Joe's Revenge

From a Newsweek article by Jonathan Alter:

"Senate colleagues say Lieberman is consumed by his resentment toward liberals... For Lieberman, defeating health-care reform would be the fulfillment of a revenge fantasy."

And there you have it- exactly the argument I have been making for several years now. This monumental, colossal egomaniac seethes with fury every day of his life that the Democrats didn't understand that he is the only person qualified to speak for them, and to run the country. Thus, our entire national agenda is held hostage to this one disgusting man's ego and anger.

And let's not forget the icing on the cake: Lieberman's petty, vindictive, self-serving corruption is portrayed by him and his enablers in the beltway press as some sort of high-minded religious fervor. Of course, we get the same papering over of corruption with fake religion regarding so many Republicans, but it is particularly galling to have to own this guy.

I know I like to beat up on Joe, but really, there isn't a more dishonest, corrupt politician in the country today.

Nothing

Has this been a boring few days or what?

Climategate- Part I

We are in the early stages of another grand right wing phony conspiracy- this one with a name and all. It's called Climategate, and in the last few days there have been literally dozens of posts on right wing blogs, and endless nonsense on their talk shows about it. Obviously, it relates to global warming, and the chief global warming denier (i.e. corrupt corporate stooge) in Congress, James Inhofe, is already promising "investigations."

I hate dealing with this kind of synthetic, lying crap, but this is a textbook example of the way the right generates noise to prevent actions being taken which might hurt their corporate masters, and it is something with which Ihave some familiarity, having been involved in environmental issues since serving as a regional organizer of the first earth day, so I am going to force myself to tackle it. I want to do this in a couple of parts, to avoid a tediously long post. Today, I want to briefly describe the alleged story of this pseudoscandal, and then just remind people about some of the facts of global warming.

The story, as first "reported" in the Moonie-financed Washington Times, modestly titled "EDITORIAL: Hiding evidence of global cooling," involves something like 26,000 e-mails from the last two decades, hacked from the English Climate Research Unit at the University of East Anglia. Against my normal practice, I am linking to the article here, in case you desire to waste your time reading it. In two or three of these e-mails, cumsy wording can be taken out of context to support some sort of dubious claim that climate scientists invented the notion of global warming, for some unknown reason.

A consideration of the e-mails will make up the next part of this series. For now, I wish to make a couple of observations. First, someone could come up with an e-mail from Isaac Newton stating that his writing on gravity was a big joke. That wouldn't make things fall up. In science, the evidence is what counts. Nothing else has any relevance.

Now, lets remember a little about man-made global warming. In 2004, the magazine Nature published an analysis of all of the peer reviewed papers that had been written on the subject. It found over 700 articles. There was not a single one that disagreed with the notion that global warming was real, or the notion that it was at least in part caused by man-made forces. In fact, at that time, every supposedly scientific article that opposed these two notions emanated from a single source- an organization called the Competitive Enterprise Institute, which was funded largely by oil companies. Let me be blunt- these papers which disputed the plain facts about global warming were corporate lies, designed to protect profits.

Now, here are a few of the most recent scientific findings on climate change, from this report:

"Global carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels in 2008 were nearly 40% higher than those in 1990.

Over the past 25 years temperatures have increased at a rate of 0.190C per decade, in every good agreement with predictions based on greenhouse gas increases.

A wide array of satellite and ice measurements now demonstrate beyond doubt that both the Greenland and Antarctic ice-sheets are losing mass at an increasing rate.

Summer-time melting of Arctic sea-ice has accelerated far beyond the expectations of climate models.

Satellites show great global average sea-level rise (3.4 mm/yr over the past 15 years) to be 80% above past IPCC predictions."

Sad to say, there is plenty more. The issue here is simply that of the truth versus corporate greed and lies. There is no real question about the existence and danger of man-made global warming.

In my next post on this subject, I will look at the supposed "evidence" in the climategate "scandal." As you might expect, it will turn out to be just more lies, smears and distortions, like every argument conservatives have to make about everything.

Grand Foreign Policy Strategy

This trenchant observation, from the ever-thoughtful Erick Erickson at Red State:

"With President Obama having concluded his trip through one of the fastest-dying regions of the planet, complete with literal prostrations to a symbolic Emperor and metaphorical prostrations to an Emperor in all but name, this is as good a time as any to ask whether his Administration has developed a coherent foreign policy grand strategy yet."

A "coherent grand strategy." You mean, like, waste three trillion dollars in useless aggression, make the whole world hate us, fill eight years with impotent, belligerent blather, and at the same time cozy up to the people (Saudi Arabia and Pakistan) who are really financing our enemies? Now that's a grand strategy, right, Erick?

And it worked out so well.

Short Mermory, or What?

Dana Perino, former Bush press secretary, on Fox News yesterday:

"We did not have a terrorist attack on our country during President Bush's term"

I guess they think they can lie their way out of anything.

And with our "liberal press" helping them every step of the way, maybe they can.

Your Liberal Press At Work

William McGurn, from the Wall Street Journal today:

"Conservatives and Republicans rattle off any number of objections to the bill: It would bust the budget; it would force many families to replace private coverage with government; it would subsidize abortion; it would ration care, etc. These are all variations on the major argument: It's not going to work.

None of this really persuades Democrats, because they see it differently."

No, Mr. McGurn. As you well know, none of this persuades Democrats, because it is a pack of lies. You guys just love to listen to lies. We don't.

How's that for the real explanation?

Paying their Share

This just in:

" Dec. 16 (Bloomberg) -- Goldman Sachs Group Inc., which got $10 billion and debt guarantees from the U.S. government in October, expects to pay $14 million in taxes worldwide for 2008 compared with $6 billion in 2007.

The company’s effective income tax rate dropped to 1 percent from 34.1 percent, New York-based Goldman Sachs said today in a statement."

Just sayin'.

Still a Total Dick

Adding out and out corruption to a long history of lies, hypocrisy and nauseating proclamations of his religious superiority.

You know who I mean- It's not an accident that the first three letters of his name are L-I-E.

Psalm 109 And The Good Will of Conservatives

There has been some attention the last few days to items such as the following t-shirt, being sold around the right wing world. This is a perfect example of something known as a "dog-whistle" statement- that is, something whose real meaning can only be understood by the (usually right wing Christian) insiders, while it seems totally innocuous to everyone else.

What does Verse 8 of Psalm 109 say?

" Let his days be few;
and let another take his office."

Thus, hidden behind a seemingly positive message of reconciliation with Obama, is actually a call for his death. These are truly religious people, huh, following in the footsteps of their savior by hiding their true intent from the world. Just like him, huh?

