you introduce a bill in Congress calling for the extermination of all children.  Obama, Reid and Pelosi would hate that too.

A Hidden Republican Punishment of the Middle Class

Here is another way that the middle class is being forced to bear the costs of the economic disaster foisted on us by the greed of the rich.  I have been surprised to never hear this spelled out directly, so finally I'm going to try to do it myself.

We constantly hear about people's responsibility to prepare for their own retirement.  In fact, a large part of Republican cant involve the constant claim that we should bear far more of that burden.  Let's consider what is happening to people who spent their lives following this advice:

Imagine a working class couple who, responsibly, saved carefully for their retirement, and over their working lives managed to save $500,000.

Before the Bush economic disaster, that money might have earned, say, 5% interest, or $25,000 a year.  That would be enough to more than double the money they get from Social Security, and if they don't have a mortgage, it would be a substantial contribution to their living an independent and relatively comfortable life.

Today, they are going to make 1% on their life savings, or about $5000 a year.  This is an almost insignificant contribution to their survival, but something else is going on here.  The difference between these two figures, $20,000 per year, represents an effective tax on these people, to pay for the economic damage done by the rich, who have largely been absolved from absorbing any of its costs.

Let's say that they get $20,000 a year from Social Security, and let's just say one of them is lucky enough to have a pension paying a further $20,000.  With the $25,000 they should have been able to earn from their savings, this would have given them an annual income of $65,000;  enough, if they had a paid-off mortgage, to live relatively comfortably.  The $20,000 they are losing because of the economic crisis represents an effective 31% income tax, on top of any other taxes they may owe.  Consider that the next time you hear that hedge fund managers pay only 15% tax on the billions they make.

Our whole economy has turned into one gigantic swindle, but little of it is as galling as this way the rich have found to penalize people for having led honest and productive lives.  This is America today, and it is why we are headed for oblivion.

The New York Times Gets It Partly Right

When it published this comment today:

"House Republicans have lost sight of the country’s welfare. It’s hard to conclude anything else from their latest actions, including the House speaker’s dismissal of President Obama’s plea for compromise Monday night. They have largely succeeded in their campaign to ransom America’s economy for the biggest spending cuts in a generation. They have warped an exercise in paying off current debt into an argument about future spending. Yet, when they win another concession, they walk away.

This increasingly reckless game has pushed the nation to the brink of ruinous default. The Republicans have dimmed the futures of millions of jobless Americans, whose hopes for work grow more out of reach as government job programs are cut and interest rates begin to rise. They have made the federal government a laughingstock around the globe.  "

True, except for the part about the Republicans having lost sight of the country's welfare.  They know perfectly well what they are doing, and what its consequences will be.  They just don't care, because it stands in the way of their seizure of power, just four years after they used that power to nearly destroy the country.  Now they are willing to complete the job if it gets them what they want.

We are at the point where we must recognize that the Republican party is a traitorous, corrupt cabal, bought and paid for by the hyper-rich, which is deliberately trying to crush everyone who doesn't pay them to "govern."  The Democrats, other than in their pathetic weakness, played virtually no part in creating the disaster we are living through.   We must face this reality or their 100 year long campaign to destroy the United States as we know it will succeed.

Wingnut Wrapup- Norway Edition

Well, you know that it wouldn't take long for the right, incapable as it is of accepting responsibility for anything, to start trying to lie away their close connection to the likes of  Anders Behring Breivik, the Norwegian Conservative fundamentalist Christian who murdered a hundred or so people recently.

This is a painful post to write, very long and without a lot of the humor that makes it somewhat tolerable to stay aware of the evil that has taken over the American right.   I actually don't expect very many people to make it through this tripe, but I felt a need to get it down on the record.  So, read as much of it as you please- I know it isn't a pleasant task.

Long time readers of Wingnut Wrapup will know that I exiled Pam Geller because her ugly, racist ranting was so sickening that there was no humor to be gotten from it.  However, Pammy has closely associated herself with the type of Scandinavian Muslim haters that this guy represents:

"Killings in Norway Spotlight Anti-Muslim Thought in U.S...The man accused of the killing spree in Norway was deeply influenced by a small group of American bloggers and writers who have warned for years about the threat from Islam, lacing his 1,500-page manifesto with quotations from them...

Mr. Breivik frequently cited another blog, Atlas Shrugs...Pamela Geller, an outspoken critic of Islam who runs Atlas Shrugs, wrote on her blog Sunday that any assertion that she or other antijihad writers bore any responsibility for Mr. Breivik’s actions was “ridiculous.”

So, I thought it would be worthwhile to watch her dig herself out of the very filthy hole she carefully constructed for herself.

Here's Pammy before she had any facts (her natural habitat, it must be admitted:)

"More media lies and obfuscation. Just because the media doesn't cover these news stories doesn't mean they haven't happened. You can ignore jihad, but you cannot avoid the consquences of ignoring jihad.

Jihad in Norway? Oslo Bombed, Dead, Injured at Government HQ UPDATE: Multiple Attacks, Blasts and Gun Attacks, 16 Dead, Hundreds Hurt...But remember, jihad is not the problem. "Islamophobia" is the problem. Repeat after me as you bury the dead, "Islamophobia is the probem, Islamophobia is the problem."

Well, as things turned out, Islamophobia was the problem, huh, Pammy?

So, let's move on to what she had to say after the guy was identified:

"Murderer's manifesto imagined cautious alliance with Jihadists: “We both share one common goal”

See- even though he was acting out of hatred of Muslims, and shared Pam's views on the subject completely, he was still actually allied with Jihadists.  Pam continues her spittle flecked* tirade:

"The parsing of the writings and conversations of the Norway shooter begins. He is a murderer, a mass murderer. Period. He's not anything else.  And if he's a right winger who hates Muslims, how does that translate into killing a bunch of political youth party Workers’ Youth League. He could easily have found Muslim children to kill if that had been his intention."

But Pammy herself has claimed on many occasions that there is no difference between liberals and Islamic terrorists.  And we know this guy read Pammy's blog and approved of it.

"There was no "ideology" here. No mandate for murder, and all the leftists, Islamic apologists and Islamic supremacists and media hounds won't make it so. Watching CNN and BBC coverage about Norway, I found very disturbing to hear the number of times they use the word "Christian." They would never dare refer to religion when it is jihad, and this attack had nothing to do with Christianity. It is outrageous."

No, they would never refer to Islam when there is an act of Jihad, no!  They would never do that.  In fact, the vast majority of Americans aren't even aware that the 9-11 terrorists were Muslims, because the press never reported that detail.  I mean, am I right or what?   And just because he consistently referred to himself as a fundamentalist Christian, well, that means nothing...Nothing, I tell you!

"Who Added "Christian" and "Conservative" to Norway Shooter's Facebook Page Yesterday?  While the leftist and Islamic supremacist ghouls rush to portray Norway mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik as a Christian and even as an anti-jihadist, the unanswered questions multiply."

Well, at least that question can be answered, Pammy.  He added "Christian" and "Conservative to his own facebook page all by himself, because he is one.  Chew on that for a while, while we move on to some more outstanding Conservative commentary on this issue:

Erick Erickson, via Twitter:  "Terrorist bombing in Oslo. I bet you it was not Lutherans who did it."

You lose, Erick.  It was a Lutheran.   Send my winnings to the Murfreesboro, Tennessee Mosque building fund, please.

