Partition- Is it coming?

From Chuck Baldwin, at Renew America:

"So, will the United States break up in 2010? Or 2011? Or 2012? Or anytime in the near future, for that matter? If history is any teacher, the chances would seem good that (this prediction) may be closer to reality than anyone would like to admit."

Good idea, Chuck. I think I'm behind you on this one. Here's my proposal, for your consideration:

What do you think? Oh, and don't let the door hit you on the way out.

More About Honduras

I can't say I searched the right wing blogosphere with a microscope today, but in my daily walk on the wild side, I found not a single comment about the latest actions of the Honduran military dictatorship, which they admire so much for its upholding of the constitution of Honduras by ousting the elected president on trumped up charges of violating their constitution.

I did, however, find this:

Gateway Pundit: "Newt Gingrich Blasts Obama Administration For Backing Leftist Criminal in Honduras"

"For the first time in history the United States government is siding with Marxist leaders Hugo Chavez, Daniel Ortega, Raul Castro and Evo Morales against the pro-democratic Honduran government of Roberto Micheletti."

As has happened in the past, of course, Newt fails to mention some others who sided with us on this issue: for example, France, Spain, Italy, Britain, Germany, Chile, Colombia, Argentina, Ecuador, Taiwan, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, Mexico, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Paraguay, U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, the U. N. General Assembly, by vote by acclamation without one single objection, the European Union. Casts a different light on things, huh?

Now, here is what this patriotic, constitution-loving military dictatorship did this week, just to remind you:

"Coup Declares State of Siege, Suspends Constitutional Rights

On Sept. 26 the coup regime took abuse of illegitimate power one giant step forward by issuing an Executive Decree to suspend guaranteed rights under Articles 69, 72, 78, 81 and 84 of the Honduran Constitution....the decree declares a virtual state of siege in the country through the suspension of civil liberties.

Freedom of movement for all Hondurans has now been prohibited formally....All unauthorized public meetings are also prohibited.

....the coup regime warns that violence has now been "legally" authorized. The decree....states that the National Police can use violent means of repression: "The Police can use the force of coactive instruments when the use of nonviolent procedures has been exhausted or failed..." and authorizes the Armed Forces to assist the police in executing the decree.

Under Article 3 of the Decree, CONATEL, the state communications agency "through the use of the National Police and Armed Forces, is authorized to suspend any radio, television or cable system that does not conform its programming to the present dispositions"

Uh huh. For your information, policy wonks, here are a few excerpts from the Honduran constitution. These have been autotranslated, so the syntax is a little strange, but I'm sure you will get the idea:

"ARTICLE 3 .- No one owes obedience to a usurper government or to those who assume public office or employment by force of arms....Acts verified by such authorities are zero....

ARTICLE 5 .- The government must rest on the principle of participatory democracy

ARTICLE 72 .- It's free expression of opinion by any media without prior censorship.

ARTICLE 74 .- You can not restrict the right to freedom of thought by indirect methods or means

Article 79 .- Everyone has the right to meet with others peacefully and unarmed, in a public demonstration or transitional assembly, in relation to their common interest of any nature, without warning or special permission.

Article 81 .- Everyone has the right to move freely, leave, enter and remain in the country.

Article 84 .- No one shall be arrested or detained except by written order of a competent authority issued with the legal formalities and for reasons previously established in the Act

Article 94 .- No person shall impose any penalty without having been heard and convicted in a trial, and without that has been imposed by decision rendered by a judge or competent authority.

Article 95 .- No person shall be punished with sentences not previously established by law.

Well, well, well. A little difference there, between these passages and the above decree, huh? I am anxiously waiting for the many conservatives who cheered Honduras' military coup, to now speak out on their impression of this latest decree as an example of that wonderful day of liberation for the people of Honduras. This subject has taken on particular interest today, with the recent publication, discussed below, of a right wing document calling for the same sort of liberation in our own country.

Can they turn our country into a military dictatorship? I don't think so. Do they want to? You betcha.