I don't think I need to add my voice to the people pointing out how contemptible this is, but I would like to use this phenomenon to point out how truly ignorant of, and unconcerned with, their supposed sacred text these disgusting people really are. Here is the start of this psalm, which I assume these people ignored:

"1 Hold not thy peace, O God of my praise;
2 for the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of the deceitful are opened against me:
they have spoken against me with a lying tongue.
3 They compassed me about also with words of hatred;
and fought against me without a cause."

Sort of amusing, huh?

A Note:

Green Eagle found himself unexpectedly spending a week in a place with no internet connectivity. He's back now, and meaner than ever.

A Little Photoshop Fun, What the Hell.

Someone Let Green Eagle loose on the computer again, and the naughty bird has been having his way with it.

First up, I saw this bumper sticker for sale on a wingnut website the other day:

Here's another one that I thought they could sell, which should also be popular among their followers:

What do you think? It's brief and to the point, and I believe it's something they ought to consider.

Now, my next delight comes as a result of the news that former CNN racist jackass Lou Dobbs may be planning to run for president. Knowing how much it costs to run for President, and feeling fairly certain that large donors are not going to be casting wads of money at his feet, Green Eagle thought he would help poor Lou out, with some campaign assistance in the form of a poster, designed to epitomize the nature of his campaign. Pretty much sums it up, huh?

Wingnut Wrapup

Here we go:

Pam Geller, Atlas Shrugs: "Obama kisses the bloody fists of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed"

By putting him on trial for mass murder. Not really a kiss I'd like to get, but maybe Pam is just a lot more horny than I am.

Erick Erickson, Red State: "Newsweek is declaring war on Sarah Palin. The magazine that has given up all pretense of objective news coverage and now caters to an ever shrinking Upper West Side Elite is making Palin the cover of Newsweek (PDF)...Does This Mean Newsweek Stands in For the Nazis?"

Erick, Erick, Erick...Really. Putting her on the cover of their magazine is not really like shipping her off to a death camp. I would have thought that even you could see that. Guess not, huh?

World Net Daily: "Send Chuck Norris to the troops for Christmas"

Great idea. One way ticket only, I hope.

Joseph Farah, World Net Daily: "So where is the birth certificate? ... Petition signups are stagnant. Contributions to the billboard campaign are down. Sales of our documentary, "A Question of Eligibility," the primer for understanding this issue, are down significantly. Do you get the picture? It's time to step up the pressure, not back off. I can't carry this burden alone."

I'm sorry that you are so disappointed, but at least you're not carrying the burden alone, Joseph. You still have Orly.

Yerevad Kochar, American "Thinker": "While interviewing people on the streets of L.A. and N.Y. for a documentary about the Civil War, we came to the staggering realization of how many people assumed that Abraham Lincoln was a Democrat"

Wonder why that is, Yerevad? Think about it. Maybe the reason will dawn on you.

Kevin McCullough, Town Hall: "NYC to Obama: No You Won't"

A great two page article about how upset New Yorkers are about Obama's decision to try Khalid Sheik Muhammad in New York. Really, only one thing could have made it any better. That would have been if he had quoted a single New Yorker who agreed with him. Yup, despite the headline, the article was really about Kevin saying "No You Won't." He apparently couldn't find a New Yorker to support him. I guess New Yorkers just aren't the bunch of whining crybabies that you are, Kevin.

Didn't stop him, though, did it?

Pam Geller, Atlas Shrugs: "Muslims Riot Across France"

After a soccer game. Next time Manchester United loses, I am sure Pam is going to treat us to an article titled "Anglicans Riot Across England."

Clarice Feldman, Pajamas Media: "Khalid Sheikh Mohammed Trial Will Be a Three-Ring Circus"

Oh boy! Will there be elephants? Can I have some cotton candy?

World Net Daily: "Obama revives talk of U.N. gun control"

No he doesn't, of course. But that didn't stop World Net Daily from making it their lead story today. You go there, guys.

Astute Bloggers: "OBAMA'S TREATMENT OF 9/11 AS A CRIMINAL ISSUE RATHER THAN AN ACT OF WAR SHOULD BE CONSIDERED TREASON"

A new low in the standard for what should be considered treason. Try reading the constitution some time, Astute guys. It states pretty clearly what treason is, and it doesn't include "putting people on trial for murder." By the way, I know it would cut into your cheeto budget, but do you think you could get a new keyboard that didn't have a broken caps lock key?

And now some awards: First, the award for the most pathetic scandal attempt of the day:

Astute Bloggers: " WHAT IS IT ABOUT THOSE CHAIRS?
ARE THEY "BLACK POWER CHAIRS"?
AND WHO'S THE "UNCLE TOM" WITH MICHELLE?
AND WHERE'S HER SPEAR?"

Yes, it's a major scandal that Michelle Obama once, long ago (judging from the photo) sat in the same kind of chair that Huey Newton once sat in. A "Black Power Chair." That should be enough to charge her with treason too, right?

And finally, in my favorite category, the Grand Award for Projecting Our Failures on Others:

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit: "Liz Cheney: Whoever Leads GOP in 2012 Will Have to Undo the Damage From Obama’s Disastrous Policies"

You gotta laugh.

A Great Moment in Right Wing Lies

Here is something I rarely do: I am going to reprint a right wing blog post in its entirety. It is from a not particularly extreme blog I check out daily, and no, I will not identify it or link to it. You'll just have to trust me on this one:

"LEFTISTS ANNOUNCE KHALID SHEIKH MOHAMMED DEFENSE FUND
They've just started a KSM Defense Fund.

After all, KSM was "arrested" without a search warrant, he was not read his Miranda rights, and his "confessions" were only a result of torutre.

He's just a garden-variety Muslim arrested for being anti-Bushitlerhaliburtoncheneymcchimpy.

Honorary Chairs for the event:

Sean Penn, Oliver Stone, Danny Clover, Susan Sarandon and Rosie O'Donnell.

The event is co-sponsored by the CCR, the ACLU, CODE PINK, J-STREET, ACORN, the SEIU and the Democratic National Committee.

Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Hugo Chavez, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Dr. Zawahiri and Shekih Osama Bin Laden will address the crowd via satellite.

With a special written appeal by KSM HIMSELF!

All proceeds to benefit the KSM Defense Fund and to pay for his defense by Ramsey Clark, Lynn Stewart, and Eric Holder.

They will prove that 9/11 was an inside job.

This is why Obama is dithering in Afghanistan: the real criminals are in Crawford!"