Repair Man Jack, Red State:  "The Opposite of Pro-Life Is What Just Happened In Norway...We live in a world where we are perfectly happy to abort millions of children and then DEMAND to know WHY Anders Behring Breivik became the human sarcoma that he truly is...He did exactly what are euthanasianists, our abortionists, our health care rationers and our zero-population growth fanatics preach...The only difference between he and they was that he was a loud, ignorant klutz who forgot to go ask the government “Mother, may I?”

Yes, you read that correctly.  It is entirely the fault of abortion and national health care that this person did what he did.  Not a word about the fifteen hundred page manifesto he wrote explaining exactly how his actions were motivated by his Conservatism and his fundamentalist Christianity.  No, it's all the liberals' fault.

Andrew Breitbart, Big Peace:  "This Norwegian terrorist was not a Christian or a conservative.  He was instead a jihadist,  blinded by an ideology who resorted to violence rather than engaging in a public debate of ideas.  "

Ahh, I see.  He was a Jihadist, even though he wasn't, and he wasn't a fundamentalist Christian, even though he was.  Now, there is Conservative thinking at its finest.

Confederate Yankee:  "Terror in Oslo: Religion of Pedophilia and Infantile Rage Strikes Again...We can't outlaw a peaceful religion, but we sure as Hell can outlaw violent cults.  It's time we started working on making that happen."

Right on, O Yankee.  It's time we outlaw the religion of the Norwegian attacker! Finally, you're speaking sense!  Oops, wait, there's more:

"Update: Norwegian national broadcaster NRK identified the shooter as 32-year-old Anders Behring Breivik, and he is apparently an anti-Muslim right-wing extremist and Christian Fundamentalist. He is Norway's McVeigh."

Forget that outlawing the religion thing.  Mr. Yankee never said that...

"The key difference to remember--while American liberals gloat over the wrong assumptions we made based upon initial claims--is that when so-called Christians embark on crimes of this nature, they are expressly violating one of the key tenants of our faith. When Muslims commit mass murder, they are typically following key tenants of their faith."

So, even though this guy turned out to be a right wing, gun loving Conservative Christian like Confederate Yankee, our appropriate response is still to take it out on Muslims.  Well, what else would you expect?

Bruce Bawer, Pajamas Media:  "A Double Tragedy for Norway...Not only has it lost almost one hundred people to a senseless rampage, but legitimate criticism of Islam has been profoundly discredited by association with a murderous lunatic."

Yes, and there's the real shame.  It will be days before people like Bruce are able to scream their hatred in public.  Except, of course, that it didn't seem to slow Bruce down for more than fifteen minutes, if that.  In fact, this abomination just provided Bruce with an extra opportunity to attack Muslims.  Bruce has lots more to say, don't you worry:

"When I first heard the news of the explosions at those buildings, my first thought, of course, was that it was a jihadist attack. But it wasn’t: it was a right-wing lunatic. It wasn’t jihad. It was a meaningless killing spree by a madman"

You see, when a person openly and proudly declares that he was motivated by fundamentalist Christianity and Conservative ideology, he's still nothing but a lone madman.  If he were Islamic on the other hand, he would provide a perfect argument for the extermination of a billion people.

"Right-wing fundamentalist Christian. It’s a slam-dunk for the liberal-left; the ultimate caricature of conservative extremism; the bogeyman that had until now existed largely in their imaginations made real."

Because, of course, never in history had that "bogeyman" really appeared:

James Lewis, Pajamas Media: "The Left will manage to blame the usual scapegoats, the way it always does. In fact, it is the Left itself that has opened Pandora's Box by systematically destroying the pillars of Western civilization, even bringing in Muslim terror preachers to speed up the destruction of civilized life."

Yes indeed, even though this guy is a classic, party line right winger, his actions are all the left's fault.  But James isn't content to let the issue drop without taking the opportunity to let another right wing character off the hook:

"Napoleon killed so many Germans and Russians that he ignited a national revenge dynamic between Germany and France, triggering the Franco-Prussian War, World War I, and then the Second World War. "

See, what happened in the Second World War wasn't Hitler's fault at all.  It was the fault of some guy who was French, and therefore undoubtedly liberal.

Well, let's finish off this disgraceful display with a prime example of all-caps journalism from the masters of that literary genre, the Astute Bloggers:

"LEFTISTS ARE GLEEFUL AFTER A NORWEGIAN NEO-NAZI IS ARRESTED FOR THE MONSTROUS OSLO TERROR ATTACK

THE LEFT IS SICK - THEY ARE ACTUALLY HAPPY THAT THE TERRORIST IS NOT A JIHADIST.

No examples given of this left wing happiness, of course.  But, of course, the left is always thrilled when some right wing asshole kills a hundred or so liberal kids.  That's just the kind of people we are, I guess.

"IT SEEMS BREIVIK WASN'T RIGHT-WING AT ALL -BREIVIK WAS A NEO-NAZI, AND (CONTRARY TO WHAT WE WERE ALL TUAGHT) NAZISM IS ACTUALLY LEFT-WING."

The Astute Ones are certainly not going to waste a perfect opportunity to trot this malignant lie out, now, are they?

"ANYONE WHO TRIES TO TIE THIS BLOG OR MY VIEWS TO THIS HORRIFIC ACT IN OSLO OR THIS PSYCHOTIC MASS MURDERER BREIVIK IS SCUM"

Scum telling the truth, of course.  And the Astute ones know it damned well, or they wouldn't be preemptively whining about it.

"I THINK MAYBE THERE'S A POSSIBILITY THAT THIS ANDERS BREIVIK IS ACTUALLY A PSYCHOTIC LEFTIST WHO DID THIS HORRIFYING ACT TO DISCREDIT THE RIGHT."

Yeah, except for his years of  history as a right winger and fundamentalist Christian.

"WHY DIDN'T ANYBODY SEE THIS ATTACK IN OSLO COMING? COULD IT BE THAT OBAMA'S POLICIES HAVE MADE US ALL MORE VULNERABLE? YES."

Oh, I see...It's all Obama's fault.  Tell me you didn't see that one coming.

"THE OSLO ATTACK WAS PREDICTABLE - IN FACT, WE POSTED ON THE ISLAMIZATION OF OSLO YESTERDAY...

THERE WERE WARNINGS - FROM FOLKS LIKE US WHO ARE OFTEN CALLED ISLAMOPHOBES"

And also often called disgusting assholes.  Of course, what you neglected to foresee was that a hundred kids would be murdered by someone who  is just like you.  Maybe that's what you should have warned us about.

Well, that's a sample of the first 24 hours or so of response to this incident from the right, and it has sickened me more than usual to put it down on paper.  Unfortunately, if they are allowed to carry out this sort of historical revisionism without a record of it somewhere, we will soon be living in a world where this sort of right wing violence becomes a common occurrence, like in Germany in 1928 or 1929.  We've already travelled farther down that road than I would have thought possible in such a short time.  I hope you can forgive me for taking you along on this very sickening visit into the minds of some very evil people.

*Yes indeed, Pam Geller can actually get her word processor to fling spittle.  This unusual feat will perhaps eventually earn her the employment she deserves- in a circus sideshow, next to the guy who bites the heads off of chickens.

What Movie Could This Be From, I Wonder...

