The Violence Continues

Just to keep the record complete, although I am sick of these stories, TPM reports:

"Roger Stockham, a 63-year-old Army veteran from California who was reportedly angry at the U.S. government, was arrested by police in Michigan and charged with allegedly threatening to blow up a Mosque in Dearborn."

Of course, the right wingers, who will scream bloody murder if you suggest that an army veteran who was going to blow up a mosque might be a conservative, are already blaring away that he is a Bush-hating liberal.

And here, I thought liberals were all in cahoots with the Muslims.

It Can't Happen Here...

This great news from the New York Times:

"KABUL, Afghanistan — Fraud and mismanagement at Afghanistan’s largest bank have resulted in potential losses of as much as $900 million — three times previous estimates — heightening concerns that the bank could collapse and trigger a broad financial panic...The extent of these losses make it clear that keeping the bank afloat — something the government has said it is determined to do — would require large infusions of cash from an already strained budget.
Banking specialists, businessmen and government officials now fear that word of Kabul Bank’s troubles could prompt a run on solvent banks, destroying the country’s nascent banking system"

Man, aren't you glad that we'd never have an administration that would let something like that happen here- the President and Vice President would have to be really corrupt to sit there and let people rip off the whole banking system, right?  And, I mean, American voters would never fall for someone so corrupt and traitorous as to send us all into poverty while their friends steal us blind.  That's for sure.  Why, our democracy is so secure that it would take something absolutely impossible, like five corrupt Supreme Court justices conspiring to place a crook in the White House, despite the result of the popular vote.  And the constitution loving American patriots we hear so much about these days would be out in force to put a stop to that.

Oh well, at least one thing we don't have to worry about like they do in Afghanistan (see story below)- high military officers having sex with 9 year old boys.  No, we would never sink that low.  Here in America, we leave that sort of thing to Catholic priests.

Another Welcome Viewpoint on Egypt

From the King Dictator of Saudi Arabia:

"No Arab and Muslim human being can bear that some infiltrators, in the name of freedom of expression, have infiltrated into the brotherly people of Egypt, to destabilise its security and stability and they have been exploited to spew out their hatred in destruction, intimidation, burning, looting and inciting a malicious sedition."

Loyalty is such a noble trait.  It is always a heart-warming thing to see the world's dictators stand by each other in their time of need.  Doesn't it  remind you of these guys:

Okay, enough of the nostalgia.  In further news from the Middle East, The New York Times reports this:

"KABUL, Afghanistan — Afghanistan is expected to sign a formal agreement with the United Nations on Sunday to...ban the common practice of boys being used as sex slaves by military commanders"

I'm so happy that this situation is being rectified. Such behavior is grossly unfair.  There are so few employment opportunities for women in Afghanistan.  How can the military be taking away one of the meager chances Afghan girls have to get out of the house and build a career for themselves?

Wingnut Wrapup

It's really been fascinating to watch right wingers writhing like a bucket of worms trying to find some narrative that blames what's happening in Egypt on Obama. They're really in a quandary, because they love them some dictator, so they want to blame Obama for not supporting Mubarak, but at the same time they hate them some Arab, so they really want to blame Obama for not doing everything he can to contribute to the chaos there, which would have the advantage of providing them with so much more material in the coming weeks for their hate-filled rants.  More on that in a few days, when they decide on whatever bogus narrative they are going to run with.

In the meantime, here's the garbage that's on my plate today, which I am delighted to scrape onto your laps:

Suzanne Fields, Town Hall:  "Rep. Michele Bachmann, founder of the tea party caucus in the new Congress, gave more than a response to President Obama's State of the Union speech Tuesday night. We got a look at the new political woman in Washington"

The new Republican political woman anyway- a lying, corrupt, ignorant demagogue.  Meet the new woman, just like the old man.

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "DOLLAR CRUMBLES After Obama’s Disappointing SOTU Performance"

Yes, the dollar crumbled, CRUMBLED, I tell you!  THE END IS NEAR!  Don't believe it?  Look at Jim's own chart!  The dollar crashed from 78.00 to 77.92, a loss of one tenth of a percent!  Doom is nigh!  AND IT'S ALL OBAMA'S FAULT!

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "Paul Ryan Gives GOP Response– Home Run!"

If by "home run," you mean being so tedious, predictable and irrelevant that no one noticed it.  If by "home run" you mean being upstaged by Michelle Bachmann.

World Net Daily:  "Game-changer! Arizona to pass 2012 eligibility law...Obama will have to produce birth certificate to run again"

My suggestion: Since Obama has approximately zero chance of winning in Arizona anyway, let them take him off the ballot. See who ends up looking like idiots when a State refuses to allow its citizens to vote for the sitting President.

And today's recipient of the Keeping Our Eyes on the Big Issues award:

Humberto Fontova, Town Hall:  "Whole Lotta Stupidity—Jimmy Page Visits Cuba"

And a sample of the brilliant analysis in this piece:

"To Led Zeppelin’s former guitarist the visit probably seemed, not only fitting, but long overdue.  Cuba was, after all, the first nation ruled by bearded long-hairs."

The first?  Really?  I'd have thought that might have been Babylon, or the ancient Persian empire, or how about biblical Israel?  Nice try there, Humberto.  You were only off by a few thousand years.

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "Obama Continues to Play the Middle As Violence Erupts in Egypt"

As opposed to the Republican strategy:  take the opportunity to be a malicious demagogue and poison the chances for real reform as much as possible.

Nicole Kurokawa, Town Hall:  "The Speech That Could've Been"

Blah blah blah, no regulation, blah blah blah, cut taxes for the rich, blah blah blah.  That pretty well sums it up.  Surprised?

Lloyd Marcus, Renew America:  "Hallelujah! Finally, We The People have a voice. It's a bright new day! Rep. Michele Bachmann gave the Tea Party Movement response to Obama's State of the Union (bait and switch) address."

Because you didn't have a voice before, since the Commie Obama shut up Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich and Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity and Bill O'Reilly and Eric Cantor and John Boehner, etc.

But I do agree that Michelle Bachmann is your voice, Lloyd:  the voice of stupidity and ignorance.

Astute Bloggers:  "CAN "BUSH'S WARS" BE JUSTIFIABLY BLAMED FOR THE DEFICITS? Nope.
THIS POST NEEDS TO BE DRUMMED INTO EVERY LIBERALS ANTI-BUSH HEAD"

Because the three trillion dollars that Bush wasted on those wars was really just imaginary money, and didn't cost us anything.   Astute thinking there, guys.

The Malcontent:  "Ultimate Hypocrisy, The Leftist Media And the Leftist Bloggers Wind up with Egg on Their Miserable Lying Scandalous Faces.  Cops say, Todd Palin, is not involved in a prostitution ring "

Did you ever hear of this story?  I didn't.  Maybe that's because it appeared in the National Enquirer.  Leftist media indeed.  Anyway, I'm glad to hear that Todd isn't running a prostitution ring.  Sarah couldn't stand the competition.

And now, a winner of the cherished  "Don't Get the Concept" citation:

Dan Riehl, Riehl World View:  "I seem to see all these polls stating Palin's unfavorables are growing. Yet, at a fundraiser for Lubbock Christian School, where Palin is set to speak tonight, seems to suggest otherwise.  Tickets for this event were sold out a day after it was announced... back in September."

Dan, let me try to explain this to you.  That was back in September, not now.  The polls you're complaining about are now.  Get what I'm trying to tell you?  Think about it.  Maybe you'll figure it out.

And this frightening revelation:

Joe Kovacs, World Net Daily EXCLUSIVE:  "Are you eating food sacrificed to idols?  American pastor sounds alarm on supermarkets, restaurants...Whole Foods is among the growing number of U.S. companies offering Islamically permissible "halal" products at its stores. When you bite into a delicious pizza, succulent sandwich or luscious lamb chops, are you possibly eating food that has been sacrificed to idols?"

Following in their long tradition, World Net Daily leads the nation's press in bringing you the truly pressing issues of the day.  I'll tell you one thing, though.  If I were an idol, I sure wouldn't be bought off with a pizza.

David Harsanyi, Real Clear Politics:  "Really, was this country ever about being proud that your children ended up in the same plant you slaved in for 30 years? Even with a promise of a union pension and -- if you're lucky -- an "occasional" promotion, it sounds like a soul-crushing grind you'd want your offspring to escape, tout de suite."

No, of course that's not what we want, David.  We're looking forward to our children living on a heating grate in an alley and experiencing the fulfilling life of going through dumpsters to collect cans so they can get enough money to eat.  That's the real American spirit!