Yes, if you made it this far, you read that right. Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, the ACLU, ACORN, the SEIU and the Democratic National Committee are joining together with Osama Bin Laden to try to free Khalid Sheik Mohammad. I reprinted this in its entirety so you can see that there is not one shred of an indication that this story is not true, and not one clue that its authors see it as some kind of satire. I will stick my neck out so far as to assert with utter confidence that the purpose of this article, and others like it, is to fool as many of the ignorant as possible, while maintaining some ground to claim that it was just a joke if it gets any attention.

There you go. Is there any lie too big for them to tell?

David Broder- Where Did This Guy Come From?

The "Dean of our National Press Corps," providing us with one more example of why our country is so totally screwed:

"It is evident from the length of this deliberative process and from the flood of leaks that have emerged from Kabul and Washington that the perfect course of action does not exist. Given that reality, the urgent necessity is to make a decision -- whether or not it is right."

Can anyone really be this stupid? Or is Broder lending his voice to the demands that Obama cave in and do what the wingnuts and neocons want, even though they know it will only lead to further disaster?

"The cost of indecision is growing every day."

Really, David? How? And how does that cost compare to the cost of doing the wrong thing? I'm thinking Iraq here. And Katrina. And turning the economy over to Wall Street thieves. And allowing our health care to become secondary to the profit of a few hundred CEO's.

What in God's name do you think the cost of making the wrong decision is, David? Or are you so invested in Obama's failure, as a sort of victory for your beloved, if nonexistent "bipartisanship," that you will do everything you can to force him to fail?

Cowards on the Right

Glenn Greenwald hits the nail on the head, with his comments about the right's panic at the idea of bringing Khalid Sheik Muhammad to New York for his trial:

"As always, the Right's tough-guy leaders wallow in a combination of pitiful fear and cynical manipulation of the fear of their followers. Indeed, it's hard to find any group of people on the globe who exude this sort of weakness and fear more than the American Right.

It is, however, noteworthy that the position they advocate -- it's too scary to have normal trials in our country of Terrorists -- is as pure a surrender to the Terrorists as it gets."

Not much more to say, is there?

How Long Will This Take?

I see that the guy who shot the soldiers at Fort Hood seems to be paralyzed from the waist down, due to being shot by the people who apprehended him.

Any predictions about how long it will be before we hear phony wingnut stories about how left-wingers are protesting this as an act of police brutality?

I'm guessing Pam Geller, tomorrow. Let's see.

A Little 9/11 Truth

I don't remember ever linking to a book review before, but this one, from Jacob Heilbrunn at the New York Times, is such a great summary of facts that I urgently recommend it to you. As so often, I was led to it via Atrios. It concerns the truth about the Bush Administration's catastrophic response to the 9/11 attacks:

"Preoccupied with building a costly missile defense system to counter a spurious menace from Russia and with maintaining “full spectrum dominance” over the rest of the globe, most Bush administration officials blithely ignored the danger emanating from the caves of Afghanistan, where Osama Bin Laden and his acolytes plotted against America. Confronted by a small group of mostly Saudi nationals armed with box cutters, the central nervous system of the country’s defense agencies went into a state of cataleptic shock...

...efforts to reconstruct the tragedy itself were, at best, resented and, at worst, impeded by the sprawling defense bureaucracy and the Bush administration, both of which had much to hide.

Perhaps nothing perturbs Farmer more than the contention that high-ranking officials responded quickly and effectively to the revelation that Qaeda attacks were taking place. Nothing, Farmer indicates, could be further from the truth...

...both Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz and Vice President Dick Cheney, Farmer says, provided palpably false versions that touted the military’s readiness to shoot down United 93 before it could hit Washington.

Farmer scrutinizes F.A.A. and Norad records to provide irrefragable evidence that a day after a Sept. 17 White House briefing, both agencies suddenly altered their chronologies to produce a coherent timeline and story that “fit together nicely with the account provided publicly by Deputy Defense Secretary Wolfowitz and Vice President Cheney.”

Go read it all. It's well worth it, and I suspect the book is too. It is vital that we see that the truth of this sorry chapter in our history, brought to you by the Republican party, is not forgotten, and that we do not allow conservatives to overwrite the truth of their despicable performance the way they did with the Vietnam war, or the criminal and treasonous behavior of their great Saint Ronald Reagan. We have paid a terrible price for the unwillingness of Democrats to stand up to Republican abuse and state the simple truth about our recent history. I, for one, am not willing to let it happen again.

Wingnut Wrapup

Again I want to point out that it has taken me two days to compile what would have been a mediocre single day's output of wingnut garbage just a few months ago. I don't mention this as a joke. A lot of what is going to happen in the next few years seems to depend on how long these people can maintain their ignorant rage. Right now, there are some good signs that they are losing the battle, but it sure doesn't take much to get them started again.

Kevin Fobbs, Renew America: "Magic Mirror on the Wall, who is the fairest one of all?" was uttered by the wicked Queen in the 1937 Walt Disney animated movie 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The question which many have speculated over was whether or not this movie's focus on the dark side of magic acted perhaps as a springboard for reliance on other-world forces to forecast the truth? Or was the future set into motion by a reliance to turn away from faith and God and toward occult or then ever-growing spiritualist movement?"

Yes, serious speculation about the overwhelming, earth destroying evil which has emanated from a Disney Cartoon. Heaven help us if Kevin ever finds out about Rocky and Bullwinkle.

Steve Kellmeyer, Renew America: "Why the left loves Islam- On the surface, it seems a great mystery. Why would the leftist liberals who embrace abortion, homosexual rights, pornography, free love, sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll find Islam so endearing?"

Steve, maybe they don't love Islam. Maybe that's just one more slimy racist lie that you guys made up all by yourselves. When you look at it that way, it all starts to make sense, doesn't it?

In fact, given that you are the guys who hate abortion, homosexual rights, pornography, free love, sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll, and all the other things radical Muslims hate, maybe you are the ones that are really like Al Qaida and the Iranian Shiites. I'm putting my money on that one.

Renew America: "Liberal media 'whitewashed' evils of communism, new study documents"

A new study by Brent Bozell, who brought us half of the ugly Republican smears of the last couple of decades. I wonder what they mean by the word "study," anyway.

Chuck Baldwin, Renew America: "Look at the heroes of liberal historians and who do you find? Abraham Lincoln, Woodrow Wilson, and Franklin Roosevelt. Not by accident, these same historians will extol the virtues of Hammurabi, Alexander, Julius Caesar, Charlemagne, and Napoleon. All these men have one thing in common: they were responsible for expanding (either by force or fraud) a centralized government."