Update: Here's a "conservative" writing today, via Stogie at Saberpoint. This person believes in boycotting websites he disagrees with, so I won't mention his name:

"Our Founding Fathers gave us both tools and encouragement to over throw ANY government that grows tyrannical.... So while talk of a military coup is shocking and scary, the military’s allegiance to the Constitution is just another check and balance in our form of government designed to keep a free people free."

Yup. A military coup- just another check and balance. You can see where that argument is going.

Joke of the Day

From the Washington Times:

"The world became safer when President Ronald Reagan and Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher were in power."

The Right Ratchets It Up a Notch

Here we go- a post from the fairly mainstream right wing Newsmax. A number of blogs have latched onto this one, and I'm going to join in:

Obama Risks a Domestic Military ‘Intervention’

By John Perry

"There is a remote, although gaining, possibility America’s military will intervene as a last resort to resolve the “Obama problem.” Don’t dismiss it as unrealistic."

A last resort, of course. I mean, they wouldn't have any other choice, right?

America isn’t the Third World. If a military coup does occur here it will be civilized."

Oh, of course. A civilized military coup. How nice.

"That it has never happened doesn’t mean it wont. Describing what may be afoot is not to advocate it."

Of course not. Really. There isn't the slightest sign in your remarks that this is what you want. You're just "describing."

"Officers swear to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. Unlike enlisted personnel, they do not swear to “obey the orders of the president of the United States.”

Top military officers can see the Constitution they are sworn to defend being trampled as American institutions and enterprises are nationalized. "

So of course, the answer is to have a military coup. But don't forget, it will be a polite one. That will certainly constitute defending the constitution, won't it? Those military officers will be able to comfort themselves that, by seizing control of the government, and creating a dictatorship, they are preserving our constitution. Yes sir. That's obvious. Washington and Jefferson would be so proud of them.

"What happens if the generals Obama sent to win the Afghan war are told by this president (who now says, “I’m not interested in victory”) that they will be denied troops they must have to win? Do they follow orders they cannot carry out, consistent with their oath of duty? Do they resign en masse?"

Following orders given by the commander in chief. No, that would never do. He's black- let's not forget that.

"Or do they soldier on, hoping the 2010 congressional elections will reverse the situation? Do they dare gamble the national survival on such political whims?"

Because two years of Obama will destroy everything that our country is supposed to be about. Much better to have a military dictatorship.

"Anyone who imagines that those thoughts are not weighing heavily on the intellect and conscience of America’s military leadership is lost in a fool’s fog."

If these thoughts are "weighing heavily on the intellect and conscience of America's military leadership," they belong in prison for crimes against the state. You forgot to mention that.

"Will the day come when patriotic general and flag officers sit down with the president, or with those who control him, and work out the national equivalent of a “family intervention,” with some form of limited, shared responsibility?"

Ah yes. Shared responsibility between the elected president and a military junta. I remember that from the last time I read the constitution, yes sir!

"Imagine a bloodless coup to restore and defend the Constitution through an interim administration that would do the serious business of governing and defending the nation. Skilled, military-trained, nation-builders would replace accountability-challenged, radical-left commissars."

A bloodless coup to restore and defend the Constitution. Military trained nation builders. Have you ever, in your life, heard of an idea at once so vicious, so criminal, so hateful and so ludicrous all at once? Have you ever heard anything, even from the mouths of Hitler or Mussolini, which is more foreign to our constitution and our country?

"A coup is not an ideal option, but Obama’s radical ideal is not acceptable or reversible.

Unthinkable? Then think up an alternative, non-violent solution to the Obama problem."

Well, here's one idea. Wait until 2012 and try to vote him out. But maybe that idea doesn't seem as constitutional to Republicans as a military dictatorship.

Remember when one of the Dixie Chicks said that she was ashamed to be from the same state as George W. Bush? Remember the endless shrieks of outrage and hatred that were directed at her? But this is okay. It's okay for a Republican to call for military dictatorship as a better alternative to a Democratic President. It's okay for them to mindlessly claim that military rule would uphold our constitution. It's okay for them to make a mockery of everything that made this country work.