A little view into the box office numbers for this weekend:

And just what blockbuster movie is on a pace to make $23,000 its second weekend?  Can you guess?  Because I'm not even going to give you a hint.

Except this one:  I have been documenting, as long as I have had this blog, that the Tea Party is a manufactured illusion.  Here is just a little more proof.  No one wants to see this movie. I hope the moron who paid for it is pleased with the money he wasted.

Wingnut Wrapup

Let's just start out with a little Glenn Beck:

"Beck is promising that (his upcoming Jerusalem) rally will be a "life-changing, life-altering event" that could "change the direction of the world" and open up "the very gates of Heaven."

Glenn Beck is going to open up the gates of heaven...Don't put too much money on that one, Glenn.  You know you just lost your main job- not a time to be gambling.

And now on to Jim Hoft, who wins the trifecta today, as only he can do, since we retired Pammy Geller:

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "NBC Host Ann Curry Asks Commie Dalai Lama to Advise Obama on ‘Fierce Struggle’ With Republicans ...Her question should have been, “Your commie Holiness, how do you deal with a big talker with no plan?”

"Commie" Dalai Lama.  Isn't that sort of like calling Churchill a Nazi?  Isn't that sort of like calling Michelle Bachmann a brain-dead lunatic?  Oh, wait...Michelle Obama is a brain-dead lunatic.  Why do you think she leaked the migraine thing- she wants to fool us into thinking she has a brain.

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "Terrific!… FOX News Now Includes Commie Panelists On Saturday Morning Business Shows "

Back to those pesky Commies.  And this time on Fox News!  They're everywhere!  Jim, I hate to break this to you, but the last time anyone took seriously someone using the word "commie" was in 1958.

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "The Sarah Palin documentary “The Undefeated” had a huge opening day. They sold out from Atlanta to Orange County.  Victory Film Group announced “The Undefeated” will roll out to additional AMC theatres this week."

"Huge" equaling $70,000.  That puts it down there vying with The Pickle for the lowest grossing movie of all time.  Well, at least Jim is telling the truth about The Undefeated rolling out to additional AMC theatres this week- four of them, in addition to the ten already showing it.  By my calculation, that will get it up to Harry Potter's 4,375 screens right around the first week of July, 2032.  Feel that momentum building!

Erick Erickson, Red State:  "In fact, the Palin film is dazzling people by just how well a film of its type is doing"

How well it's doing?  What, the fact that anyone allowed themselves to be suckered out of $10.00 to be force fed two hours of propaganda about the most asinine political figure in decades?  Well, Erick, you may have a point there.  Ten people watching this movie in a church basement is pretty amazing when you think about it.

Town Hall:  "Bogus CBS Poll Parrots Democrat Party Line... Deeply Flawed CBS Poll Says 71 Percent of Voters Disapprove of GOP's Handling of Debt Negotiations "

"Deeply flawed" meaning not agreeing with Sarah Palin.

Bob Owens, Confederate Yankee:  ""Watergate with a Body Count" Continues to Fall Apart For the Obama Administration...I have two Gunwalker articles posted at Pajamas Media at the moment, and two more in the wings."

Bob had 11 posts today at his own blog, as well as five at other sites.  Despite Bob's heroic effort, the only sense in which this "scandal" is falling apart is that it can't get attention from anyone who is not certifiably insane.  Still, Bob, "A" for effort.  I haven't seen this kind of dedication since Joseph Farah first got upset about Obama's birth certificate.

World Net Daily:  "DOT road sign flashes: 'Impeach Obama'

Someone hacked into a highway construction sign, and World Net Daily (as well as a number of other right wing sites I follow) thinks it's an event worthy of national news.  Not much to crow about these days, huh, fellows?  Well, look on the bright side.  Maybe a few dozen more people will go to see the Sarah Palin movie this weekend, so you will have the material for another hundred or so posts.

James Lewis, American Thinker:  "Sarah Palin's Grace Under Pressure"

The pressure of earning $12 million a year selling out your country?  Don't try to kid me.  That would stress out a lot of people, but not Sarah.  She's built of tougher stuff that that.  Particularly when a little thing like a conscience is all that  stands between her and a buck.

Astute Bloggers:  "Two-thirds of Obama campaign cash from small donors, huh? Yeah, I believe that"

O Astute Ones, you would be very surprised, I expect, at how little we care what you believe, given your .000 batting average in that regard.  Still, you have been good for Green Eagle, so keep at it, please.

Big Government:  "Blocking oil companies’ ability to benefit from two key tax relief provisions could drive up the deficit and the national debt, according to a study released Tuesday by Louisiana State University professor Dr. Jospeh R. Mason"

Well, that's really interesting.  You know what suckers we liberals are for studies released by professors, even ones from Louisiana.  Let's read further and see what else we can learn:

"The study, sponsored by the American Energy Alliance......"

Wait just a minute...the American Energy Alliance.  I'm sure they are a progressive organization, dedicated to our welfare, right?  Let's check out who they are, so we can truly appreciate their wisdom:

"The American Energy Alliance (AEA) was founded in 2008 by Thomas Pyle, who previously lobbied on behalf of the National Petrochemical and Refiners Association and Koch Industries and who previously worked for Congressman Tom Delay (R-TX), when Delay served as Whip and before Delay, as House Majority Leader, stepped down from the U.S. House of Representatives under an ethical cloud.

AEA's allied organization, the Institute for Energy Research, is also led by Thomas Pyle.[5] IER received $95,000 from ExxonMobil in 2007 and $65,000 the year before, but the organization has said that ExxonMobil is no longer a funder.  IER has also received donations from the Brown Foundation, which was started by the founders of the construction and energy company Brown & Root  (That would be Halliburton, in case you have forgotten- GE;) the Searle Freedom Trust, funded by the late conservative philanthropist Daniel Searle; and the Claude R. Lambe Charitable Foundation, which is run by executives of Koch Industries, a major company in the petroleum refining industry and one of the main funders of Americans for Prosperity. According to NPR, Wayne Gable, who lobbied for Koch Industries along with Pyle, is on the board of both IER and AEA.[8] IER has been active in questioning global warming, suggesting that Al Gore and others are "climate alarmists," and acting as a climate skeptic while defending climate deniers...The New Mexico Independent noted that "Information on the group is hard to come by. There are no online Federal Energy Regulatory Commission filings, no Internal Revenue Service filings and no way to contact the group."

Well, that certainly reassured me about this organization's trustworthiness.  Who could know more about whether oil companies should have to pay taxes?

Big Government:  "The Left's Assault on Investment Will Bring Down Our Economy"

Too late.  The right's assault on our economy under Bush already brought down our economy.

Cold Fury:  "It’s NOT the religion, stupid-Republican Presidential candidate Herman Cain is being accused by the Center on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) of ‘bigotry’ after stating that American communities had the right to ban mosques."

Of COURSE it's not the religion.  Everybody knows that Herman Cain only wants to ban mosques because they are infected with bedbugs.   Why, Herman Cain is a Republican.  How could you ever think he would consciously exploit people's bigotry?

Well, it's been a long time since we checked in with our friend Henry Makow, who has enlightened us so much in the past:

Henry Makow:  "What if Barack Obama is the most successful suicide bomber of them all,  a political suicide bomber?  A man who reached the highest office in the world for the sole purpose of ensuring our demise as a nation."