What? The same people who like FDR like Julius Caesar and Napoleon? And I love the idea that Hammurabi was a big government liberal. How stupid do they think people are?

Oh, wait- they're talking to the teabaggers. I get it now.

So here's a big issue on the right today- the decision to actually give Khalid Sheik Mohammed a trial. I could have provided you with dozens of specimens of wingnut lunacy on this issue. I decided to stop with three:

James Gaylean, Red State: "The Criminal Justice System Is Not The Proper Place To Determine Khalid Sheikh Mohammed’s Fate"

No, but apparently a torture chamber, where he was waterboarded 160 times, is. Real American thinking there, James. But you still have a long way to go to catch up to the real masters:

Erick Erickson, Red State: "What do Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, mastermind of the September 11th terrorist attacks, and uninsured 20 year olds have in common? In Barack Obama’s America, they both go to jail — but the terrorist has to be convicted first."

Okay. Let's get the little part of this out of the way first. Of course the thing about the uninsured 20 year old going to jail is a lie. That goes without saying. Now, on to the other part. Erick, maybe this has escaped your attention, but Khalid Sheik Mohammed was captured in March, 2003. He's been in our custody ever since- six and a half years. In what sense did he have to be "convicted first" before we put him in jail?

Let me answer that question myself: In no sense. Not surprising, but both halves of Erick's comparison were lies.

Pam the Stupid, Atlas Shrugs: "Obama Reduces September 11th Act of War on America to a Law Enforcement Issue"

Whereas you guys are much happier to keep it as a matter of torture and revenge. I'll stick with law enforcement.

Alan Keyes, World Net Daily: "Do we Americans still care to be free?"

Probably not if it involves having to listen to you, Alan. But thanks for asking.

The Toll of Tolerance

As if we needed any more evidence of what a clueless, malicious idiot Charles Krauthammer is, here's a little quote from his Washington Post column today, pointed out by Steve M. at No More Mr. Nice Blog:

"Have we totally lost our moral bearings? Nidal Hasan (allegedly) cold-bloodedly killed 13 innocent people. His business card had his name, his profession, his medical degrees and his occupational identity. U.S. Army? No. "SoA" -- Soldier of Allah. In such cases, political correctness is not just an abomination. It's a danger, clear and present. "

For the benefit of Mr. Krauthammer, and all of the other malicious hatemongers that we are forced to listen to every day, I present the following scorecard:

Price of being too tolerant of Muslims: 13 dead American Soldiers

Price of indulging in our mindless hatred of Muslims: 5,000 dead American soldiers and half a million dead Iraqi civilians.

Even a dimwitted habitual liar like Krauthammer should be able to add that one up.

A Shining Example

With great pleasure, I link to this story in the Los Angeles Times this morning, about an American company that is thriving in world competition, through the apparently bizarre combination of insisting on maintaining high quality and turning out products that consumers around the world actually want. It all seems so simple, doesn't it?

Below, one of their products, made in 1968 (like the one I bought in a pawn shop long ago) and formerly owned by someone named Hendrix.

Bye, Lou

Breaking News from the world of Pseudo-Journalism, from the New York Times:

"Lou Dobbs, the longtime CNN anchor whose anti-immigration views have made him a TV lightning rod, said Wednesday that he is leaving the cable news channel effective immediately."

What a loss, huh? For those of you who don't speak media language, in this case, the term "lightning rod" can be roughly translated as "lying racist prick."

“I’m considering a number of options and directions,” Mr. Dobbs added. "

Want to take a guess how many of those "options" involve Fox News?

"CNN indicated that it would name a replacement for Mr. Dobbs on Thursday morning."

I hear that Gollum is available.

"Mr. Dobbs met with Roger Ailes, the chairman of the Fox News Channel, in September. At the time Mr. Dobbs was viewed as a potential hire for the Fox Business Network. But a Fox spokesperson said Wednesday, “We have not had any discussions with Lou Dobbs for Fox News or Fox Business.”

No discussions with Dobbs. Well, then, I must be wrong. After all, if the information came from Fox News, it must be true, right?

Well, good luck, Lou, wherever you end up. I'm sure it will be much more comfy, one rung closer to Hell.

Wingnut Wrapup

A few treats, just to remind ourselves that, even though they've lost their moxie these days, they still haven't lost the stupid:

Town Hall: "With memories of NY-23 fresh in the minds of conservative activists, the fight over California’s GOP Senate nominee to potentially unseat Barbara Boxer has turned into a game of “who is conservative enough?”

You go, Republicans. We over here on the left love good news. Maybe David Duke is still available.

John Stossel, Town Hall: "The U.S. House of Presumptuous Meddlers"

i.e. The U.S. House of People who Pass Legislation. Wake up, John- that's their job. Of course, I don't remember you referring to the last Republican congress, when they were working as fast as they could to ruin the economy, as presumptuous meddlers. Funny, that.

David Solway, Pajamas Media: "Bush Is a Liar, Obama Is a Savior: The Rhetoric of Propaganda"

The rhetoric of truth, David. Stuff that in your fat, stupid mouth.

Rick Moran, Pajamas Media: "Should the GOP Help the Democrats Govern?"

Oh, no! Why would they ever do that? Why don't they help the Pakistanis and the Chinese and the Taliban instead? What would ever make you think that the opposition party has a responsibility to help govern? Far better for them to try to wreck the country, like they are doing now. Thanks for setting things straight on that issue, Rick.

Robin of Berkeley, American Thinker: "When Our Military is Attacked, Obama is a Nowhere Man"

First, Robin, our military wasn't attacked. Several members of it were murdered by a lunatic, whatever his motive. That is a crime, not an act of war. Now, the President was with the families of the victims. Apparently, to you, that is "nowhere." Shows what you really think of the military.

Ed Lasky, American Thinker: "Now the GOP are sexist pigs"

Now? NOW? As far as I can remember, they were always sexist pigs. It's sort of a GOP thing.

Stephen Spruiell, National Review Online: "Unholy Union- Why is SEIU boss Andrew Stern the White House’s most frequent visitor?"

What, you liked it better when it was the Friends of Jack Abramoff?

And now on to award time. First the finalists for the minuscule certificate for "Synthetic Scandal Least Likely to Take Hold:"

World Net Daily: "Dark secrets of AARP finally exposed to light"

Carol Gould, Pajamas Media: "Why Do So Few Immigrants Wear Poppies for UK's Remembrance Day?"