So this is where we have come to. Ten months of a Democratic president, and Republicans are openly advocating military dictatorship.

The question, unfortunately, is not where we have come to, it's where we are going to end up.

Update: From the weasels at Newsmax: "After several reader complaints, Newsmax wanted to insure that this article was not misinterpreted. It was removed...."

Don't worry, guys. We're not misinterpreting this article. There's not a chance that we are going to do that.

Not a chance.

If you want to read the original, seeing as how Newsmax has cravenly removed it, here's a link to the cache. Believe me, there's more to disgust you there.

Further Update:
From Confederate Yankee: "
Far too many people are swallowing... Perry.... as coming from the right ..., when this coup talk is really coming from the left"

Newsmax- the left. Boy, they really can't take responsibility for anything, can they. Of course, naturally it's the left that is advocating a coup against our socialist leader.

Things You'd Never Know if You Didn't Listen to Dennis Prager

For today:

"Environmentalists as a rule are responsible for millions of deaths."

..........

Thanks for that, Dennis.

Two Morons

Max Baucus and Harry Reid.

Wingnut Wrapup

They're feeling their oats today:

Phyllis Schlafly, Town Hall: "Singing Heil Obama in New Jersey"

It gets more pathetic every day, huh? Heil Obama. I wonder if those are the words they really used.

Erick Erickson, Red State: "Obama Administration Condones Sex With Minors."

His Evidence: "People with low IQ got to see Whoopee Goldberg defend Roman Polanski on the View yesterday. Goldberg had no problem with the man filling a thirteen year old girl with alcohol and drugs before raping her."

Whoopee Goldberg is now, apparently, the entire Obama administration. Well, you know, they all look alike. You know what I mean.

Streiff, Red State: "Common Sense Outlawed in Indiana"

Streiff, where have you been, man? Common sense was outlawed in Indiana decades ago.

Little Pammy Geller, Atlas Shrugs: "Afghanistan: Fatal Misunderstanders of Islam, "When you treat the Afghans with kid gloves, they will bite off your hand"

Ouch, Pammy, that would hurt. Probably not as much as having some foreign soldiers come and shoot up your village, but still, who wants to have their hand bitten off.

Power Line: "It is quite remarkable that the Democratic Party now--belatedly, to say the least--wants to make an issue out of civility. The Left published a cartoon depicting former black Secretary of State Condolezza Rice as an Aunt Jemima..."

The Left, huh? The Left published something. By that reasoning, The Right published Mein Kampf.

Power Line: "Cheney for President"

That would be Liz, not her dad. Oh my God in heaven above: Could they possibly have sunk so low? Sarah Palin with bleach blond hair and an eating disorder. And a psychotic, criminal dad. Just what we need.

Pajamas Media: "The 2007 NIE Was a Deliberate LIE"

Yeah, it came from the Bush Administration, guys. What did you expect it to be?

Newsmax: "Leading national security expert Frank Gaffney tells Newsmax we could be in the "last days" before Iran obtains nuclear weapons — and he warns that, if it does, it absolutely will use them."

Leading national security expert Green Eagle warns that we could be in the "last days" before Santa goes rogue and starts dropping anthrax on us from his sleigh. Just as much evidence to support Green Eagle's theory as Frank Gaffney's, but Frank Gaffney gets to put his opinion in Newsweek. He's earned that position in the traditional way: by being wrong about every damned thing on earth for thirty years.

David Limbaugh, Newsmax: "Obama Looks to Save World at US Expense"

God forbid! God forbid that we should have to pay to save the world. Better to just let it go to hell, huh?

Washington Times: "Democrats try to pack the courts"

How dare they! Only Republicans should be allowed to appoint judges. It's the American way.

Sher Zieve, Renew America: "Obama's enemies of liberty, freedom, and humans on a roll"

Frankly, Sher, I don't know about you, but I'm an enemy of humans on a roll too. It sounds like it would taste terrible.

London Telegraph: "Andy Williams accuses Obama of following Marxist theory"

Boy, that will sting. Andy Williams. What, was Chuck Norris nodding off today?