Kathryn Lopez, Town Hall:  "New Leaders in Civil Rights"

Don't be surprised now- it's Rick Santorum and John Boehner.  Yes, that's what Kathryn says!  I guess they are the new leaders in Civil Rights because they are leading our country away from Civil Rights.  That's a sort of leadership.  But on the other hand, as Kathryn points out, they are firmly in favor of making government subsidize private school for the rich (otherwise known as school vouchers.) Giveaways for the wealthy- the new frontier in freedom.

And now, the They'll Never Change Certificate for today:

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "It’s Obama’s Fault… Looters Break Into King Tut Museum & Destroy Artifacts"

Yes, he's serious.  It's Obama's fault that people are looting eight thousand miles away.

And next, today's edition of Things We Don't Need to Listen To:

Red State:  "Elliott Abrams on Egypt and Democracy"

Elliot Abrams was Reagan's point man in funneling millions to the right wing drug-dealing terrorist Contras, so they could overthrow the legally elected government of Nicaragua.  We have so much to learn from him about democracy.

Roger Kimball, Pajamas Media:  "Egypt: What Sauce Will Obama Use When He Eats His Words?"

Of course, he hasn't said much of anything yet, but as soon as he does, boy are we ready to slime him for it, whatever it is. Because we are American Patriots.  However, if the circumstances arise, could I recommend a nice tomatillo chipotle salsa?  It goes so well with words.

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "MARXISTS RALLY to Overthrow Tunisian, Egyptian & American Regimes"

The "Marxists" consisting, as far as I can tell from Jim's article, in two people holding a sign.  Not a big threat yet, Jim.  So, why not take a day off?  Really, thinking up this sort of thing can't be good for your mental health.  Such as it is.

This is Democracy?

News from Egypt:  Hosni Mubarak has for the first time appointed a vice president, thus apparently ending his plans to have his son succeed him.

Since when does the leader of a supposedly Democratic country get to have his son take over?

Oh, yeah:

I almost forgot.

Whither the Egyptian Military?

A lot of people seem to think that the outcome of the situation in Egypt depends on what role the Egyptian military takes, and who they back.  Here is an interesting article about this issue, from Al Jazeera.

To be honest, I don't even know enough about this to have an opinion (how unusual) but I thought it was a good read.

Update:  No good deed goes unpunished, of course:

"Egypt Shuts Down Al Jazeera Cairo bureau."

Egypt?

Good or bad?  Who can tell at this point?

I see that protests have now spread to the normally peaceful Jordan, a country with its own share of congenital problems. The next few weeks promise to be interesting.

New Black Panthers- Another Republican Hoax?

Some of you may remember the story of the "New Black Panther Party."  This involves an allegation of voter intimidation from the 2008 election, when two members of this alleged group (which seemed to have a total membership of eight) showed up outside a Philadelphia polling place, one of them carrying a billy club, and were filmed by a videographer and then used as a Republican propaganda to claim that Democrats were engaged in voter suppression.

These "New Black Panthers" were not prosecuted, because the Justice department could not find a single voter that felt intimidated by them, sort of undermining the whole narrative.  This decision was taken by the Bush Justice department before Obama became President, but it has become the subject of endless attacks on Obama, claiming that it was his decision, and that it proves that he is an anti-white racist.  These attacks continue to this day, frequently citing this incident as legitimate grounds to impeach Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder, who, coincidentally, is also black.

Now we have a story from Talking Points Memo indicating that this whole incident may have been nothing but another self-generated, misreported Republican dirty trick after the fashion of the famous Acorn-pimp fabrication.

It turns out that the tape this videographer took was not released in its entirety.  Left out were sections where Republican operatives stopped him from freely filming, screaming:

"We're on the same team," says another Republican poll watcher off screen.
"You're fucking up the story. Don't fuck up the story," one unidentified poll watcher tells Morse."

It's worth noting that the "U.S. Civil Rights Commission," which was packed with white, right wing Christian activists during Bush's term, issued a report on this incident which only included the apparently damning parts of the tape, omitting including the section I've discussed above.

So, it seems that these dozens if not hundreds of demands for Obama's impeachment, delivered in the most belligerent terms, and which continue to this day, are all the product of one more malignant Republican hoax.

Funny, isn't it, that after two years,  white Conservatives still can't find anything to hang their hatred of Obama on, but lies and distortions.  I wonder what really makes them  really hate him so much.

Well, no I don't.  I think I've figured it out.  I bet you have too.

Stories Too Unimportant For the Mainstream Media

A Republican Supreme Court Justice knowingly swindled the Federal government out of several hundred thousand dollars.

When is someone going to care about that?  Apparently, never.

March For Life Draws the Usual Billions of Participants

Since the teabaggers' demonstrations aren't being financed by the likes of the Koch Brothers any more, Green Eagle hasn't had much opportunity to exercise his protest-reporting skills, so I thought I would take a look at media coverage of the 2011 March For Life in Washington D.C.- the big day of the year for anti-abortion fanatics.  If you google "2011 March For Life," you will find dozens and dozens of Catholic parishes and other organizations, religious and right wing secular, promoting this event.  Looking for information about how many people showed up, I saw estimates at these sites ranging from 200,000 to 500,000 people.

Well, I like to look at pictures of the marches themselves.  Here are a couple of photos.  I want to remind my readers that I follow a strict policy of only showing images that have the largest number of people in them, in an effort to be fair to march organizers.

If you'd like to look at a few more pictures, I suggest you look here, at the right wing website Human Events.

Now, I've been estimating the size of crowds since the Vietnam war days of the late sixties.  In previous posts, I have gone over my methods, and I will not repeat myself here.  It interests me that I found no pictures looking out from, say, the Capitol steps, and showing the whole crowd, which are normally a staple of Washington protest coverage.  These are low resolution photos, but here is what I think I see here.  The top photo shows a maximum of 12,000 or 14,000 people.  As for the lower one, I am being generous if I claim there are 2,000 people in it.  And again, let me reiterate that I always show pictures of the largest number of people I can find.

For a national march with so much backing, this is an absolutely pathetic turnout- less than a tenth of the number of people that Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert got to show up for a march about nothing at all.  I believe this is important because it backs up my continued claim, based on my personal observation of these events, that the teabaggers and their associates are a minuscule phenomenon, blown up to appear to be a major national force by the press and the Republican party, because it suits their political interests to claim massive popular support for their serve-the-rich behavior.

So far, the press doesn't seem to be biting on this one.  Maybe the turnout was so miserable that even our mainstream media can't delude themselves into believing that it represents any significant number of people; or maybe they are just leaving the field clear to the right wingers to delude themselves into thinking they are any more than suckers of the rich.

Egypt- Green Eagle Talks About Something He Knows Nothing About

How unusual, huh?  Well, what do you expect from a parrot?

I have to say that, at this point, I can't figure out what's going on in Egypt.  But it can still provide me with some innocent amusement.  First, this comment, from the BBC:

"Finally, it would pose painful dilemmas for Western policy-makers who have long favoured gradual political reform in the region, fearful that the alternative could be the breakdown of stability and the rise of extremism."

I think it's fair to translate the phrase "gradual politcal reform" as "staying in the hands of the same dictator for decades, so it's much easier to bribe him to do whatever we damned want."  Anyone think that's not an accurate interpretation?

And this amusing comment from TPM:

"From an account of a May speech by former Blackwater CEO Erik Prince: "Prince beamed with pride when he said that Blackwater continues to train 'security personnel' from countries like Egypt and Pakistan."

How'd that work out for your clients, huh, Erick?  This reminds me of the whole Bush administration, of which Erick was such a vital, if unofficial part.  Remember the Woody Allen thing where the lady in a restaurant complains, "such bad food, and such small portions?"  Well that sort of sums up everything to do with the Bush Administration- so evil, and so bad at it.

Palin Claims Obama's Wrong, USSR Won The Space Race

Well, she should know.  She can see space from her front porch.

A Tidbit from the Shawna Forde Right Wing Terrorist Trial

What the right is bringing to our country, from the Shawna Forde trial:

"(Her only surviving victim) testified about people posing as law enforcement officers coming into her home and shooting and killing her husband, Raul "Junior" Flores, shooting and wounding her, then turning the gun on their 9-year old daughter Brisenia.