And now, the nominees for the Grand Award for Projecting Our Failings On Others:

Dick Morris, Town Hall: "The Myth of the Moderate Democrat"

Ben Shapiro, Town Hall: "There's nothing more offensive to the memory of those who die while serving our country than using them as props for a nonassociated political cause. Yet that is precisely what both the Army and our president have done repeatedly since the terrorist massacre of 13 American troops at Fort Hood."

No comment needed. Winners will be announced...probably never. Who cares. See you soon.

You Go, Conservative Guys- Right to Oblivion

A couple of pieces of Republican news:

From the Washington Post:

"(Dede) Scozzafava, who was stripped of her Republican leadership position in the New York State Assembly on Monday, says she has no regrets and even leaves open the possibility of running for the seat again as a Republican. She sees herself as a champion of local expertise over ideological purity.

"How can Sarah Palin come out and endorse someone who can't answer some basic questions," Scozzafava asked. "Do these people even know who they are endorsing?"

Those conservative forces now descend on Florida, where former House speaker Marco Rubio, who on Monday received the endorsement of the Club for Growth, might shove aside centrist Gov. Charlie Crist, who was once on John McCain's short list for running mate."

And this, from Talking Points Memo:

"A new survey of Maine from Public Policy Polling (D) has some dire news for Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-ME), with the moderate Republican potentially losing her 2012 Republican primary against a generic conservative challenger -- and by a landslide, no less. The numbers: Conservative challenger 59%, Snowe 31%, with a ±4.8% margin of error."

With identification with the Republican party having trouble staying above 20% these days- the worst political party numbers in history- there is nothing that should gladden the hearts of Democrats like this kind of news. It makes me so hopeful for the future of our country that these malignant idiots are still passionately embracing the strategy that is reducing them to an irrelevant pack of lunatics. Keep waving your Dachau posters, and shouting about Hitler and Communism, Republicans. And keep kicking out anyone who disagrees with you on any issue. Soon, you will be able to hold your convention in an airport bathroom.

In the long run, nothing could do us more good.

Update: This, via Atrios:

"CHARLESTON, S.C. - Republican leaders in a South Carolina county have censured their own U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham for working with Democrats on a climate bill and other legislation."

Eat your own, guys. The rest of us have no use for them.

Digby Says It

Another example of what you are missing if you don't read Digby every day, as I have for years:

"...according to (N. Y. Times moron- clarification GE's) Nagourney the Democrats are boldly defying their base in spite of their fear they will desert them as Bush's did. Except, I don't think Bush's base actually deserted him, did it? Sure, today you can't find a hard core Republican who will admit to ever supporting Bush, but that doesn't make it true now does it? In fact, the base stuck with him through every thing he did, the spending, the wars, the malfeasance, the torture, all of it. They worshipped him like a God for years. Only after the fact has the base purged Bush, using a recently discovered "liberalism" to explain his catastrophic failure. It's the only way they can understand their world. "

The most truth in the fewest words- Digby's specialty.

The only disagreement I have with her is the conclusion that this is the only way they can understand their world. I would have said that it's the only way they can lie their way out of the predictable consequences of their behavior, like five year olds claiming that the cookie jar got on the kitchen floor all by itself.

Pat Robertson Speaks His Mind

That great man of religion (oh yes, and collaborator with the worst African dictators)Pat Robertson yesterday, on the TV network that we have stupidly allowed him to own ( from Dave Niewert at Crooks and Liars:)

"...if we don't stop covering up what Islam is -- Islam is a violent -- I was gonna say religion, but it's not a religion, it's a political system, a violent political system bent on the overthrow of the governments of the world and -- and -- and world domination. That is the ultimate aim.

And they talk about infidels and all this -- but the truth is, that's what the game is. So you're dealing with a -- not a religion, you're dealing with a political system.

And I think we should treat it as such, and treat its adherents as such, as we would members of the Communist Party or members of some fascist group."

Niewert is absolutely correct in what he has to say about this contemptible specimen of hatred; I have more to add (as usual.)

So, Islam is not a religion. Maybe its adherents aren't even human beings, huh Pat? And as for being bent on the overthrow of governments of the world, and world domination, remember the crusades, do you? Or what about your fellow "Christians" in this country (including yourself) who look forward to a nation governed by their own personal delusions about what the Bible says? That's not the same, is it? After all, it's okay when you spread hate and violence, because God is on your side, right?

Now, on to your comment about treating Muslims as we would members of the Communist party. Exactly how? The last I heard, it's perfectly legal to be a member of the Communist party in this country, Pat. It never got anyone anywhere, but you are still allowed to believe what you want in America. So, what are you proposing, exactly? Maybe we should liquidate Muslims and Communists? That's what your comment sounds like to me. Is that what you are advocating? That you personally, because of your claim that they threaten people like you, have the right to eliminate whole segments of the world's population? We've heard enough talk lately about Hitler, but this notion is truly and literally Hitlerian.

Now let me have done with this evil nonsense already. When Pat talks about "a violent political system bent on the overthrow of the governments of the world and -- and -- and world domination" and " members of some fascist group" he is exactly describing himself and his fellow right wing "Christians." The threat to this country comes from them, and the hatred they live by, not from the billions of peaceful Muslims that he would casually destroy, given the chance.

Two Easy Solutions

Bob Herbert, in today's New York Times (I saw this quote first at Daily Kos:)

"Reforming the chaotic and unfair health care system in the U.S. is an important issue. But in terms of pressing national priorities, the most important are the need to find solutions to a catastrophic employment environment that is devastating American families and to end the folly of an 8-year-old war that is both extremely debilitating and ultimately unwinnable."

Pretty much right. Here is my solution:

Obama needs to use whatever force he has to see to it that economic improvements go into increasing the number of jobs instead of enriching the same people who got us into this mess. Devastating the pay of Wall Street types until the rest of us see some gains would be a great symbolic move, but more importantly, we must see that, as things improve, the money goes into hiring and not improvements in "productivity." How many more jobs would we have already if the 9% growth in productivity last quarter had gone into rehiring? Instead, it went right into the pockets of the rich.

Now, Afghanistan. Democrats need to begin (should have begun long ago) a consistent and truthful campaign to explain to the American people exactly how the present disasters in Afghanistan and Iraq are totally the product of going to war based on right wing cant and bluster, mixed with traditional conservative incompetence at anything but propaganda. The only danger involved in doing what needs to be done in Afghanistan (giving up on a hopeless war) is the damage done to the country by another decade or two of belligerent right wing lies and blame-casting. It is long past time that Democrats can afford to sit still for this sort of thing, in case you haven't noticed. The truth will set us all free, and by the way, it costs a lot less than fighting a long-lost war.