Yeah...what if?  What if Barack Obama is really a pirate like that Jack Sparrow guy?  What if he reached the highest office in the world for the sole purpose of stealing our gold doubloons?

And while our minds are on Henry, let's pay a visit to our number one expert on guillotines:

Pam Schuffert, American Holocaust:  "I recently met with a Christian trucker at a local Christian church near Kalispell, MT. This person overheard my discussion in that church a few Sundays ago about coming martial law and preparations being made in MONTANA.

He took me aside and told me the following: "The truckers are all abuzz in BILLINGS, MONTANA. Truckloads of the MODERN MILITARY GUILLOTINES are being shipped BY TRUCK into BILLINGS now..."

And don't forget, these are MODERN military guillotines!  Not the old kind.  You can operate these ones with your I-phone.

Hassan Nurullah, Renew America:  "We told you so!"

And so you did.  Luckily, like everything you guys tell us, it wasn't so.  We dodged another bullet, I guess- an imaginary bullet.  And by the way, just in case you were wondering, Renew America informs us:

"(Hassan's) views are conservative and strongly influenced by an unapologetic Christian world view."

Wouldn't want anyone to worry that Renew America was filling us up with crackpot Muslim nonsense, would we?

Well, enough crackpot nonsense for one day, huh?  'Bye.

Get Ready to Be Depressed

Psychologically and economically:  The following is being reported this afternoon:

"A Congressional aide briefed on ongoing negotiations between House Speaker John Boehner and President Obama says the two principals may be nearing a "grand bargain" on to raise the debt limit which would contain large, set-in-stone spending cuts but only the possibility of future revenue increases.

"All cuts," the aide said. "Maybe revenues some time in the future."

Yes, just as we feared, it appears that Obama may be about to strike a "grand bargain" in which Republicans get everything and he (and we also) get screwed.

Can there be a single person on earth both stupid and ignorant enough to think that the "future" in which Republicans will agree to additional revenues will ever come?  Obama knows damned well that he is giving away our future, and getting nothing in return.   At this point, I cannot think of a single rationale for taking this "deal."

Mr. Obama, that is not a bargain- it is a betrayal.

Table Scraps

I want to quote a very perceptive comment from Americablog:

"But right now Progressives are the Table Scraps Wing of the NeoLiberal Party, and a little conflicted about staying there. Or, as Sam Seder noted on his Majority Report program today (paraphrasing): It's odd how the Obama administration starts showing up on one of the progressive social issues, just when it's screwing them on an economic one. "

This leads me to something that I have been thinking about, but am almost afraid to say out loud:  Gay marriage is our abortion.  There's a difference, of course- I support gay marriage, and don't support bans on abortion.  What I mean is that, like the recent flurry of State laws aimed at stopping abortion, gay marriage is the bone that our "leaders" throw us to get us to forgive them for not dealing honestly with the real issues facing all of us. Obama is selling down the river everything it is supposed to mean to be a Democrat, and thereby helping the Republicans cause a new depression, but it's all okay, because he is going to let gay people get married.  That's the idea, anyway.

Well, it's not okay with me.  I want to live in a country with the standard of living provided by other rich industrialized countries, not in a newly-created third world hellhole.  That is the real choice facing this country, and pandering to the base with marginal social issues is going to do no more to solve that problem than teaching creationism or preaching about meaningless "family values."

Too Blunt To Be a Politician

Via Americablog.  I'm not sure who this guy is, but I like his attitude.  Maybe we should elect him to something:

Nah, he's too liberal.  No one would ever vote for him.  He couldn't get anything done, because he won't compromise with Repubicans.  Best to stick with Obama.

The Plot Thickens- A Lot

From the Guardian:

"News of the World phone-hacking whistleblower found dead

Death of Sean Hoare – who was first named journalist to allege Andy Coulson knew of hacking – not being treated as suspicious..."

Not being treated as suspicious by whom?  Scotland Yard?  Oh, that's a big surprise.

Now I'm getting interested in this story.  This is just what it needed to really take off- a suspicious death.  It's finally starting to sound like an episode of Law and Order.

Defeated

The Hollywood Reporter tells us:  "Sarah Palin Documentary 'The Undefeated' Claims Victory in its Box Office Debut"

Well, let's see:

Domestic grosses for this weekend:Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2:  $168,550,000
Undefeated:  $70,000

Victory?  We report, you decide.

Another One Falls In England

The deputy mayor of London has just announced his resignation.  It is claimed at this point that this has nothing to do with Rupert Murdoch.  We'll see.  At this point, I'm beginning to expect that the entire English government is on the Murdoch payroll, one way or the other.  We're so much better off in this country- only one of our political parties is owned by Murdoch.

No Fury Like a Lover Scorned

From the New York Times:

"LONDON — The British police on Sunday arrested Rebekah Brooks, the former head of Rupert Murdoch’s media operations in Britain, according to a former associate at News International, the newspaper group at the heart of a phone-hacking scandal convulsing the Murdoch empire, the British political elite and the police. "

She must have missed her latest bribe payment.

Wingnut Wrapup

I thought I might start out with a little coverage of the right wing reaction to yesterday's White House meeting with Republicans over the budget:

Ann Coulter, Town Hall:  "McConnell's deal cleanly takes the debt ceiling issue off the Republicans' back and puts it on the president's back. Either the Democrats tell us what they'll cut or they'll have to admit: "We will never cut anything. Everything Ann Coulter says about us is true!"

You mean, like when she called Democrats traitors and Communists who should be violently destroyed?

Ben Howe, Red State:  "More Union Workers Smoking Pot on the Job...Meanwhile, President Obama would rather storm out of a meeting than cut spending that enables behavior like this."

I see. It's government spending that causes people to smoke pot.  Who knew?

Erick Erickson, Red State:  "Playing the role of Hollywood President, not the real President, the President said he didn’t care if this brought down his Presidency and he would not yield."

I have to sort of agree with Erick here.  As far as I can tell, only in Hollywood do Democrats actually stand up for what they believe in.

Astute Bloggers:  "Somebody please tell Obama that politics is the art of the possible...... and that you don't make deals by storming out of meetings like an inexperienced petulant little spoiled leftist brat."

Well, you don't make deals by letting corrupt Republicans have what they want either.  I'll take the storming out.  Of course, being a right wing claim it never happened, but it would have been nice if he had finally had enough and told them to sod off.  I guess that only happens in Hollywood too.

Streiff, Red State:  "This isn’t a surprise to anyone who has been playing attention to our child president over the past three years. The Obama administration has been a veritable Mecca for narcissism and incompetence from the time Obama took the oath of office."

Except this time, Streiff.  Oh yeah, and then there was that Osama thing.

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "Thanks Barack… Moody’s Threatens to Drop Aaa Bond Rating For First Time Since 1917"

Well, everything else is his fault.  I guess deliberate Republican attempts to sabotage the economy in order to get rid of him are his fault too.

Well, that's enough of that.    Too much, really.  Now, on to the ordinary maunderings of the right:

Mike Adams, Town Hall:  "A Queer and Present Danger"

Believe me, you don't even want to know what this one is about.

David Swindle, Pajamas Media:  "Mila Kunis on Casual Sex: 'It's like communism—good in theory, in execution it fails'

Boy, you must be doing it wrong, Mila.  I'm not dating you.

Erik Rush, World Net Daily:  "Slavery is generally justified for largely economic reasons, but it does play to the baser nature of the slaver: the ability to hold sway over another."