"He's all out of bullets by then because he's used them on me and Junior. So he stands there and he loads the gun right in front of her (Brisenia)," Gonzalez says.Prosecutor Kellie Johnson asks, "And is this something you can see happening?"Gonzalez answers, "I can hear it happening. I can hear her telling him to 'please don't shoot me.'"

The child is then shot and killed.

This is the face of evil.  The only difference between these people and Idi Amin or Robert Mugabe is the scale of their depredations.  And believe me, as long as the nation is willing to avert its face from the connection between these people and one of our two major political parties, the violence will grow until it will stand alongside the worst of murderous dictators.  The monster has already been let out of its cage.  It is only a question of what it will take before the rest of us determine to stop it.

Crazy- That's Rich Talk for Crooked

An amusing reminder of the world of American finance over the last couple of decades:

"Texas billionaire Allen Stanford, who allegedly defrauded investors of millions of dollars in a vast offshore Ponzi scheme, isn't currently competent to stand trial, a federal judge ruled Wednesday.

"In light of the testimony presented and the reports submitted by the three psychiatrists - including the Government's own expert, Dr. Rosenblatt - the Court has no viable alternative but to find that Stanford does not have the present mental capacity to effectively assist his attorneys in preparing his defense," writes (Federal Judge David) Hittner."

Here's a suggestion:  I think someone might keep an eye on Dr. Rosenblatt.  I wouldn't be surprised to see him driving around in a very nice Ferrari or relaxing poolside at his new vacation home in Barbados.

Wingnut Wrapup Followup

You may remember (or likely you have blotted it out- can't say that I blame you) that, a few weeks ago, I featured in Wingnut Wrapup a number of right wing comments calling for the jailing, and trial for murder of union leaders in New York for supposedly calling for a slowdown of cleanup efforts after recent snowstorms in which a couple of people died.  That was preposterous enough, but now (of course) we learn this:

"The story rocketed around New York City when streets went uncleared after the Dec. 26 blizzard: Sanitation workers, angry about job reductions, had deliberately staged a work slowdown.

And it occurred because one man, Councilman Daniel J. Halloran, Republican of Queens, said five city workers had come to his office during the storm and told him they had been explicitly ordered to take part in a slowdown to embarrass Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg.

"...investigators had hoped that extensive publicity would bring out others with knowledge of the purported plot. That has not happened...More recently, the councilman has said the workers were not explicitly told to take part in a slowdown, but were subtly informed there was no need to rush while clearing the snow."

"Subtly informed."  Perhaps by mental telepathy, or secret Masonic hand gestures.

Who is Halloran?

"He campaigned as a conservative Republican with the support of Tea Party organizers, advocating personal responsibility and limited government."

Apparently personal responsibility does not extend to the issue of spreading smears and lies about Democrats and their supporters.  This guy is a good Republican and a good Teabagger, and he is performing exactly as he is expected to perform; and the right wing media machine has taken his lie and run with it.  We will never see a correction or an apology from any one of them, needless to say.

No, He Was Just a Lone Nut

Politico reports today:

"In the days leading up to his attempt to assassinate Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.), alleged shooter Jared Lee Loughner researched political assassins and punishments he could face for murder, an examination of his computer has found."

So Loughner saw his act as a political assassination of a Democrat.  But of course, the wingnuts know better- he couldn't be one of them.

Are you surprised?  No, I didn't think so.

Wingnut Wrapup- Special "My Motherland" Edition

Here's a classic example of the growth of a right wing smear.  A big issue on the right the last week or so centers on a song, entitled "My Motherland," played by a Chinese pianist at the recent White House dinner for the head of the Chinese government.  If you start searching around, you will find literally hundreds of web posts concerning this incident.  I'm only going to annoy you with a few of them:

Rightpundits:  "So, we go from a president that has traveled the world to apologize for the U.S.A. and to bow to the ground before kings and other dictators to now having that same president allowing an anti-American propaganda song to be played at an official state dinner right here at home!...this fits with Obama’s agenda. Humiliating the U.S. among foreigners is his stock-in-trade."

Nicholas Eberstadt, The American (publication of the American Enterprise Institute:)  "A State Insult with Chinese Characteristics...“My Motherland” is not a “Chinese song” in any ordinary meaning of the term. Instead, it is a Mao-era propaganda classic: the theme from "Triangle Hill" (Shangganling), a film in which heroic Chinese forces fight, kill, and eventually beat Americans in pitched battle during the Korean War."

Christy Satterfield, World Net Daily:  "Lang Lang thought he was so clever. He was chosen to perform at the elaborate butt-kissing marathon hosted by Obama. He played a song for patriots – anti-American patriots that is. The song is called "My Motherland," and it is more than offensive; it's downright hateful. The song was featured in a 1956 film known as "Battle on Shangangling." It's about greeting "jackals," aka American soldiers with rifles...Obama probably didn't even realize what was happening. I wouldn't be surprised to find out he enjoyed Lang's musical rendition of "I hate America."

He has helped our enemy embarass us in front of the entire world. Who in their right mind would respect us now? Obama allowed us to be humiliated. He allowed Lang and Hu to spit in our face. He's made us appear weak and inferior.

And where would an ugly smear be without Jim Hoft to jump onboard?   Here's Jim's contribution:

"White House Says Pro-Commie Anti-American Song Played at Obama White House State Dinner Was Not an Insult...The White House claims that the anti-American song played at the Obama White House State Dinner was not an insult.

That’s bold… Maybe they liked it?"

There are tons more like this, all filled with the same "facts" and the same hatred and contempt.

Now it's Green Eagle's turn for a little contempt.  I googled "My Motherland."  Total time involved, under one minute. Here's page one of the Google search:

As you can see, the second link is to Wikipedia.  I found this there:

"Although the song was written for the movie about Korean War in 1950s, there is no mention of the war at all. It describes a soldier (or anyone who is away from home) thinking about his home and his family. Thus, this song is extremely popular even when the movie itself is almost forgotten."

What's more, the same Wikipedia article actually contains the words to this song:

"A great river flows, its waves wide and calm
Wind blows through rice flowers, bearing fragrance to both shores
My family live right there by the water
I am used to hearing the punters' call
And seeing the white sails on the boats

A great river flows, its waves wide and calm
Wind blows through rice flowers, bearing fragrance to both shores
My family live right there by the water
I am used to hearing the punters' call
And seeing the white sails on the boats

This is the beautiful motherland
The place where I grew up
On this expansive stretch of land
Everywhere there is wonderful scenery to behold

The young ladies are like flowers
The young men's hearts are big and determined
In order to usher in a new era
They've woken the sleeping mountains
And changed the face of the river

This is the heroic motherland
The place where I grew up
On this stretch of ancient land
There is youthful vigour everywhere

Great mountains, great rivers, a great land
Every road is broad and wide
If the friends come, there is fine wine
But if the wolves come
Those who greet him have hunting guns

This is the strong motherland
The place where I grew up
On this stretch of warm and friendly land
There is peaceful sunshine everywhere"

Real anti-American propaganda, huh?

There's nothing they won't lie about; there's nothing they won't use to concoct a smear; and there will never be an occasion when they do the right thing.  And if you haven't figured that out by now (I'm speaking to you, O mainstream media) you are barely less stupid and ignorant than their followers.

Michelle Bachmann- A Case Study in Lying

I don't have much of an introduction to this- it's no more than we expect.  Here is a list of some of the lies Michelle Bachmann managed to fit into her six and a half minute nationally televised State of the Union address last night, courtesy of Media Matters:

"Bachmann: "Failed Stimulus," And Unemployment "Spiked"

Unemployment Didn't "Spike" — It Grew Steadily Under Bush-Era Policies... The tally, to date: Mr. Obama can be held accountable for the net loss of 41,000 jobs (671,000 - 630,000), while the Republicans should be held responsible for the net losses of 7,796,000 jobs.

Bachmann Wrongly Blamed President Bush's Final Year Of Deficits On President Obama: "

Bachmann Repeated "16,500" IRS Agents' Lie:  BACHMANN:  "What did we buy? Instead of a leaner, smarter government, we bought a bureaucracy that tells us which light bulbs to buy, and which will put 16,500 IRS agents in charge of policing President Obama's healthcare bill."

Bachmann: Repeal Affordable Care Act, Or "Be Forced To Rely On Government-Run Coverage"
There Is No "Government-Run Coverage" In The Affordable Care Act

Bachmann Claimed The Affordable Care Act Doesn't Allow Insurance Sales Across State Lines

Health Care Reform Already Permits Insurance Sales Across State Lines

Bachmann Got It Wrong On Corporate Tax Rates: "BACHMANN: We need to start making things again in this country. And we can do that by reducing the tax and regulatory burden on job creators. America will have the highest corporate tax rate in the world. Think about that."