Wingnut Wrapup- PelosiCare Edition

A good crop of lies today, as I thought there might be after the right's stunning loss in the House last night. Forgive me if I'm not so casual about some of it. Conservatives are not good losers, and it shows:

Little Pammy Geller, Atlas Shrugs: "The depraved and degenerate Democrat party is using the "distraction" of the biggest terror attack on a US military base in history to ram through healthcare today. Nazi Pelosi is the poster girl for this century's national socialism."

Madness, how do I count thy ways? After a ten month fight, the Dems had the vote when they did, because the whole country was obsessed by a mass murder. First, false. Second, maybe you guys should keep your eyes on the important stuff, instead of constantly looking for a new excuse to spew out your racism, huh?

And finally, an extra star, Pammy, for getting the Hitler thing in there again.

Pajamas Media: "Yesterday, in the dead of night, the U.S. House of Representatives took a small step for Nancy Pelosi and a giant step for despotism."

"The dead of night!!!!" On national TV, of course. Get a life, Pajamas guys.

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit: "Pelosicare price controls will bankrupt health insurers in one year."

Oh God, if only that were true. Maybe it would stop the next bunch of business criminals from trying to steal us blind.

Sher Zieve, Renew America: "Pelosi ObamaCare passage: Marxists on way to controlling all of us"

Oh Sher, you're so cute with your Marxism thing. You just never give up, do you? You know where you are going wrong? Study Pammy- you need to mix a little more Hitler in there.

And on to the rest:

Salina Zeto, Town Hall: "Much will be said in the coming weeks about Sarah Palin and the Republican Party-- especially after the Democratic "upset" in the Congressional race in New York’s 23rd District"

When the Democrats win a seat they have not held for 140 years, it's not an upset, it's only an "upset." How could that be? Let's turn to the experts:

Erik Florack, Pajamas Media: "Lesson from NY-23: Of Course Conservatives Can Win- Had the Republicans actually gotten behind Doug Hoffman from the start, there's no question he could have won."

Erik, Republicans could have won in that district if they got behind Snuffy the Dancing Bear. They didn't get behind your lunatic. Think it over- maybe you'll figure it out.

Rush Limbaugh: "The huge story of New York-23 is the shambles the Republican Party made of it. They nominated a horrendous candidate: A liberal Republican. She was far more liberal than this Owens guy, who ended up winning."

I see, Rush. Democrats winning was actually a victory for the right. Back on the Hillbilly Heroin again, I guess.

More Little Pammy: "Bush our Proxy President: Bush at Fort Hood, Obama at Camp David"

Our "proxy president." Because he didn't do enough damage when he was the real president?

And now for some award winning commentary. First, the award for the most sickening smear of the day:

Confederate Yankee: "Liberals Finally Got the Military Murders They've Been Asking For

Disdain for the military is a constant theme on the political left, a group that has consistently portrayed soldiers as violent psychopaths and babykillers for far longer than I've been alive. I've noted images of progressive protesters carrying signs attacking the troops on numerous occasions.

These same liberals must have been thrilled yesterday afternoon to discover that an officer opened fire on our troops. It's time for them to break out their magic markers and pen new signs to praise Major Nidal Malik Hasan for doing what they've asked.

So what say you, progressives... was the massacre of American soldiers all you dreamed it might be?"

Tasty, huh? Next, the "Don't Get the Concept" award, to a perpetual candidate in this category:

Frank Gaffney, Newsmax: "As Fort Hood Tragedy Unfolds, Obama Is Politician in Chief"

Frank, that's what the president is. What did you expect him to do, grab his six-shooter and blast it out with the guy personally? I mean, that's what your "proxy president" Bush would have done, right? In his dreams, while he hid under his desk.

And now, the Gratuitous Hatred Certificate:

Russ J. Allen, Renew America: "We need to be "troubled" at the probability that there won't be a backlash against Muslims. Our political correctness will be the ruination of our country."

And the coveted Medal for Delusion Above and Beyond the Call of Duty:

James V. DeLong, Pajamas Media: "The frenetic hostility to Sarah Palin, even by many on the Republican side, is unnerving, because her qualifications to be president are objectively better than those of almost anyone who has been on the national ticket over the past decade."

Or maybe the last thousand years. Her "qualifications" being big breasts, ignorance, contempt for personal responsibility, greed and hatred.

Now, the very small cup for stupidest conspiracy theory of the day:

Breaking! World Net Daily Exclusive: "U.S. troops' continental insignia bears U.N. colors"

And finally, Green Eagle's favorite, the Grand Trophy for Projecting Our Own Behavior Onto Others:

Douglass K. Daniel, Town Hall: "GOP officials say Dems put agenda ahead of country"

"Democrats just don't get the election message from voters and are pushing a liberal, big government agenda at their party's peril, Republican officials said Sunday as they predicted a political price after the majority's victory on health care."

There you go. What a treat, huh?

Jerkwatch, Still With Us

From Gateway Pundit:

"Joe Lieberman Bashes House Bill… Will Not Allow Similar Bill to Come to Final Vote in Senate

“I’m afraid that our colleagues in the House added a lot on to their bill to subtract from the genuine purposes of health care reform.”

Well, stand in front of the train, Joe. See where it gets you.

What kind of sick, bloated ego do you have, anyway, that you think that you alone must sign on for the Democrats to accomplish anything? What kind of degenerate, smug arrogance does it take for you to convince yourself that the American people need to beg for your indulgence before they can have anything?

You have gone far beyond opposition, Joe. You have now made yourself into the corrupt stuff that has made people despise politics since the dawn of humanity. You've accomplished your goal: now, you are bigger than the Democratic party, bigger than our country. You are as big as evil, as big as Satan, Joe. Proud of yourself?

220-215

It wasn't a big margin and we had to accept a lot of crap to get there, but the medical care reform bill passed the house.

Don't you wish a day would come when congress could pass some needed legislation without having to let Republicans pander to their ignorant, stupid base, and include some more big giveaways to the rich?

I mean, a day when we have a country again with two parties that care about our fate, instead of being stuck with one party that is nothing but a bunch of seditious, corrupt cowards?

The Death of a Movement

Although I'm not sure that a bunch of old white people, bussed in courtesy of big business, really deserves the term.

I was just listening to Fox News while I was making my lunch. Remember the "two million" who showed up for the first teabagger march on Washington? Remember the three or four thousand, reported by the wingnuts as anything from 20,000 to a million, just the other day?

The big vote day is here, and I heard Fox refer to "several hundred" protesters who showed up today. That's it, baby. "Several hundred." The other three hundred million of us stayed home. I guess we weren't all that worried that public health care would lead to Auschwitz.