NOW I see.  Slavery is actually a really good thing for the economy, but we shouldn't have it because it has such a destructive psychological effect on the slave owners.  After all, there are things that are more important than the economy, right?  Like the sad fate of these poor white people.    Eric humorously continues:

Our president employs real, live communist czars and Cabinet members."

And finally, he leaves us with this sage observation:

"but no one seems to care about being outed as a liar anymore."

Well, Eric, at least you don't.  Sheesh, how idiotic do you think people are?

World Net Daily Breaking News:  "Today! Farah sits in for vacationing G. Gordon Liddy"

Oh boy, that should be a treat.

And now here's another nominee for The Scandal that Won't Go Anywhere:

World Net Daily:  "Atheist depicts whole Bible in Lego blocks: Ministry, parody or blasphemy?"

Personally, I think it's way too much free time.

John T. Bennett, American Thinker:  "Racial Violence and the Conspicuous Silence of the Media..A wave of racial violence the media resolutely refuses to report fully."

They refuse to report it...and for no other reason than that it doesn't exist.  That's certainly not how they write the news on the right side of the political spectrum.

Lloyd Marcus, American Thinker:  "The Black Code: Why Obama Still Owns The Black Vote"

Maybe because they aren't as stupid as white people?  That's my guess.

Tom Suhadolnik, American Thinker:  "How to fix the budget in 72 hours"

Throw all the Republican congressmen in prison?

Jerry Shenk, American Thinker:  "Are Conservatives Being Fair to Barack Obama? "

Oh, of course they are.  He really is an anti-American Communist Muslim Satanist who was born in Kenya and isn't really the President.  Everyone knows that.

Astute Bloggers:  "MORE ANTISEMITISM FROM OBAMA AND THE DEMOCRATS: THEY BLAME ERIC CANTOR"

So that's the explanation-  I should have thought of it before.  It's not that Cantor is a corrupt corporate tool who is deliberately trying to sabotage the economy so Obama will lose in 2012.  No, that has nothing to do with it.  It's because he's Jewish.  That makes so much sense.

And here's the award for adult political discourse of the day:

Astute Bloggers:  "OBAMA: "LE TWAT C'EST MOI"

No comment needed.

And now, The Major Threat To Democracy of the Day:

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "Documents Show Obama Staffer Threatened to Stuff Dead Fish in FOX News Cubby"

Oh my God, how will the nation ever survive?  We need a special prosecutor RIGHT NOW!

Rick Moran, American Thinker:  "Bachmann haul for 2nd quarter: $4 million- The Big Mo"

Obama totals for 2nd quarter:  $86 million.  Means nothing, of course. It probably all came from George Soros.  Republicans never take money from rich people.

And, to finish off for today, a wise word of Constitutional scholarship for us all to ponder:

Renew America:  "Miss America: Obama shirking the Constitution...Scanlan scored Obama poorly for his faithfulness to the Constitution, saying that “there are definitely issues there that he’s not paying attention [to] like he should,” and suggested “ignorance” might be to blame since constitutional law is no longer stressed in school curriculums."

"Constitutional law is no longer stressed in school curriculums."  I wonder if that includes Harvard Law School.  Well, I'm sure Teresa is fully qualified to address that subject. After all, Teresa Scanlan did teach constitutional law at one of America's most prestigious universities.  Oh wait, that's not quite right:

"Scanlan was home-schooled until her junior year of high school, before attending Gering High School part-time for half of her junior year...In her spare time, Teresa enjoys singing, acting, dancing, playing piano and guitar, composing songs, baking, participating in activities with her local church, and making clothes out of duct tape, among many other hobbies."

Whoops, my bad.  It was Obama who was on the Harvard Law Review and taught constitutional law.  Teresa Scanlan is an eighteen year old who was home schooled  (where, perhaps, she learned constitutional law by attending a brilliant series of lectures by her mother,) and who makes clothes out of duct tape.  To the right wing, that makes her far more qualified than Barack Obama to decide what the Constitution means.  I wish I was just being sarcastic when I said that.

Enough already.  More than enough, really.

Good Advice

"MANILA, Philippines (AP) — The Philippines warned Friday against using geckos to treat AIDS and impotence"

A very wise thing to avoid.  So few geckos have really completed medical school.

I Bet This Economic News Will Totally Surprise You

From Think Progress:

"JP Morgan Investor Report: Huge Corporate Profits Resulted Directly From Reducing Wages And Benefits

As ThinkProgress previously reported, since 2009, 88 percent of income growth has gone to corporate profits, and only 1 percent has gone to wages. Now, a July 11 edition of Eyes On The Market, a JP Morgan investor report, finds that S&P 500 corporate profit margins increased by about 1.3 percent from 2000 to 2007, with profit margins reaching levels “not seen in decades.”

The JP Morgan analysis concludes that “reductions in wages and benefits explain the majority of the net improvement in margins.

US labor compensation is now at a 50-year low relative to both company sales and US GDP.”

That is how corporations are reaching record profits- not by making better products, or by marketing them more effectively.  No, their obscene profits during this time of economic stress result almost entirely from crushing their workers, with the ever present threat that if workers don't collapse in the face of the onslaught, their jobs will all be moved to China.

I want to state once again what should be utterly obvious to everyone by now (this means you, Barack:)  The super rich and their tools in the Republican party are engaged in a conscious, deliberate campaign to turn the United States from the leading industrialized nation on earth into a miserable third world country with no middle class and a working class so close to starvation that it is incapable of opposing its effective slavery.  And they seem to be easily succeeding.

So Sad

This:

"Sarah Palin Movie Debuts to Empty Theater in Orange County

"Why aren't you seeing Harry Potter?" an usher said to the reporter sitting alone in the audience"

Update:  And while we're on the subject, this just in:

"Organizers of the Freedom Jamboree announced Wednesday that they have canceled the tea party convention planned for this fall, citing low registration.

They had hoped the event would serve as a stage for Republican presidential candidates to court the conservative movement, and two — Rep. Michelle Bachmann (Minn.) and former Sen. Rick Santorum (Pa.) — had already confirmed they would attend."

And the "liberal media" has spent three years now, mesmerized by this synthetic phenomenon, while ignoring the country as it goes to hell on the fast road.

Krugman, Right As Usual

And as usual, almost alone among those with a real voice in stating the obvious truth:

"A number of commentators seem shocked at how unreasonable Republicans are being. “Has the G.O.P. gone insane?” they ask.

Why, yes, it has. But this isn’t something that just happened, it’s the culmination of a process that has been going on for decades. Anyone surprised by the extremism and irresponsibility now on display either hasn’t been paying attention, or has been deliberately turning a blind eye.

Mr. Bush squandered the surplus of the late Clinton years, yet prominent pundits pretend that the two parties share equal blame for our debt problems...So there has been no pressure on the G.O.P. to show any kind of responsibility, or even rationality — and sure enough, it has gone off the deep end. If you’re surprised, that means that you were part of the problem. "

The Republican party has spent three decades descending into lunacy, and what's worse, a deliberate lunacy in the service of corruption.  Meanwhile, the people who are allowed to speak to the nation have taken it as their preeminent mission to deny this reality in any way they can, so the Republican plundering of the nation can continue until there is nothing left to steal.  This combination of a treasonous political party and a bought-and-paid-for press (also arranged for by the Republican saint Ronald Reagan, through doing away with the rules against media conglomeration) is destroying the country.  Many people, myself included, have been aware of this since the eighties at least, but it still suits the purpose of our overlords to hire as many people as they can find who are willing to deny the fact and grease the skids to oblivion, in return for a nice salary.