According to the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities: "The U.S. corporate tax burden is smaller than average for developed countries"

It would be well worth your time to read the rest of this article, which provides complete documentation to back up its claims, because this litany of lies is not just the product of Michelle Bachmann's deranged ignorance; it forms the core of the vicious partisan assault on Obama which has been carried out for two years by the Republican party, and it's all false.

An Amusing Postscript:

Erick Erickson's take on Bachmann's speech: "Michelle Bachmann gave the best speech of the night. Michelle Bachmann kept to nuts and bolts. Her speech was based on actual economic data with actual, substantive policy suggestions for change."

Actual economic data.  Serious analysis from your newest CNN expert.

Clarence Thomas, Crook

Well, of course, all conservative justices are totally corrupt, but this guy is a crook on a personal level, pure and simple.

Here's the story, from Politico:

"Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has amended 13 years’ worth of disclosure reports to include details of wife Virginia Thomas’s sources of income, documents released on Monday show.

The documents indicate that Thomas’s wife, who goes by Ginni, had worked for Hillsdale College in Michigan, the Heritage Foundation and the Republican leadership in the House of Representatives, among other entities.

Like all federal judges, Thomas must file annual disclosure reports on his personal finances, but he had omitted details of his wife’s earnings in what he wrote was a “misunderstanding of the filing instructions.” He also had checked a box marking no spousal income.

Last week, watchdog group Common Cause reported that none of the nearly $690,000 the Heritage Foundation said it had paid Ginni Thomas between 2003 and 2007 had been reported on Justice Thomas’s annual financial disclosure forms."

A "misunderstanding of the filing instructions."

For your information, here is a section of the disclosure form submitted by Justice Thomas in 2009:

"Spouse's Non Investment Income."  Not really much to misunderstand, is there?  This man is a crook who has, over the years, stolen hundreds of thousands of dollars from the United States government.  If he were a Democrat, the press and the Republicans would hound him out of office in a week.  But he's not a Democrat, he's a Republican, so he's going to sit there, polluting every Supreme Court decision he participates in, until the day he dies.

Who Caused the National Debt?

Anonymous repeats once again one of the biggest of all Republican lies:  that Democrats are responsible for our nation's budget imbalances, and that Republicans are fiscally responsible.

Well, from Wikipedia, here are the actual facts, which Anonymous or anyone else could have found within two minutes:

As can be seen instantly, the vast bulk of our national debt was piled up in the administrations of Ronald Reagan and the two Bushes, the conservatives' champions of fiscal virtue.  This includes, by the way, the budget with a $1.7 trillion dollar deficit passed in October of 2008, during Bush's term, which conservatives consistently blame on Obama.

In fact, Republicans have, since Nixon, adopted a policy of squandering the nation's money on the rich when they are in power, and then screaming  like banshees about the debt when Democrats are in charge, to prevent Dems from acting in any way that does not benefit multinational corporations and their owners.  That is the reality of Republican fiscal policy, and it is worth noting that the people who call themselves conservative have not a word to say against it when Republicans are in power.  Their rage is stoked up for years, so they can let it loose on Democrats who attempt to bring the condition of American workers into parity with every other industrialized nation on earth.

This malignant falsehood is one of the principal reasons that the Republican party continues to exist despite its century long history of depredation of our economy.  I may not be able to prevent the lie from being spread at Red State, Town Hall and the like, or, unfortunately at CNN and Fox News too.  But I won't sit back while right wing jackals try to spread it here.

Cheap Laugh of the Day

"Rush Limbaugh on SOTU: “Who Wants To Sit There And Listen To Somebody Lie For An Hour And Fifteen Minutes?”

Thanks to Jim Hoft at Gateway Pundit for bringing this to our attention.  Jim is an internationally known expert on lying, as Green Eagle readers know so well.

Evil Bureaucrats or You?

I want to bring to your attention this article by Katie Gage at Town Hall, where she asks the oh-so-pertinent question:

"Do Bureaucrats Know Better Than You? The NLRB Thinks So"

Needless to say, Katie doesn't think so, and how could you help but agree with her?  Here are a few areas, for example, where Green Eagle knows far more than any bureaucrat:

If the government decides to build a bridge or a dam, Green Eagle knows far better than government bureaucrats where that bridge or dam should be built, and what it should be made of.

If a pharmaceutical company wants to sell a drug in the United States, Green Eagle is far more capable than any government bureaucrat of evaluating the thousands of pages of statistical evidence it has submitted alleging that the drug is safe.

If our military wants to carry out any offensives in Afghanistan, Green Eagle is far more capable than any military officer (after all, what are military officers but government bureacrats?) of making decisions about where to attack, what weapons to use, how many soldiers to commit to the fight, etc.

I could go on here, but I guess you get my point.  It has become accepted conservative wisdom  that no one who knows anything is competent to make any decisions. For example, just yesterday I cited a post at a widely read right wing website condemning the fact that environmentalists were allowed to express an opinion about the damage done to the Gulf by the BP oil spill.  Instead, it has now become established on the right that important decisions are far better made by packs of angry, greed-maddened ignoramuses.

This is not an accidental doctrine.  If large numbers of Americans can be trained to disregard any opinion coming from someone who understands the issues, they are so much more easily persuaded to follow the bidding of whoever is shouting at them the loudest.  And now that it seems to be established that saying anything can be forbidden if you are a liberal (remember Keith Olbermann?) the shouting is all coming from the likes of Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, and other paid liars.   This phenomenon is not the triumph of ignorance, it is just one more triumph of money over human decency; one more step from democracy to rule by the rich; one more step from being the greatest nation on earth to becoming nothing but another tinhorn third world dictatorship living by selling cheap labor to the rest of the world, and beating its citizens down to keep things like that.

Welcome to Republican World.

I Stand Up for Bill Ayers

One of the inevitable responses of right wingers when we try to talk about their incessant provocation of violence is to talk about the Weatherman and the few other acts of violence that occurred during the Vietnam war era.

Now first let me make a statement that I think virtually no other person online can make:  I stood up to Bill Ayers, Bernardine Dohrn and the Weathermen at the time.  I openly stood against the formation of the Weatherman as it was being created, not in some newspaper article or vapid essay, but at the meetings where the Weatherman was born, and in full view of Ayers, Dohrn and their followers.  I openly opposed their intent to resort to violence; and what became of them fully justified the position of those I stood with.

Now on to one of the worst examples of false equivalence between left and right.  The Vietnam "war" was an unprovoked aggression by the United States against a foreign country in which, by all estimates, between two and four million Vietnamese civilians were murdered by our military.  There is no argument with these figures, except on the planet where there is no global warming, where torture is okay, and where anything a rich person does is perfectly okay.

In opposing the war, we were fighting to stop that slaughter, and eventually succeeded.  In the outrage over the couple of American civilians killed, where can you find a shred of sympathy for the millions that we murdered?  How many more millions might have died if we had not done whatever we could think of to stop our government's aggression?  And until an expression of horror of equal proportion is expressed about those millions of dead Vietnamese, I cannot take seriously the right's wails of anguish over a couple of dead Americans.

The teabaggers, on the other hand, are threatening, and rapidly turning to, violence in order to get their taxes cut.

There is a big difference between the means appropriate to an effort to stop the slaughter of millions, and those acceptable to get someone to cut your taxes.  It's time the right and the media figure that out.

Wingnut Wrapup

Man, I've been having trouble facing these guys lately.  But you know what they say.  Someone's got to do it.  So, I did it.  And here's the results for today:

First, a great big shout of thanks to the guys at Red State, for putting to rest once and for all any questions about whether Conservative spokesmen are deliberately inciting violence:

"Here at RedState, we too have drawn a line. Those who wish to write on the front page of RedState must make the... pledge.  ...once before, our nation was forced to repudiate the Supreme Court with mass bloodshed. We remain steadfast in our belief that this will not be necessary again, but only if those committed to justice do not waiver or compromise, and send a clear and unmistakable signal to their elected officials of what must be necessary to earn our support."

I see.  They won't resort to mass bloodshed as long as we do exactly what they want.  That's really comforting.  I've spoken before about my fear that, not being satisfied with the results produced by the likes of Jared Lee Loughner, the right would soon start inciting much worse violence from militia-style groups.  Well, here they go.  Hold on to your seats.