Bye bye, teabaggers. It's been fun.

Why Oh Why Does the Press Help Them?

John Cole, one of our best left-wing bloggers:

"I seriously do not get this country. The subservience to the Republicans by the media at least made sense when they were in the majority and held the Presidency in 2001. But this is 2009, the Republicans have been routed electorally for the past few years, everything the Republican party believed in failed miserably the last eight years and they have been exposed as total frauds....It is nothing but fail, fail, fail, from the GOP, they just lost two more seats in the house, they are going through a horrible (yet delicious) civil war, yet according to the media, everything is bad news for Democrats."

I do not mean to pick on Mr. Cole, who I really like. I have heard this sort of thing consistently for a couple of decades from the left.

Well, here's your answer. It's so simple, it explains everything, and to me it is totally obvious. I have never understood the left wing resistance to accepting it.

During the administration of (who else?) Ronald Reagan, "deregulation" was king. One of the many catastrophes brought on by this right wing cant was that, over a short period of time, most of the "mainstream media" ended up being owned by large corporations. These corporations exist to make their owners rich, as fast as possible. They do not give a damn about truth, journalistic obligation or anything else except short term profit. They see (quite correctly) that their best opportunity to sate their rapaciousness for another quarter or two is with Republicans, who they have already bought in their entirety, in control of the country. And they are doing everything they can to see that Republicans are in control, regardless of the fact that we all know what long term disasters await us when we let Republicans run things.

It's a simple corporate decision. That's it. There you go. Question answered.

Betrayed By Business Again

Here are two facts that, taken in conjunction, make a miserable comment on the state of the American economy:

"Unemployment rate rises to 10.2%
It's the first time it has hit double digits since 1983. Employers cut 190,000 jobs last month, a bigger drop than expected."

"Nonfarm business sector labor productivity
increased at a 9.5 percent annual rate during the third quarter of 2009, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today."

Get the joke? Yes, the government's efforts to improve the economy are producing results, but our business leaders have decided to take all of their increase in sales in the form of "increased productivity," i.e. squeezing more work out of their existing workers. Still need a hint: they have decided to take all of the economic improvement in the form of higher profits, rather than adding more jobs. This has the double benefit of further enriching themselves, and seeing to it that American working people remain in misery.

Here's the story in our country, for those who have not accepted it yet. People who control big businesses in this country are almost entirely criminals, and like any criminal, from petty vandals to serial killers, they have no intention of stopping their criminal behavior. And they are not going to stop until the rest of us have the resolve to hurt them really bad. Ten or twenty or thirty thousand of them serving life prison sentences would be a start. We have a right to protect ourselves from predators, and no one can believe, at this point, that they will ever stop on their own.

The Hopelessness of the Blue Dogs

This comment was inspired by something I heard Ed Schultz say yesterday. I don't mean to pick on Ed, who I have liked very much since he went on MSNBC- I have heard similar things from a number of people.

Ed said that he thought Obama needed to be much more forceful with congress, after the manner of Lyndon Johnson, who was famous for manipulating congress like a slave master.

I think this view misses something. In the time of Lyndon Johnson, candidates were dependent on the support of the party and its adherents for the means to run for election or re-election. Johnson could enforce party discipline because he had the power to deny that to them.

Today, in the world of legalized corruption left to us by deregulation and the explosion of lobbyists, the situation is sadly different. Remember that, for a Democrat, to buck his party is to side with the rich and their companies. The likes of Ben Nelson and Joe Lieberman find that these people are ready at a moment's notice to step in to fill their campaign coffers and keep them in office. Thus, regardless of what he might want or say, Obama simply does not have the power that Lyndon Johnson had.

Unfortunately, this phenomenon does not work both ways. To buck the Republican party is to side with the poor, the sick, the disenfranchised. These people do not have the money to buy their treason.

It is undoubtedly true, as has been pointed out, that there is an authoritarian streak in people attracted to the right wing; and this does indeed explain a lot about the lack of dissent on the Republican side. However, I believe that what I have described above is a significant factor in the presence of Ben Nelsons and Mary Landrieius among us, and the party's inability to deal with them.

What Do You Think?

Crooks And Liars asks the following question:

"What happens after all the fear mongering that Iran is developing a nuclear weapons bunker turns out to be bunk?"

Answer: Nothing. The Republicans will go on telling the same lies they have for years.

How could you think anything else would happen? Particularly when the press only reports the news that helps Republicans.

Wingnut Wrapup

It's been a while. Here's a little fun for anyone who cares:

World Net Daily: "Shooter advised Obama transition-Fort Hood triggerman aided team on Homeland Security task force"

Pam Geller, Atlas Shrugs: "Major Muslim Hasan Participated in Homeland Security Panel for Obama"

Two sources for a particularly preposterous lie that conservatives are enjoying today. There's just no end to their ability to swallow this sort of thing, is there? Tomorrow: "Charlie Manson appointed newest Obama Czar!"

World Net Daily: "Congressman 'amazed' by turnout at Capitol- GOP's Franks: Americans 'don't want health-care monstrosity shoved down their throats"

Or at least the 2-4,000 Americans that they managed to turn out for their latest public tantrum. That Congressman Franks guy is apparently pretty easy to amaze.

Face it: The teabag movement is dead. The teabaggers all ran out of Geritol and went home.

World Net Daily: "Obama divulges Malia's grades, not his own"

This is Green Eagle's nomination for the most pathetic right wing smear of the day. Really, guys, is this all you've got?

World Net Daily: "Conservatives couldn't overcome 2-party system in New York"

I don't know what that's supposed to mean, but I bet it didn't mean "they didn't get enough votes." You know, that's all it takes to "overcome" the 2-party system.

Jonah Goldberg, Town Hall: "The End of an Era That Never Began"

What? Dick Cheney's thousand year Reich? The Golden Age of Jonah Goldberg's Plus-80 IQ?

Jillian Bandes, Town Hall: "On Short Notice, Conservatives Turn Out Against Obamacare"

Yeah Jillian, all 4,000 of them. Back in the sixties, we could get 4,000 students to turn out on short notice at any State university in the country, to protest cafeteria food. And we didn't have a national news network, a major political party and millions of corporate dollars behind us.

Linda Chavez, Town Hall: "Blueprint for GOP Victories"

How about this blueprint, Linda: Stop lying every day and actually try to make this a better country?

Nicholas Guariglia, Pajamas Media: "The Three Wartime Instincts Obama Lacks"

Oh, let's guess: Invading the wrong country, forgetting to go after the guy that really attacked us, and not bothering to figure out a way to win. After all, that's your way to wage a war, right?