You can be sure that the 2012 election will be fought over a collection of bogus Republican "facts" and issues, which will help guarantee that nothing whatsoever is done to deal with the real crisis facing this country, as that would inevitably involve identifying the real villains- the very people who finance the Republican party's descent into self-serving "lunacy."

What Happened to Sarah's Jury Duty

Remember Sarah Palin quitting her egomaniacal, self-promoting bus tour of America a few weeks ago, and then claiming that she had to go back to Alaska for jury duty?  Of course, the press was far too busy with Casey Anthony etc. to follow up on the latest disappearing act by the Quitta from Wasilla.  So, I thought I would see what vital trial she served on.  Here is a story about Sarah's alleged jury duty, in case you care.

The long and short of it?  The State of Alaska does not release the names of jurors, but there is certainly no evidence that she was ever called for jury duty, which in any event would have run out at the end of June, half a month ago.  No sign that she is resuming her bus tour.

I don't know about Alaska, but jurors in California get months of notice of when they are called to serve.  How is it that Sarah Palin didn't hear about her jury duty until she was in the middle of her bus tour?

This woman has as much respect for the truth as I do for the Dodgers this year.  Why does anyone even pretend that she would be truthful about this?

It's That Time Again

Crack a bottle of Echezeaux and kick back.

A Little Perspective on the Debt Ceiling

Here is a chart of the history of the debt ceiling which I think shows a lot.  Sorry, it's a little low resolution, but I'm sure you will get the idea:

I've added the blue blocks showing the Presidencies of Reagan and the two Bushes.  Reading off the graph, I calculate that, of the total 14.3 trillion currently allowed, 12.3 trillion was added by Reagan and the Bushes.  This is fully 86% of the total national debt, piled up by these three cynical liars, while they constantly preached the gospel of fiscal responsibility to the American people.

And let's remember, when Democrats spend money it's on things like Social Security and Medicare, and on clean water and air, on safe food and on some control on renegade corporations.  When Republicans spend money, it's largely on wars and giveaways to the rich.

No Republican deserves a second of respect when they lecture us on a financial situation they deliberately, knowingly created.  Obama may be weak, but he is not a crook, and neither were Clinton or Carter.  Reagan and the Bushes were nothing but criminals who looted that $12.3 trillion on behalf of their rich benefactors.

By the way, if you haven't read the excellent comment by Mastercynic here, I suggest you do.  It adds another piece of history to this whole discussion.

Washington Post- Still At It

This oh so sage comment, from a Washington Post editorial this morning, about Mitch McConnell's "plan" to resolve the budget crisis which the Republican party deliberately created:

"McConnell’s escape hatch: The best Washington can do?...

The McConnell approach is convoluted because it is intended to allow Republicans to avoid bringing down the U.S. economy without having to cast politically unpopular votes to raise the debt ceiling...The McConnell plan offers political cover for cowardice and irresponsibility. If it is the best Washington can do, it is better than nothing. But it’s not much of an advertisement for what Washington can do."

No, this plan is not "the best Washington can do."  That would be for the Republicans to get out of the way and let Democrats take serious steps to undo the damage which Conservative economics has done to the country.

After stating perfectly clearly that this "plan" is nothing but a way for Republicans to get themselves out of the very dirty corner they willingly backed themselves into, the Post is still obligated by the Villager rules of the game to blame Democrats equally for the result of Republicans' self-serving, anti-American behavior.  And thus is perpetuated the fiction that this country still has two political parties which have any interest in serving the needs of the American people.

Real Versus Fox

Reuters headline:

"Obama: Seniors Could Be Hurt Without Debt Deal"

Fox headline:

"Obama Threatens to Withhold Social Security Checks From Seniors and Vets"

Update:  Of course, there is no Fox mangling of the truth that Jim Hoft can't beat:

"Shameless… Obama Threatens to Starve Seniors If He Doesn’t Get His Tax Hikes"

Falsiness

We've had truthiness for some time.  Now, a new concept, perhaps created today by the Washington Post:

"Yes, Social Security in the past has not contributed to the nation’s debt. But it’s basically a meaningless fact...We are going to label this with that relatively rare rating: “true but false.”

Yes, it is true that Social Security does not contribute one cent to the national debt.  But that fact doesn't fit with the Republican party line, so we will label it "true but false," i.e. really false, but sort of true in, uh, well, the real world, where Washington Post reporters spend as little time as possible, and which doesn't really count if it interferes with conservative economic cant.

How can a country where this is what passes for top of the line journalism hope to survive?

False Equivalence, Once Again

From Politico:

"Washington’s political mood darkened dramatically Tuesday, as the debt ceiling crisis showed signs of spinning out of control and Republicans began looking for an escape path from the default showdown they helped create.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) set the day’s tone early with a blast aimed at the president but implicitly undercutting House Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s efforts to craft a $2 trillion deficit-reduction package with the administration."

The Republicans "helped" to create this situation?  They created it all by themselves, and it is the height of partisan dishonesty to suggest otherwise.  And it is they, not the Democrats, who are really looking for an escape path, by aiming blasts at the President, right?

But oh, no, it is the duty of the mainstream press to blame Democrats equally for every bit of the corrupt, destructive agenda that is all the Republican party has had to offer for decades.  Otherwise, no one would vote for Republicans, and no votes for Republicans is something which our mainstream press primarily exists to prevent.

Wingnut Wrapup

After days of being boring beyond comprehension, our right wing brethren have apparently been poked by a sharp stick, or something- at least they've let out some painful yelps the last couple of days:

Erika Johnson, Town Hall:  "China: You Know, You Guys Should Really Scale Back Your Military"

Military Budgets, 2010:

United States     687,105,000,000
People's Republic of China     114,300,000,000

China has a military budget one sixth the size of ours.  Maybe someone else should think about cutting their military budget.  Of course, that is not likely to happen as long as every Republican in the country is hiding under the bed whining for mama in the face of the evil Communist/Mooslim threat that faces us.

Erika Johnson, Town Hall:  "Pawlenty: Bachmann's Congressional Accomplishments Are "Nonexistent"

No they're not.  Michelle Bachmann has set a congressional record for ignorant stupidity.

Neil Stevens, Red State:  "Net Neutrality D-Day approaches, Communist-style PROTECT IP"

Marx had so much to say about internet neutrality.

Roger Kimball, Pajamas Media:  ""Say what you like about the News of the World, but their allegations were always backed up with evidence."

Made up evidence, of course, but still...

Wes Vernon, Renew America:  "The real story of Glenn Beck's exit from Fox?   It is well-known that Beck's very public feud with left-wing billionaire George Soros helped propel the Soros machine to double-down on the accelerator of the old moneybag's already well-oiled project to destroy Fox News...Beck's penchant for independent thought included a refusal to join the "ruling class" in its propagandistic goose-stepping hatred for Senator Joseph McCarthy...Earlier this year, he interviewed G. Edward Griffin, author of The Creature from Jekyll Island, who told the Fox host — just to cite one example — that several members of Congress had told him they had asked to see the gold our government supposedly has under ultra-tight security at Fort Knox, and were refused.  From that comes the speculation — added to Griffin's take on the Fed as a nefarious and unconstitutional power in our society — that there is no gold at Fort Knox..."