World Net Daily Exclusive: "Empire State Building celebrates communism"

Forget the communism. I'm already disturbed by the idea of buildings celebrating anything. Really, I'd prefer it if they would just sit there and be still.

And, finally, in case you didn't have enough to worry about today, from Pamela Schuffert: "Every year in America alone, in to the upper hundreds of THOUSANDS of victims are sacrificed on the satanic altars in this nation, and the news media BLACKS IT OUT."

The bastards.

A Little Honduras Update

We all remember, I am sure, the tremendous victory for democracy that occurred in Honduras recently, when the legally elected president was replaced by a military coup, thus ensuring the right to liberty for all Hondurans- or at least that's the interpretation I documented from literally dozens of conservative sources.

Well, right wingers, there's more good news for you:

The decree, sent out in its published form by First Lady Xiomara Zelaya, states that the National Police can use violent means of repression: "The Police can use the force of coactive instruments when the use of nonviolent procedures has been exhausted or failed..." and authorizes the Armed Forces to assist the police in executing the decree.

Under Article 3 of the Decree, CONATEL, the state communications agency "through the use of the National Police and Armed Forces, is authorized to suspend any radio, television or cable system that does not conform its programming to the present dispositions"

I am sure that all of you on the right who fearlessly stood up for the democratic right of Hondurans to live in a military dictatorship, are deeply gratified to see things in that country developing exactly as we could have expected. I am sure it won't be long now, before the people of Honduras win the freedom to be thrown in jail without charges, and the God-given right to disappear without a trace in the middle of the night.

Update: They're still at it. From Power Line today:

"Many observers, however, have pointed out that the deposition of Zelaya was entirely legal under the Honduran Constitution"

Nothing to say about whether the actions described above were "entirely legal under the Honduran Constitution."

Wingnut Wrapup

A short lineup today, with major contributions from Renew America, my current pick as looniest website on earth:

Lloyd Marcus, Renew America: "Stop allowing the left to set the rules"

Lloyd, let me explain something to you about elections, and what they are about. First, you see....Oh never mind, what's the point.

Kevin Price, Renew America: "Obama should learn from FDR's mistakes"

Apparently FDR caused the depression with his stimulus, two years before he was even elected. Obama is about to do the same thing. If he keeps up his stimulus programs, he will succeed in causing an economic collapse that happened before he was elected, too. We'll think about that reasoning, Kevin. Off hand, I'm just not sure that I buy it.

J. R. Dieckman, Renew America: "Doomsday is coming to America"

Obama's fault again, somehow.

Jen Shroder, Renew America: "Obama's illegitimate war on Israel"

Not so illegitimate that he hasn't lately earned the praise of right-leaning Israeli prime minister Netanyahu, and his defense minister, Ehud Barak, but apparently the American right has more concern for Israeli security than Israel's own conservative government.

Or maybe they don't give a damn about Israel, and they will tell any lie to attack Obama, regardless of how Israelis feel about things. Take your choice.

Reverend Grant Swank, Renew America: "Biblical Christians hold that the God of Scripture has intervened on numerous occasions in order to keep our Republic intact. Why? One major reason is that America is the only nation that began with believers holding high Christ as Savior and the Bible as the Word of God."

The only nation. No other nation in history was founded by Christians. At least not the kind of Christians Rev. Swank is talking about.

Thank God for that.

Fred Hutchison, Renew America: "A snake on the capitol dome"

Fred, maybe you should pay a little more attention to your fellow posters there on Renew America, before you make assertions like this. Here is photographic evidence from another article today, on your very own website:

Doesn't look like a snake to me. Boy, I bet you feel foolish now.

World Net Daily: "Slippery Tactics: Obama declares war on oil-Calls to end fossil-fuel subsidies...."

So, it's "war on oil" if we dare stop giving billions of our tax dollars every year to the most profitable corporations in the history of the world. Don't forget, by the way, we can't afford universal health coverage.

James Lewis, American Thinker: "As President Obama fumbled badly at the UN and G-8 last week, Sarah Palin began re-defining herself as presidential timber."