And let's not forget that Keith Olbermann can be eliminated from the public forum for his liberal views, but the creator and owner of this website is still on CNN, being promoted nationwide as a reasonable contributor to our public discourse.

Austin Hill, Town Hall:  "Could ObamaCare Kill The American Work Ethic?..."Mr. Elmendorf stated that, in some cases, Americans will simply choose not to work, because their needs for healthcare will be provided by the enhanced Medicaid funding that is provided for in the Obamacare law."

Yeah, they'll just choose not to work if they have medical care.  It's not like they need money for food, or to pay the rent, or anything.  They'll just lie in the street and starve until someone takes them away in an ambulance and feeds them until they are healthy, and then they can start the same thing all over again.  That's really the American dream.

Doug Giles, Town Hall:  "Rebellion to Tyrants is Obedience to God"

Right wingers now expect us to take religious instruction from a lying smear master who has seemingly never done an honest thing in his life.  Well, that's about par for the course.

Vladimir, Town Hall:  "The Oil Spill Commissioner’s Anti-Oil Bias...Former Democratic Senator Bob Graham of Florida is co-chair of the President’s Oil Spill Commission. The Commission, stacked with environmentalists and Harvard lawyers"

What the hell would environmentalists and Harvard lawyers know about the environmental damage caused by the oil spill, or who is legally responsible?  No, much better to take Vladimir's advice and let oil industry executives decide who should pick up the tab.  That makes sooo much sense.

Confederate Yankee:  "Media Continues Praising The Terrorist Left"

What "terrorist left," you might ask?

Confederate Yankee:  "Another Leftist Assassin, Hidden by His Allies...At some point, wearing black clothes and a bullet-proof vest, 22 year-old Casey Brezik bolted out of a classroom, knife in hand, and slashed the throat of a dean. As he would later admit, he confused the dean with Nixon."

Aah yes, someone who thought their college dean was Richard Nixon.  There are just thousands of those lurking out there on the left.  Listen, you dick: Jared Lee Loughner didn't think his congresswoman was Richard Nixon- he knew exactly who she was and exactly why he decided to shoot her.  That's why he's a right wing terrorist, and the other guy is just a psychotic asshole.

Ron Radosh, Pajamas Media:  "Glenn Beck, Frances Fox Piven, and How the New York Times Falsely Depicts the Controversy...Who is the one inciting violence"

Francis Fox Piven?  Funny how the deranged, evil, lying Glenn Beck, who is provided with a daily national platform to spew his racism, his hatred and his calls for violence, is the equivalent of someone nobody has ever heard of, who (by the way) has not spewed racism, hatred and violence.  She joins Bill Ayers, Howard Zinn and Saul Alinsky in the pantheon of long-forgotten and insignificant left wing figures, who are somehow the equivalent of Rush Limbaugh, Beck and Palin, who are paid millions today to spread hatred.

Chris Salcedo, Pajamas Media:  "How to Appeal to Hispanics: DON’T!"

That's right.  Just abandon them, Repubicans.  They're worth more as enemies.  You're running through your enemies so fast that you are down to blaming the destruction of Western civilization on Francis Fox Piven.  I think you'd better be careful to save the ones you still have left.

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "Obama’s been in office for only 2 years and already they’re playing Red Chinese commie songs at State Dinners in the White House."

At least Obama didn't make the Chinese listen to "When the Eagle Soars."  That would have really been cruel.

Star Parker, World Net Daily:  "Health-care repeal not theater – it was reality TV"

Oh, you mean like those daytime shows where ignorant cracker families come on and get paid to humiliate themselves in public?  That's what the Republicans are like?  I can see that.

World Net Daily:  "REBELLION IN AMERICA...Faceoff! States tell feds to back down...What if Washington made a law and nobody obeyed?"

Then they'd all be criminals.  Simple answers to simple questions.

World Net Daily EXCLUSIVE!  "U.S. pushing Muslim to replace Christian"

This would be in the Cote d'Ivoire, where the U. S. is pushing to have a Muslim who won the presidential election there replace the malignant Christian dictator who refuses to give up power.  How could we ever betray our values like that?

World Net Daily:  "Let's get the 'F' out of media! Exclusive: Pat Boone identifies those truly responsible for youth's depravity"

Yup, just what you expected.  That shooter guy in Arizona?  It was all caused by someone saying "fuck" on TV.  Aren't you glad Pat solved that problem for us?  Now, how about another tax cut?

And now, the Grand Conservative Delusion of the Day:

Stella Paul, American Thinker:  "As far as I'm concerned, we already have our first female combat soldier, a breathtakingly brave warrior who suffers the slings and arrows of outrageous misfortune for the sake of our freedom, every day.

Sarah Palin stands alone in America and the world. Name one other public figure anywhere on the globe today who symbolizes the uncompromising fight for liberty."

Well, let's see...how about Idi Amin?  Oh no, wait, he's dead.  Oh, I've got it.  Baby Doc Duvalier.  I'd say he'd fit, as far as I can tell.  He's all about the liberty to get rich while stabbing your country in the back.  Just like Sarah.

And here's the abomination that we need to worry the least about today:

Astute Bloggers:  "MUSLIM CAST MEMBER IN BATMAN BETRAYS THE SPIRIT OF THE MASKED MANHUNTER"

The "Spirit of the Masked Manhunter."  One of our most cherished American legends.  The tragedy of seeing that noble ideal trampled into the dust by a Muslim cast member- it's almost too much to bear.  The founding fathers would never have allowed that.

And let's follow that up with a tin medal for the most preposterous attempt to blame Obama for something in at least six or seven hours:

Astute Bloggers:  "Powerful bomb found on the MLK route in Spokane Washinton...THIS BOMB WAS PROBABLY MADE AND PLANTED BY WHITE SUPREMACISTS - WHO ARE ALL OVER THE PLACE IN THE STATE OF WASHINGTON....IT'S A RESULT OF 2 YEARS OF OBAMA'S APPEASEMENT OF JIHAD."

Yeah, that's right.  It's Obama's fault that some white racist decided to kill black people.  Of course it is.  Everything is his fault.

But wait, there's more!  The Astute ones aren't done being stupid today:

Astute Bloggers:  "THE REAL ROOT CAUSE OF THE LEFT'S HYSTERICAL CHARGES AGAINST THE RIGHT REGARDING LOGHNER: DENIAL OF GLOBAL JIHAD AND FEAR OF WW4"

WW4?  I didn't even notice WW3.  Maybe WW4 won't be so bad if the last one went by so quietly.  And by the way, I really don't remember Loughner expressing anything one way or the other about global jihad.  On the other hand, he didn't want to pay his taxes.  Just like you guys.

Astute Bloggers:  "DOES OBAMA HAVE PARASITES - OR SOMETHING WORSE, LIKE HIV?...A medical researcher I contacted knew of no intestinal parasites that could not be rather easily eliminated, once diagnosed.  I ASK YOU: Maybe this is a cover up for something worse? HIV?

I DEMAND OBAMA RELEASE HIS FULL AND COMPLETE MEDICAL RECORDS."

Drop dead, asshole.  How much poison can one blog spread in one day?

And it's time, I think, to check in with our king of crazy, Henry Makow, for his latest revelation concerning our nation's history:

"The outlaw Jesse James killed the actor John Wilkes Booth at the Grand Avenue Hotel in Enid, Oklahoma in 1903 after Booth repeatedly reneged on his oath to never talk about his secret membership in the Masonic-oriented Knights of the Golden Circle (KGC) and his role in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln."

Jesse James died in 1882, but never underestimate the long arm of the Illuminati.

Finally, this one struck close to home:

Paul Byrne, Renew America:  "Do your organs belong to the government?"

Well, if you think my wife's keyboard player is giving Obama his Hammond, you're crazy.

Goodbye Keith

In all my reporting on the idiocies and lies of the wingnuts, here's one thing I found just too boring and stupid to follow: the fact that, virtually every day, there are stories about a supposed attempt by the left to silence right wing talk radio, and TV liars like Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity.  Despite the fact that there is not a shred of evidence for this claim, they go on with this nonsense endlessly, like the equally fictional war on Christmas.

Well, here's the reality of press suppression in this country:  MSNBC just fired their top-rated broadcaster.  And make no mistake about the reason: it was solely because he dared to tell the truth in public.  And if you think Rachel, Ed Schultz, and that clown O'Donnell don't get the message, you really are fooling yourself.  If Keith is expendable they all are.  It is apparently tolerable for CNN to employ the right wing hatemonger and professional liar Erick Erickson.  But being a moderate liberal is too much for this country to allow anyone a public voice.