So let's see now...either Fox fired Beck because their arch-enemy George Soros didn't like him, or because he stood up against propagandistic goose stepping, or because all the gold has been stolen from Fort Knox.  Not a chance that it was because he had lost a third of his audience and almost all of his advertisers and daily made fools out of everyone at Fox News. Or because he had become so mentally unstable that he was totally out of control? No, that couldn't be the reason.  I think it must be the gold thing.

Dan Hooser, Good News Magazine:  "Few people understand how much the wonderful principles of civil liberty and free enterprise originated with God and are taught in the Bible!"

Grow up, Dan.  Really.  Can't you find anything constructive to do with your life?

Daniel J. Flynn, Renew America:  "It's not called 'Dependence' Day"

It's not called Stupidity Day either, but you guys sure trot out plenty of that every July 4th.

World Net Daily:  "Very important open letter to WND readers ..."

Very Important...Give us money.  Bet that one really surprised you.

World Net Daily:  "Dems' 'fundraiser' may have side effects-Mailing of 'Obama's birth certificate' called 'solicitation based on forgery...This is clearly fraud of great proportions.'

That's right, you read that correctly.  Obama is committing forgery by including his birth certificate in fundraising letters.  It will never end, will it?

Jay Clarke, American Thinker:  "Barack Obama has many names.  He's been called Savior, Messiah, and The Anointed One.  A new one is offered here for America to consider.

"Tyrannus Obama Rex."

Obama, the Tyrant King."

"He's been called Savior, Messiah, and The Anointed One."  Not by any of his supporters, of course.  Only by ignorant right wing fools who also call him Satan, Hitler, etc.  So go ahead.  If it makes you happy, call him Obama Tyrannosaurus Rex- the Black Dinosaur- for all I care.  It can't be any more stupid than what you have already done.

Lloyd Marcus, American Thinker:  "Social Justice: Obama and the Left's Not-So-Hidden Agenda is insane, absurd, and evil."

Sure, Lloyd, I can see your point.  Of course justice is evil if it doesn't lower your taxes.  So screw everyone else on earth.  You are getting paid plenty to spread your hate and help White racists return to power, and you are positive that they are going to take care of you after they are in charge.  You just go on counting on that and licking their boots, and see where it gets you.

Howard, Raymond and Jesse Richman, American Thinker:  "How to Restore America's Manufacturing Innovation"

Well, how do you think?  By doing away with all corporate taxes, of course!  I'm sure that will work just great.  And by the way, I'm not kidding.  This article was actually written by three guys named Richman.

Astute Bloggers:  "ACCORDING TO GENESIS 12:3, THE USA ECONOMY CAN'T GET BETTER UNTIL OBAMA STOPS SUPPORTING THE ARABS AND STARTS SUPPORTING ISRAEL"

Well, we'll take that for what it's worth.

Dennis Prager, Town Hall:  "Ingratitude, Thy Name Is South Korea...South Korea has joined with only two other countries in the world in dropping the name of the forthcoming film "Captain America" and using the subtitle, "The First Avenger." The other two countries are Russia and Ukraine."

Keep your eye on the important issues, Dennis.

Dan Miller, Pajamas Media:  "How Do You Solve a Problem like the National Debt?"

How about by not electing Republicans, Dan, since three Republican presidents are responsible for virtually the entire national debt?  That's my suggestion.  Of course Dan has other ideas- taking money away from black people, and bringing an end to the "vast pig slop," i.e. Social Security, which does not contribute one cent to the national debt.  Take your choice.

Bill Zeiser, Pajamas Media:  "Two NY Men Can Marry Now — Why Can’t They Fight?...There is no consistency in New York’s refusal to allow mixed martial arts (MMA) bouts within the state."

Now this is a truly inspiring example of Conservative reasoning- the notion that if you are allowed to do one thing, you should be allowed to do anything else you want.  Following up on this logic, I would like to suggest a couple of other columns that Bill might consider writing:  "Parents can send their children to their rooms- Why can't they slit their throats?"  or maybe  "People are allowed to drink orange juice- why can't they serve other people sulfuric acid?"  I'm sure you can think of enough more to keep Bill in blog posts for the rest of his life.

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "Obama Gave ACORN Groups $541K This Year, Not $80K.  ACORN is the largest radical leftist group in America today."

Jim, Acorn doesn't exist any more.  Go find someone new to lie about.

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "Michelle Obama Downs 1,556 Calorie Lunch at Shake Shack"

The horror.  A perfect example of why Barack Obama should never be allowed to be President- his wife eats lunch, instead of drinking it like Pickles Bush.

World Net Daily Exclusive:  "Not just Delta! Look what else Saudi Arabian dollars buying"

Oh, I don't know...maybe this:

World Net Daily:  "Deception evidence reaches Oval Office?
Analysis says everything president, lawyers said 'was carefully orchestrated and scripted'

What, it would be better if they just babbled at random like you?

World Net Daily Exclusive Breaking News:  "Al-Qaida scoffs at Leon Panetta "

I don't hear them scoffing at Obama so much these days.

Well, wasn't that refreshing.  More soon.

Renew America Makes a Plea

This oh-so-sad story from anticommunist champion Renew America today:

"Special message: Your prayers and support are needed

If you have been inspired and informed by RenewAmerica.com over the years, then now is the time to wholeheartedly hear the call and feel the need of the valiant and remarkable family that has tirelessly worked, suffered, and somehow endured to keep this vital website running — against all odds, through crisis after crisis, never asking for any benefit or compensation for their extraordinary work.

RenewAmerica's president and editor, Stephen Stone, has been under immense pressure for quite some time — persecuted and betrayed by many persons and institutions he has served and trusted, in addition to the everyday challenges of running such a grand and excellent website, while trying to take care of his family.

Even a true man of God, as Stephen is, can sometimes be overtaken by the enemy. Stephen was recently rushed to the hospital with a deadly perforated ulcer just below his stomach. By God's grace, he has survived with the skill of a wonderful surgeon, but he is still in need of much support and help — as the days in a hospital, and the tens of thousands of dollars required to cover it, mounted, leaving the family with an enormous medical bill they have little means to pay.

My dear friends, I believe that many of you are the best of people — true-heart lovers of freedom, America, and our mighty Lord. So, I ask each and every single reader to make it a top priority to send something, no matter how small..."

Well, Renew America guys, I think something is really wrong with this story.  We all know that we live in the country with the greatest medical care system on earth, and we also know that no one in this country goes without adequate medical care.  So I'm going to confidently assume that, in fact, Mr. Stone is relaxing in comfort, knowing that, in the market-driven medical care system, which his blog has promoted in literally hundreds of posts, many companies are competing with each other to see that his needs are met.  Thank the Lord in Heaven above that people like Mr. Stone worked so hard to prevent the implementation of a single payer system in this country, which probably would have forced Mr. Stone to undergo the intolerable indignity of filling out some forms to get his medical care paid for, rather than having our nation's private insurance companies fight over who will pick up the tab for Mr. Stone's medical care.

Enjoy the fruits of the medical care system you worked to preserve, Mr. Stone.

A Blog Problem?