And you began re-defining yourself as delusional thinker of the day. Keep telling yourself that, guys. Believe me, there's no one on earth we'd rather run against than this braindead, lying quitter.

Well, that's enough for today. The rest is just boring garbage. See you later.

Child Molester

I want to report to you one of the most loathsome right wing smear jobs I have ever heard. I must say first that I saw this item at Sadly, No! I generally avoid just repeating things others have found, but this is so far beyond the pale that I think it needs all of the attention we can give it.

As you may know, after several months of lunatic right wing claims about the census being a step toward dictatorship, a Federal census worker named Bill Sparkman was found hanged recently, stripped and bound with tape, and with the word "Fed" scrawled on his chest, in a very right wing part of the country.

Here is a response to this incident from one Dan Riehl, a mid level right wing blogger:

"Was Census Worker Bill Sparkman A Child Predator?

Update: Before any more people start going bonkers that I'm accusing Sparkman of anything, take a breath. I've done a fair amount of crime blogging mixed in with politics over time. One doesn't rule anything in or out without some firm answers."

Oh no, he isn't accusing Sparkman of anything, no, of course not. Of course, when anyone is murdered, we can't rule out that they are a child molester, can we, until someone proves otherwise? Even if there is not one shred of evidence of any such thing. No, it's perfectly all right to demand that someone prove this poor victim of violence was not a child molester. And don't you dare go "bonkers" claiming that Dan is accusing him of anything. Dan just wants to know. Could this man have been a child molester? There's no evidence that he is, but there's no proof that he's not, whatever form that proof might take.

No consideration in Dan's article of the possibility that someone decided to act out the lies and fantasies of Michelle Bachmann and other "serious" Republican spokesmen. I guess we'd need proof to suggest that. But smearing this dead man as a child molester- that's just fine.

This is what we are dealing with today in this country- absolute moral corruption combined with absolute lack of shame. Where it will lead is anyone's guess, but I promise you, it won't lead to anywhere you'd want to be.

Republicans Amazed

I found this item at right wing website Red State so interesting:

"A Daily Show Two-fer: Bashing the Dems Open Thread "

The piece featured two clips of Jon Stewart making fun of a couple of Democrats.

It is enough to totally stagger the imagination of Republicans that one Democrat would dare to criticize another Democrat.

That sort of thing would never be allowed in the Republican party. That's why, as Karl Rove predicted, the Republicans have pushed the Democrats out of power for a thousand years.

Infomercial?

TPM Reports:

"New Birther Infomercial Rolled Out In 7 States"

Infomercial? Shouldn't that be "lieomercial" or something?

Republicans Ready for More Criminal Stupidity

Here We Go Again:

"Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ) suggested on Meet the Press this morning that the way to deal with Iran and its nuclear program is to push for regime change.

Kyl also implied that the time for talking with Iran is over -- or should be soon. "At a certain point, talking is counterproductive rather than productive because time is not on our side," he said, adding later that "the carrot approach does not work with these people."

Thank the lord in heaven above that Republicans are not running this country right now, and let's pray that they never get their hands on the government again. Didn't they learn one damned thing from their eight years of grotesque mismanagement of the country? Or are they proud of the great job they did "bringing democracy" to Iraq, a country far smaller than Iran, which had no viable army?

In the lead above, I called this "criminal stupidity." That hardly begins to express the lunatic derangement that could produce this suggestion.

Or is it just that, seeing Obama's success at mobilizing world opinion in favor of joint action against Iran, they will do anything to keep him from winning this victory for our country, regardless of the price? I guess a couple of trillion dollars down the drain, and a few thousand more dead American soldiers seems like a good deal to them, rather than have a Democratic president succeed.

Oh, and by the way, we can't afford to reform medical care. Don't forget that.

Beltway Pundit Demonstrates Stupidity Again

Charles Krauthammer, a classic example of how being wrong about everything for forty years straight earns you a place as a respectable voice in our media:

"He started out saying things like no nation can dominate another. He said no group of nations ought to be above others," said Krauthammer. "What do our allies think when they hear that?"