But of course, whoever owns these networks has the right to fire anyone they want, right?  And thanks to the sainted Ronald Reagan, no one owns the media anymore but the rich.  How many times have you heard decisions like this justified by claims that "it's just business" or that it's all about profits and not about the person's political views at all?  Well, I'd like someone to explain to me how it's all about profits when a network fires its most highly rated star.

This is not a minor moment in our history as a nation.  It is a major legitimation of the right to stifle dissent.  It is a giant step toward fascism; and I am not using the term figuratively. When it becomes acceptable for the rich and powerful to stifle dissent, totalitarianism is on the way.

Ah, Louisiana

From a poll in Louisiana, reported at Daily Kos:

"Reelect Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) 49
Prefer someone else 40"

Or as Green Eagle would have stated the question:

Reelect Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) 49
Not certifiably brain-dead 40

When I worked in Shreveport, I always used to get such a laugh driving across the bridge between Shreveport and Bossier City, and seeing the sign on it which still says "Huey Long, Governor."  Man, Huey must be spinning in his grave to think that this clown is sitting in his office.

Anonymous, Continued

In response to a totally unrelated article, Anonymous today posted a link to a site which claimed that George Soros is a drug dealer.

Here is a sample of the reasoning in that article:

"Soros has categorically denied receiving money from drug cartels or any form of criminal activity. The fact remains, however, that at least some of his financial operations have been based offshore, in banking and financial centers that are widely reported to be considered conducive to money-laundering."

I.e.  they have no evidence on the face of the earth for this smear.  It is hardly surprising that Soros, who didn't grow up in the U. S. might have financial operations outside our boundaries, like, say, for example, Halliburton, which is a U. S. company which moved its headquarters to a country whose leaders have a long record of supporting Arab terrorism.

Of course, there is a difference between these two examples (other than the fact that Halliburton's former CEO used his government position to rob the nation of billions for the company.)  George Soros is Jewish.

Yes, it's the whole Jewish International Bankers Rule the World thing- the oldest and most boring trick in the right wing book.  Pretty soon Anonymous will be telling us about the baby blood in George Soros' matzot.

Let me be clear, for once, about things like this.  My original post had absolutely nothing to do with George Soros.  When Anonymous took this opportunity to try to expose people to his claims, he has revealed himself to be a filthy, anti-semitic racist scum, a moral degenerate of the lowest order, and very likely a white supremacist neo-Nazi too, once you scrape the thin veneer of decency away.  No wonder he doesn't want us to know his real identity.

Like I said a couple of days ago, I've had a couple of nauseating excuses for human beings like you come here before, Anonymous.  It's not a bad thing, because people need to see what is really going on in this country.  So, thank you for showing your ugly, perverted soul in public.  But just like all the others of your kind, when you get the race war you are after, and when the Crips and the Bloods begin fighting back, you will be running home whining for mama and hiding in the basement with your computer and your lifetime supply of Cheetos.

Is that clear enough for you?

Terrorist Update for Today

And yes, it is getting to be a daily thing.  Nice country we live in here.  Actually, there are two things to report today:

First, someone doesn't like Jerry Brown:

Terrorist threats to murder California Governor Jerry Brown are being taken very seriously by the police.

"Cpl. Anthony Bertagna, spokesman for the Santa Ana Police Department, said one of the messages read, "we gonna kill Gov. Brown 2/14/11."  The other said "27 more days 4 Brown" and included a swastika."

I'm sure we will be reading any day now at right wing blogs how this is the work of liberals too.

And second, today is the start of the murder trial in Tucson of Shawna Forde.  Remember her?

Don't mess with this mama. She is the white supremacist, anti-immigrant racist who led a minuteman group which attacked a house they believed to be inhabited by a Hispanic drug dealer.  Oops, wrong house...however they did succeed in murdering a totally innocent man and his nine year old daughter, in a spectacular example of justice, right wing style.

A couple of remarks from Shawna's fellow racists:

"This is not what Minutemen do," said member Chuck Stonex"

Sorry Chuck...apparently it is.

And this amusing article:

"11 Reasons Why Shawna Forde Can't Get a Fair Trial in Pima County (Tucson)
 1. Pima County is a satellite of Mexico"

Honestly, I don't think we need to cover the other ten reasons.

It is also reported that Shawna has filed a complaint with the ACLU.  You've just got to laugh.

Fred Attacks Ozzie. Fred, You'd Better Hope Ozzie Doesn't Bite Back.

Via TPM (sorry, guys, I couldn't resist,) the latest in the annals of  Fred Phelps and the clowns at the Westboro Baptist Church:

I'm sure Ozzie is petrified with fear over Fred's disapproval.  I hope for Fred's sake that he gets a more respectful response than he did at Comicon last year:

The Violence Never Stops

Today's story- and yes, Poll P, it does seem to be becoming a daily occurrence:

"Police in Arlington, MA this week seized a “large amount” of weapons and ammunition from local businessman Travis Corcoran after he wrote a blog post threatening U.S. lawmakers in the wake of the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ). In a post on his blog (which has since been removed)...Corcoran applauded the shooting of Giffords and justified the assassination of lawmakers because he argued the federal government has grown far beyond its constitutional limits. “It is absolutely, absolutely unacceptable to shoot indiscriminately. Target only politicians and their staff and leave regular citizens alone,” he wrote in the post.

... Corcoran calls himself “an anarcho-capitalist” and while his blog has been taken down, based on his Twitter page, he appears to hold views similar to those of many in the anti-government libertarian wing of the conservative movement, like many tea party activists."

The frequency of this sort of thing is increasing rapidly, and it is unfortunately inevitable that we will see increased incidents in which right wingers succeed in carrying out their threats.  That is bad enough, but what really worries me is how long it will be before we start seeing militia-style mass attacks perpetrated by these people, as they continue to be openly driven to violence by the Glenn Becks and  Sarah Palins out there, and far too many Republican leaders too.   An intolerable situation is being deliberately brewed up in this country, and it is going to carry a very high price tag if it is not stopped.

Anonymous: A Case Study in Conservative Argument

I've devoted a number of posts recently to the motivations behind the conservative fabrication of a totally alternate reality in which their racist, hate-filled, corrupt leaders are paragons of virtue, while those who care about the sick, the poor, the less fortunate are somehow the source of all evil.  I would like to draw on my own recent experience here at Green Eagle to provide a glimpse into how this works among rank and file right wingers, who don't have the likes of Frank Luntz to help them cloak their malignance in superficially acceptable imagery.

I've had several right wingers who have commented with some regularity on my blog.  They have all followed a similar pattern.  The latest just refers to himself (or herself) as Anonymous.  Here are the contents of anonymous' replies to some of my posts over the last couple of weeks:

I posted a piece about a person with strong right wing beliefs who was arrested for threatening to kill a Democratic congressman.  Anonymous replied with the following comment:

"well who should we credit to Sarah Palin getting death threats.
I won't hold my breath.
For one straight week the left ha been smearing the right and when the right defense themselves it' time for discourse. I have an idea let the media bash the left for one week straight and the left keep silent.
The Daily KOS targeted tha Disctrict and the guy was influned by leftist Karl Marx.
Remeber When Eric Cantor got death threats adn his window was shot up? Of course you don't.
Obama was the one who said bring a gun. Looks like he took his advice."

This was accompanied by two articles concerning a bullet which went through a window of an office occasionally used by Republican Representative Eric Cantor.  Amusingly, one of Anonymous' articles made it clear that the bullet was not aimed at Cantor at all, and the other identified the perpetrator, who was a religious fanatic who in no way could be considered a liberal.

Notice that, as always, the claims of endless death threats against Palin were accompanied by no examples linking them to the left in any way.  Anonymous claimed about Jared Loughner that "the guy was influned by leftist Karl Marx."  He failed to mention that based on Loughner's comments, he was equally "influned" by arch-rightist Adolf Hitler and by current wingnut fave Ayn Rand. Anonymous' response to my post was both ignorant and disingenuous.

By the way, Anonymous, Fox News has been bashing the left for ten years straight and that seems fine with you.

In response to a post about another violent right wing threat against a Democrat, Anonymous posted links to two You tube videos.  One accused Obama of being like Hitler, and the other one a grossly racist attack alleging that it is Obama's intent to lead a black movement to destroy the white race, America and the church.