I have been informed by a valued contributor that a couple of comments he left never appeared. With the single exception of the late, not lamented Derek, who some of you may remember, I have never deleted a comment.

If this has happened to anyone else, please try to let me know, and I will see if I can figure out why.  I'm really hoping this explains why I haven't been getting 600 comments on every post, like Atrios.

The Most Pointless Speech Ever Made

This one:

"Obama calls on both parties to work together for deficit reduction in weekly address"

Unless what he is really calling for is for Democrats to cave in to corrupt Republican demands like he always does.  Then, the speech does have a point- a really bad one.

Obama continues:

" We agree that after a decade of racking up deficits and debt, we finally need to get our fiscal house in order. We agree that to do that, both sides are going to have to step outside their comfort zones and make some political sacrifices."

No, Barack, we don't all agree with that.  There are lots of us (probably a majority) who believe that the people who caused this problem- big business, Wall Street and the politicians who do their bidding- should pay the price of this disaster.  That is not sacrifice, it is justice.  As a start, let's return the top tax rate to what it was under Bill Clinton, raise corporate taxes, and impose crippling tariffs on American companies who have decided to manufacture their products in third world countries and sell them here. And a few thousand businessmen in Federal prison wouldn't hurt, either.

Slavery- The New Working Class

I repeat in its entirety a comment today by BuzzFlash editor Mark Karlin:

"Truthout carries a report today that as a result of Scott Walker's assault on public employees, prisoners are now replacing union workers in Racine, Wisconsin.

It might have been perceived as an hysterical exaggeration to predict that the GOP attack on the value of labor would lead to not just low-wage jobs, but to no-wage jobs. One commentator calls this the "new slavery."

This is not the first use of what is, in essence, modern slave labor in the US. Some of the Pentagon's military contractors allegedly use prisoners to assemble military equipment at slave wages (e.g., 23 cents an hour).

With the loss of illegal immigrants as farm workers, prison labor is soon to follow in the agricultural fields of the South.

It was one of the great advances of modern civilization that workers were granted livable wages and that their labor was recognized as having inherent dignity.

Now, we are moving backward to an antebellum society that believes the lowest cost labor is no-cost labor."

I have been predicting this sort of thing for years now.  As long as I have had this blog, I have said that Republicans would soon find a way to effectively reinstitute slavery.  The Republican party is engaged in a deliberate, open attempt to turn this country into a Fascist dictatorship.  How much more obvious do they have to make their intentions before people catch on?  Or, as with the Nazis, are people going to avert their eyes until it takes another 50 million dead to undo the damage?

We are witnessing the rise in the United States a cadre of rulers that have not one shred more decency than Heinrich Himmler or Joseph Goebbels.  I see no way to halt this evil Juggernaut; particularly with a President whose feckless collapses in the face of aggressive behavior rival those of Neville Chamberlain.  The threat this time is internal, not external, but the need is the same; and the man is inadequate to the challenge.

Cut My Taxes

This story from Daily Kos today perfectly illustrates something that I have been saying for years:

"Republicans reluctant on Obama's aggressive deficit reduction goal

Now that President Obama is pushing a larger-than-expected $4 trillion deficit reduction package, guess what: Republicans are suddenly becoming less enthusiastic about debt reduction. While John Boehner supports Obama's goal, support from his GOP leadership colleagues range from lukewarm at best to nonexistent at worst.

The New York Times reported Eric Cantor and Jon Kyl opposed the $4 trillion target:

"Representative Eric Cantor, the House majority leader, and Senator Jon Kyl of Arizona, the ranking Republican on
the Senate Finance Committee, favored the midrange $2 trillion, voicing doubts about how they could sell a $4
trillion deal to their rank and file, officials said, since it would involve tax increases."

So, as always, the thing stopping Republicans from getting serious about fiscal policy is their fear of raising taxes."

As I have repeatedly said, modern American conservatism is about one thing and one thing only: "cut my taxes!"  The rest- the abortion crap, the screaming about socialism, all of it- is nothing but window dressing to enable the rubes to con themselves into thinking that they are motivated by anything besides naked greed.  But in the end, all they want is to keep their government services coming while they evade sharing the cost.  That's why practically every Republican State is a net receiver of tax revenue from the Federal government, paid for by the Democratic States.  They curse about largely nonexistent welfare chiselers and minorities on the dole, while gladly milking the government for every penny they can get their hands on.  They've reached the point where they are fuming in anger about even paying to support schools and fire departments,  or maintaining roads and bridges.  But it's always someone else who wants a free ride.

THIS Is A Democrat

Nancy Pelosi, I mean.  Maybe you should pay attention, Barack:

"After a contentious White House meeting with President Obama and other Congressional leaders, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) returned to the Capitol and drew an important red line: Members of her caucus won't vote for a grand bargain to raise the debt limit and reduce future deficits if the final deal includes cuts to Medicare and Social Security benefits -- and that means it probably won't pass."

That's what a real Democrat sounds like.  That's what the American people want to hear- someone sticking up for them for a change, instead of caving in to Republicans every time.  That is what wins elections.

Stupidity In Action

Of the highest order:

"Unemployment Rate Won’t Hobble Re-Election, David Plouffe Says

The White House’s top political adviser, downplaying the significance of the unemployment rate in the 2012 election, said the Republican candidates are offering the same policies that caused the economic crisis and targeted one potential opponent -- Mitt Romney.

“So all of them are basically just bringing out the same old war horses,” senior adviser David Plouffe said yesterday at a Bloomberg Breakfast in Washington. “Let Wall Street kind of run amok, cut taxes for the wealthy, starve investment in things like education, research and development.”

Cut taxes for the wealthy, starve government investment...and how, exactly does that differ from what Obama has delivered, and is about to agree to by voluntarily going along with the Republicans' phony panic over a budget deficit which they deliberately caused?

“The average American does not view the economy through the prism of GDP or unemployment rates or even monthly jobs numbers,” Plouffe said. “People won’t vote based on the unemployment rate, they’re going to vote based on: ‘How do I feel about my own situation? Do I believe the president makes decisions based on me and my family?’”

Well, does he? Or does he make decisions on whatever Wall Street and the rich want, just like Republicans?  You tell me.  Does cutting Social Security and Medicare so the rich can keep their tax cuts constitute making decisions on behalf of ordinary people?  Does collaborating with Republicans on issue after issue, abandoning everything the Democratic party has had to offer since Franklin Delano Roosevelt, constitute making decisions on behalf of ordinary people?  Does letting the rich off without a price for the damage they have done, and then forcing the rest of us to sacrifice to pay the cost constitute making decisions on behalf of ordinary people?

Does Obama really think he can sell that load of rubbish to the American people?  Doesn't he understand that everyone stupid enough to fall for that already votes Republican?

"ultimately, campaigns are always much more about the future and who do I think has got the best idea, the best vision for where to take the country?”

Yeah, but Barack Obama's "vision" has been proven over and over again to have nothing to do with what he actually does when the time comes to stand up for anyone but the rich.  Why, after what we have seen, would we place a shred of faith in Obama's "vision?"

"Plouffe said he’s confident in Obama’s ability to replicate the grassroots enthusiasm of 2008 by re-engaging the party’s base as well as new and young voters."

Really?  Dream on, guy.  It'll be good practice for your life after November, 2012, when you can sleep as much as you want, since you won't have a job any more.  And that'll be one American job no one will be sorry to see gone.