Gateway Pundit: "SEN. BOXER BREAKS SENATE RULES… Passes Cap-&-Tax Out of Committee Without Single GOP Member in Attendance"

Oh boo hoo. The Republicans were "boycotting" the committee, of course, i.e. throwing a juvenile fit because they couldn't win through democratic means. So, Republicans aren't rulebreakers, right? Just corrupt, anti-American brats.

Gateway Pundit: "Disgusting… After Dithering For 2 Minutes Obama Finally Gets Around to Discussing Ft. Hood Massacre"

Two minutes. Gateway guy, do I have to bring up My Pet Goat again? Boy, conservatives have short memories.

How Would They Feel About This?

-From the department of "heads I win, tails you lose:"

I just heard Laura Ingraham on the radio, in a fit of vicious anger, claiming that the shooting yesterday by a Muslim army doctor proves that Obama's terrorism strategy is a TOTAL FAILURE!!!!!

I wonder how Laura and her wingnut associates would have reacted if they found out that the Obama administration was investigating active duty U. S. military officers for terrorism. Do you think they would have been all for it? Or do you think it would be time to brace for yet one more round of disingenuous screaming and howling?

Report From Green Eagle Institute of Teabag Size Analysis

Green Eagle presents the following entirely scientific calculation of the size of yesterday's Fox News/Michelle Bachman Grand Teabag Tantrum:

Sean Hannity reports that there were 20,000 in attendance.

Now, as you may remember, at the last Washington Teabag Tantrum and 9/11 Political Exploitation Faire, 70,000 attendees were reported by the likes of Hannity to have been 2 million. Thus, the actual attendees amounted to 3.5% of claimed attendees. Using this known fact as a standard, we can now, through a simple feat of multiplication, calculate the actual attendance at yesterday's event, using the formula: H times 0.035 = R; where H represents Hannity's lying claims, and R represents the actual attendance.

We thus arrive at the likely real size of the great National Demonstration against Healthcare: 700.

And Green Eagle is sticking by that number, suckers. So deal with it.

Now, if you happen to have missed this grand event, sponsored by Congressional Republicans, here is a photo of a large banner displayed front and center, where nobody could miss it:

Tasty, huh? Giving people health care is just like Nazi death camps. I have yet to hear a single Congressional Republican, a number of whom attended this rally, speak out against this loathsome banner. Of course, let Obama utter any criticism of Fox News, and the right wing howling commences. These people are not the kind of political opposition that any of us have seen in this country in our lifetimes. and at some point we are going to have to figure out how to deal with them.

Republican Stupidity for Today

Here's a little sample of the brilliant political observation which our Republican party has to offer the American people these days:

RNC Chairman Michael Steele, channeling his party's energized conservative wing, said the party will "come after" moderates who support President Obama's domestic policies.

Michael, you guys are at 20% of the American people right now. I say, why not go for 15%, or even 12%. I know you can do it, guy.

David Broder, Washington Post: "Tuesday's defeats in gubernatorial elections in Virginia and New Jersey not only ended a decade or more of Democratic gains in those states but also signaled possible trouble ahead in the midterm elections at the national level.

At the same time, the loss of another Republican House seat in a special election -- the fourth such defeat in the past two years -- showed how bitter ideological conflict within the party could cripple the GOP's prospects for a comeback."

Democrats lose- it's because people hate the Democrats. Republicans lose- it's due to some minor internal issue. As usual, David Broder is at his finest when he's proving that no matter what happens, it's good for the Republicans.

Newt Gingrich, referring to the Republican nomination of Dede Scofazza, or whatever the hell her name is: "I think the nomination was a mistake. I wish that we had gotten involved earlier. And if we had, I would have done everything I could to make sure she had not been picked. And she clearly proved in the last few days that she was in no way a loyal Republican."

Of course, Gingrich supported her all the way. Until Rush Limbaugh blamed him for her failure. Way to go with the bravery there, Newt. And the sense of personal responsibility for which the Republican party is so famous.

Lunacy, lies and self delusion. It's what they're good at. And I haven't even gotten to Michelle Bachmann today.

Joe Lieberman

Still a jerk.

Just in case you hadn't noticed.

Green Eagle's Election Wrapup

So the Dems only won one out of three high media profile elections, and the press is going right along with the Republican talking points, claiming that this represents some huge repudiation of Obama. Funny how, when the Republicans lose, we hear over and over again the old saying, "all politics is local."

Here are the messages that Green Eagle took away from the events of last Tuesday:

First, the biggest wakeup call for Democrats: New Jersey. What we learned there is that, even though Republicans represent a small minority at this point, if the Dem canditate has worked as hard as Corzine did to make himself out to be a total fool, he can still be knocked off by a Republican. Strange as it seems, people don't want just Democrats, they want good Democrats.

Speaking of which, we have exhibit two: Mr. Deeds in Virginia, one of the most pathetic politicians I have ever seen. This bozo started out running way to the right of the coalition of voters that put Obama into the White House and gave us both houses in Congress, and every time polling showed him sinking further in the polls, went further to the right, running away from the winning positions from 2008, in some sort of lunatic attempt to lure nonexistent Republican moderates. And then people wonder why so many people who voted for Obama stayed home this time. The lesson? To the unbelievably stupid people who make up the Washington press, no one wants Obama's agenda. To rational human beings, the large majority that voted for Obama's agenda can not be counted to vote for any jerk with a (D) after his name, unless he to supports Obama's (i.e. the American people's) agenda. People want health care and economic recovery. Apparently Deeds didn't, so goodbye to him. There really is a lesson there.

Finally, the upstate New York congressional race in which a Democrat had not won since the 1870's. With big financial support, a right wing lunatic managed to destroy the chances of the Republican nominee, only to be rejected himself by the electorate.

Honestly, I don't think there is much of a lesson here at all, except that, when you let stupid people run things, stupid things happen. However, there is one big loser in this race: the wingnut candidate's strong supporter, Ms. Sarah Palin. Palin just went a long way to demonstrating her inablility to deliver votes for the Republican party, and thereby helping insure her well-deserved future irrelevance. No one seems to want to point that out, but I thing it makes her the biggest casualty of this off-year election.

My Score: Republican 0; Democrats 0; Palin -10.

Update: This, from Katherine Lopez, one of our very serious conservative voices, at National Review Online:

"Watch it be spun as a defeat for Sarah Palin and the hateful extreme right-wing of the Republican party"

You got it, girl. That's just what it was. Too bad.

Sorry

Green Eagle has been out of commission for a few days, but he's back, and crankier than ever.