In response to a post about the seeming disinterest in discovering the truth about Loughner's politics, Anonymous linked to this:
In relation to this, he also made the following comment:

"that is shut bullshit you are just upset that your party lost the last election and they are using this tragedy to shut up conservative view points which is the views of most American..."

His response to my story about the arrest of a Republican congressional candidate being arrested for making violent threats against judges and other government officials:

A U-Tube video about a Harvard educated woman who killed three people.  I guess everyone who went to Harvard is a pinko- including George W. Bush.  By the way, there was absolutely nothing political about this killing, which was a retaliation by a person with a long history of violent behavior against people who wouldn't grant her tenure; not that this fact meant anything to Anonymous.

And, an utterly irelevant biography of Lee Harvey Oswald, which Anonymous included, apparently thinking that it made some point about Oswald having been a left winger.  It did not make any such claim.

Finally, Anonymous linked to this cartoon in response to my comment (based on decades of observation of the right) about the utter inconsistency of Republican ideology over time:

An utterly unsubstantiated smear, as a response to what was at least an attempt to find some meaning in Republican behavior.

Well, there you go:  a compendium of racist videos, meaningless, cheap-shot cartoons and barely literate, fuming comments filled with smears for which he offers not a shred of proof.  That's what Anonymous has to offer the American people to help them find their way out of their problems; and in that regard, he is pretty representative of Conservatives and teabaggers in general.

This infantile hatred and abuse is never going to lead our nation to anything positive, and I would think that fact would be clear even to people with the kind of limited political understanding possessed by Anonymous.

P.S. Anonymous:  Of the whole vast internet, this little corner is mine.  I welcome all kinds of comments, but I do not appreciate people like you coming here and polluting it with your violence and hatred.  I know this may be a foreign concept to you, but I try damned hard to make sure I know what I am talking about before I post things.  As with the right wingers who have preceded you, when confronted with facts, you have quickly degenerated into grotesque ugliness.  You're welcome to continue in this vein, because my readers are not as familiar  as I am with the hatred and abuse that pass for political analysis on the right, and I think that it is a good thing for them to see some of it.  But don't expect to be treated with much respect.

And just be thankful that I'm not into criticizing people's grammar.

They Don't Have a Clue

Here's another case where liberals are whooping it up without, apparently, a clue in the world about what is really going on.  From a NBC/Wall Street Journal poll:

"What a difference a few weeks can make.
Last month, Republicans were celebrating their midterm victories; Democrats were licking their electoral wounds; and President Barack Obama’s approval rating was stuck in the mid-'40s.

But after a five-week stretch that included bipartisan legislative achievements in the lame-duck session of Congress, mostly positive economic news and Obama’s well-received speech honoring the victims of the tragic shootings in Arizona, the political world has taken an abrupt turn in direction."

No it hasn't.  In national politics, there is exactly one day every two years when Republicans need to outpoll Democrats: the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November, in national election years.  It costs the corporations that own the Republican party a hell of a lot of money to con the American people into believing that the same party that has wrecked our economy over and over again should be put back into power, and if there's one thing rich people don't like, it's spending money on anyone but themselves.  Well, they bought the votes of the stupid once again last November, and they don't give a God damn what the rest of us think of them until the 2012 election, at which point they will spend whatever it takes to con the gullible again.

That's how electoral politics really works in America today.  Deal with it.

A Comment on the Republican Health Care Vote

As low as my opinion of the mainstream press is, it still depresses me that not one of them seems to be willing to honestly discuss the purpose of the latest cynical Republican abuse of power, the meaningless vote in the House of Representatives today to repeal "Obamacare."

Of course, the Democrats don't help things much.  I saw Dennis Kucinich yesterday on TV, along with one of the Republican' endless supply of interchangeable liars. When the liar kept referring to polls in which people were against Obamacare, Kucinich did not have the sense to point this out: they have the opinions they do because the health insurance companies and the for-profit hospitals spent over $600 million dollars to swindle them into buying a pack of vicious lies about the legislation.  When polled about the actual contents of the bill, the American people were strongly in favor of all of it.

Convincing people to believe what is false is what Republican talk is about.  Of course they know that this vote will get them nowhere.  But it provides them with a public platform and the willing assistance of the press to continue spreading their malignant disinformation, knowing that every day they do, a few more people fall for it.  This is a pattern of behavior which springs from the most contemptible dishonesty, but there you are, that's our Republicans.

Why Do They Lie With Such Abandon?

As I promised a couple of days ago, I am now going to attempt to account for a fact mentioned by Shaw Kenawee in a comment here:

"Many of us, righties and lefties, have documented the deliberate lies and misrepresentations of right-wing bloggers and pundits, but the facts we present seem not to discourage conservative followers from their allegiance to their liars."

Well, for good or ill, here goes my attempt to explain this:

After decades of following right wing rhetoric and actions, I have come to the following conclusion:  American conservatism, at least as it has existed in the last half century, is about one thing and one thing only: greed. Cut my taxes.  That's it.  Nothing else underlies Conservatism.  All they care about in the whole world is keeping their government services but having their taxes cut so someone else picks up the tab.  Everything else is just window dressing.  Even racism is nothing to them but a way to justify taking things away from others so they can have more.

In particular, I believe that their endless protestations of religiosity are utterly insincere.  How could anyone believe that their enabling of the rich, their hatred of other kinds of people, their love of violence, the self-absorption with which they fight to evade their fair share of the cost of a decent society, have anything at all to do with the Lord they claim to cherish?  In fact, it is my belief that their religious posturing is not intended to fool anyone  but themselves.  They need deeply to convince themselves, in the face of their barbarous, self serving behavior, that they are the morally superior ones.  In furtherance of that aim they have constructed a false religion, which has replaced the real values of Jesus, values which demand so much of them, with hatred of gays, denunciation of evolution, fighting against abortion, and a whole host of other issues never mentioned by Jesus, but which have the advantage of demanding absolutely no real sacrifice.

Their political claims are similarly bankrupt.  Who can take seriously people who bark endlessly about the constitution and about State's rights, yet who stood silent as Conservatives on the Supreme Court threw all of that out the window when they made George Bush President?  Where are these people to stand up to the notion of corporate personhood, something never mentioned in the constitution, and that would have seemed absurd to the founding fathers?  No, this too is just talk, designed to cover their only real interest: more money for themselves.

Now, how does this relate to Shaw's question?  I believe that, in the absence of moral compulsion of any kind, conservatives simply say whatever serves to advance their purpose at that particular moment, on that particular issue.  They will claim to believe anything which they can use to justify their behavior, and it means absolutely nothing to them that it has any consistency with what  they claimed to believe in the past or will claim to believe in the future.  All that matters to them is that their statements serve to deflect opposition.   In fact, they are not  presenting a viewpoint at all- language for them is simply a way to defeat opposition to the gratification of their desires.  Seen this way, there is absolutely no reason that their claims should show any consistency, or even rationality.  If their public statements serve to obscure the rational arguments of their opponents, that is enough;  it makes no difference to them if their positions are revealed to have no basis, long after they have gotten what they want.

I know that this is a harsh view.  I suggest that, when confronted with samples of Conservative irrationality, you try to understand them in this light.  I have done so for a number of years, and I have found that it invariably provides a simple and convincing explanation of Conservative doctrine.

The Truth Recognized by Someone

I want to express my gratitude to E. J. Dionne at Politico for writing a piece which I am going to take the liberty of quoting from at some length:

"...in the past week, the question of whether a carefully planned assassination attempt on a member of the United States Congress might have had anything to do with politics has been mocked into oblivion. Well, let’s see. The dominant theme of Loughner’s ravings was suspicion of the government. He apparently didn’t believe in paper money and thought only gold has value. He believed the government was responsible for Sept. 11. And so on. This is not a random collection of nutty opinions. There is a theme to it, and it is not simply that the guy was crazy.
"... we live in a political atmosphere in which nutty views (President Obama isn’t a U.S. citizen.) and alarming rhetoric (“Second Amendment remedies” are the answer to disappointment at the ballot box.) are widespread and often go unrebutted. The suggestion, finally, is that the right is largely responsible for a political atmosphere in which extreme thoughts are more likely to take root and flower.

But all of this is now too uncivil to bring up. So wherever could Loughner have gotten his paranoid contempt for government? Who told him that the government was this hulking, all-powerful “other” determined to control and ruin his life? Official answer: He’s crazy! What more do you need to know?"

Once again, the weak Democrats have been bullied by the threat of endless Republican attacks into denying this guy's obvious right wing bent, and the clear connection between the violent rhetoric which has become a standard tool of Republicans, and acts like this.  It is absolutely clear that Loughner and others like him have been influenced by the deliberate incitement which passes for political dialogue from a party that knows it cannot win the votes of the American people by being honest about its corporatist, everything-for-the-rich agenda.  So it has perfected the art of using the same vicious tone which causes these acts in the first place, to scare off anyone who wants to see the truth told.  And with Democrats, it works.

Incitement

Theodore Roosevelt:

"they cannot, month in month out and year in and year out, make the kind of untruthful, of bitter assault that they have made and not expect that brutal, violent natures, or brutal and violent characters, especially when the brutality is accompanied by a not very strong mind; they cannot expect that such natures will be unaffected by it."

Too bad we don't have any politicians today who are as honest as that.

GOOD RIDDANCE

And don't come back.

But Of Course, It Means Nothing

This in the news today:

"A backpack discovered along the route of the Martin Luther King Jr. march in Spokane contained a bomb "capable of inflicting multiple casualties," the FBI said Tuesday."

Undoubtedly the work of a deranged left winger.

A Little Question For Gun Nuts

We are told constantly by conservatives that the reason they are allowed to own guns is so they can protect themselves against a tyrannical government.  When they take a loaded gun into a bar, or down to the mall, how, exactly, are they protecting themselves against the government?  Do they think the U. S. army is going to come marching in at any second and start a war with the people shopping at Wal-Mart? Do they think a meeting with their congressman is going to end in them all being rounded up and taken to concentration camps?

If protecting themselves against the evil government is the real reason that they need their guns, why do they insist on belligerently strutting around with them in public, which would only make them more identifiable as government targets?

In fact, if they are truthfully explaining their obsession with guns, would it not be the case that appearing with them in public identifies them immediately as being committed to the violent overthrow of the government, and therefore perfectly legitimate targets to be arrested and tried for sedition or treason?

Just wondering.

Interesting Ignorance

In connection with Jared Lee Loughner, I have been talking about the Sovereign Citizen movement.  In a post, I mentioned something called the Nehemiah document, which is the "founding document" of this right wing movement, whose members have been responsible for a number of violent anti-government acts in recent years.

Well, I have certainly never read any more than a couple of excerpts from the Nehemiah document.  I thought it would be interesting to read the entire thing, and did a Google search for it, under its full name, and a number of variants.

I could not find the text of this document anywhere online, but I did find this:

This is page one of my search for the Nehemiah document.  Now, as you can guess from the number of comments my posts get, hardly anyone reads my blog.  And yet, in a week, it managed to make it up to number three on Google.  This tells me something which I think is interesting:  Almost no one in the country cares to learn anything about this group, even though Loughner's utterances strongly suggest he shares their idiotic, belligerent beliefs.

So, the whole nation, including our pathetic press can just ignore the evidence which anyone could find in minutes; and thereby deny that Loughner is in any way connected to the far right.  He can be just written off as a violent madman, by people who have no interest in the truth.  Ignorance can be a wonderful tool in the right hands.

Sean Hannity Calls In the Debt

Sean Hannity today:

"I say why isn’t Iraq paying us back with oil, and paying every American family and their soldiers that lost loved ones or have injured soldiers — and why didn’t they pay for their own liberation?"

Sean, I shouldn't have to remind you of this, but we didn't "liberate" them.  We invaded their country in an unprovoked war of aggression, killed a million of them, destroyed their infrastructure and left them in the hands of a bunch of sectarian religious fanatics.

How much do you think they owe us for that?

An Interesting Insight into Jared Loughner's Motivations

A very interesting post by wingnut expert David Niewert at Crooks and Liars brings up the apparent fact that Jared Lee Loughner was strongly influenced by a pseudo-documentary entitled Zeitgeist.

Along with some religious nonsense and the obligatory 9-11 conspiracy theories, this film features the following (as described by Wikipedia.)

"Part III", entitled Don't Mind the Men Behind the Curtain, argues that three wars of the United States during the twentieth century were waged purely for economic gain by what the film refers to as "international bankers". The film alleges that certain events were engineered as excuses to enter into war including the sinking of the RMS Lusitania, the attack on Pearl Harbor, and the Gulf of Tonkin Incident.

According to the film, the US was forced by the Federal Reserve Bank to become embroiled in these wars, not with a view to win but to sustain the conflict, as this forces the US government to borrow money from the bank, allegedly increasing the profits of the "international bankers". The film then goes on to claim that the Federal Income Tax is illegal.

This section also claims the existence of a secret agreement to merge the United States, Canada and Mexico into a "North American Union". The creation of this North American Union is then alleged to be a step towards the creation of "One World Government." The film speculates that under such a government, every human could be implanted with an RFID chip to monitor individuals and suppress dissent."

In case you aren't aware of this fact, the term "international bankers" is right wing code speak for "rich Jews."

Virtually all of this is entirely consistent with a world view a step or two to the right of Sarah Palin's (at least what she's admitted to in public;) particularly the part about the Federal income tax being illegal, which is a staple of the Sovereign Citizen movement.  As I reported a few days ago, Loughner's comments made me think that he was influenced by this faction, and the above only serves to make it more likely that he is in fact an adherent (in however primitive a fashion- none of these people seems that smart, or they wouldn't fall for this nonsense) of Sovereign Citizen beliefs.  That would make him a classic wingnut, and right in the middle of the sort of people who have produced a continued string of terrorist incidents in the country for quite some time now.

I'll keep my eyes on this as we learn more.  I hope Loughner decides to talk for himself; that would be a great lesson for the country.

One More Story that Means Nothing...Nothing, I Tell You

From the AP

"INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — An Indiana woman who ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Congress last year was being held Saturday on charges she made threats against judges and other officials on her Facebook account...State police arrested her on eight felony counts of intimidation on Thursday, the same day authorities discovered the postings, which were apparently published on her page three days earlier."

If you make it to paragraph 13 of this 14 paragraph story, you will discover that the woman, Cheryl Allen, was (much to everyone's surprise) a Republican.  Above is a picture of Cheryl, if you're interested.

Here's a little sample of Ms. Allen's political thought, from (God, don't you love it?) her Facebook page:

"What do you need to have done to get all the current government out of office? That is why we should own guns to go into court..."

"One day I will have my revenge on your seeking so much revenge on me," read one of the posts cited in media reports....Someday Boooooom while your setting in your offices"

Sounds like a Republican to me.

An Unemployment Proposal

I think that it is long past time that we give up the notion that most of the decent jobs lost in this country are ever coming back.  As far as I am concerned, it has been obvious since at least the 1970's that we were going to eventually end up in this situation, but of course, just as with global warming today, the short term interest of corporations in doing nothing that would cost them a penny has totally trumped the urgent need to address this problem.

Here is at least a partial solution to the unemployment problem which I first thought of way back then.  I think  it is still a good idea.

The traditional 40 hour, five day work week should be decreased to a 32 hour, four day work week, essentially making every weekend a 3-day one.  In return for this 20% decrease in work time, workers would agree to a 10% pay cut.  Those who really needed more money could pick up some weekend work if they had to.

I would enact this proposal in stages.  First, I would see to it that there is a government-mandated 3 day weekend every month; then, in five years, I would go to a 3 day weekend every other week, and finally in another five years, to the four day work week.

There are a number of benefits to this suggestion.  The fact that it would radically decrease unemployment is of course obvious.  However there are other things to be gained:

First of all, as more and more has been squeezed out of American workers in recent decades, a cruel practice lauded in the press as "increased productivity," work for many Americans has become more and more dehumanized.  I believe a significant part of the endemic rage of the American populace stems from this, and I also believe that if something is not done about it, eventually our society is in for a catastrophic social collapse.

And finally, I wish to point out something that I have discussed before.  In his analysis of the runup to the great depression, Arthur Schlesinger pointed out that, in the 1920's worker productivity increased rapidly, but none of the increased profits went to the workers; it was all claimed by business owners as profit.  This was a major factor in creating the vast pool of money in the hands of the rich, that produced the bubbles that resulted in the 1927 real estate collapse and the 1929 stock market crash.  The exact same concentration of wealth has happened again, and as counter-intuitive as it might seem, I believe that it is necessary at this point to decrease worker productivity, in order to preserve our economy in the long run.

Well, that's it.  I can't imagine that too many Americans would be indignant at the idea of three day weekends every week.  Unfortunately, we know who really runs the country, and no matter how disastrous their management has been, their bought-and-paid-for politicians aren't going to take the reins out of their hands.