What do they think, Charles? Let me tell you what they think. They think that, at last, there is a sane adult in the White House. That's what they think, you stupid, ignorant tool.

Republicans: Let the CIA Go!

As Reported in the Washington Post:

"Republicans on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence said Friday that they will no longer participate in an investigation into the Bush administration's interrogation policies, arguing that Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr.'s decision to reexamine allegations of detainee abuse by the CIA would hobble any inquiry....

"Had Mr. Holder honored the pledge made by the President to look forward, not backwards, we would still be active participants in the Committee's review," the ranking Republican on the intelligence panel, Sen. Christopher S. Bond of Missouri, said in a statement. "What current or former CIA employee would be willing to gamble his freedom by answering the Committee's questions?"

"Looking forward" being, in this case, not looking at all. What they are really saying is they will participate in an investigation of their party's management of our national defense, as long as it doesn't investigate anything. That will really accomplish something, huh?

And by the way, Senator Bond, in answer to your question, what former CIA employee would be willing to "gamble his freedom" by answering the committee's questions- only the ones who didn't commit any crimes. You know, Senate committees generally investigate when things went wrong, not when everybody did the right thing. By your logic, we might as well never investigate anything, on the assumption that no criminal is going to tell the truth to Congress.

How about this? Let's give it a try and see what they have to say. Let's not just let them go on the assumption that there is not a single honest American patriot in the entire CIA.

Although, based on past performance, that may well turn out to be the truth.

Wingnut Wrapup, Back Again

Well, there's so little news these days that I thought I would take a little dip in the wicky wacky world that is today's conservatism. It's not as funny as it was a few months ago, and I'm not as inclined to cut them as much slack as before, but here's what there is:

Michelle Malkin, Town Hall: "The Three R's in the Age of Obama: Rappin', Revolution and Radicalism"

Negro! Communist! Negro Communist! Communist Negro!!!!! There! I guess Michelle made her point.
Not racist, of course. Don't you dare suggest that. If you do, you are the racist, get it buddy? Now, back to the main point. NEGRO!

Janet Shaw Crouse, Town Hall: "Does America Need Health Care Reform? U.S. Health Care Costs are Low, Results are High"

How much did someone pay you to say that, you lying scum? And what else, exactly, would you do for your own personal advantage, other than deny forty million people health care?

Suzanne Fields, Town Hall: "When Defenses Go Down"

This refers, of course, to Obama's getting the Russians to back us on action against Iran, in return for us abandoning Ronald Reagan's fantasy laser beam defense system, which has shown absolutely zero ability to work despite thirty years of funding. That's a miserable loss, in Republican minds. A miserable financial loss for defense contractors, anyway.

Charles Krauthammer, Town Hall: "A Great Good Man"

That would be Irving Kristol, the man who invented neoconservatism- the ideology which proved that ex-left wingers can get really rich if they just abandon any shred of decency they possess, and tell whatever lie corporate America puts into their mouths. That was truly a great achievement for mankind.

Power Line: "Obama backs an insane horse"

That would be democracy in Honduras. Colorful imagery there, huh? I mean, who wants to back an insane horse, when you can side with a military dictatorship?

Victor Davis Hansen, Pajamas Media: "Watching the UN watch Ahmadinejad I was reminded of Europe circa July 1941."

Yeah, Victor, but everything reminds you of Europe circa July 1941. Everything, that is, except the insane right wing violence in this country, which you are working so hard to promote.

Power Line: "Worst foreign policy ever?"

Boy, you guys have short memories. They don't even go back ten months.

Gateway Pundit: "Rudy Giuliani Slams UN & Obama Administration on "Dangerous Moral Equivalence"

Rudy, really, you lost any right to lecture us about morality about the time you took your third wife. So, if I were you, I'd just go back to screaming "9/11" every third word. Not that that worked for you either, now that I think of it.

Madeline Crabb, Renew America: "Reaping what we sow--America: Land of liberty and home of the free. But for how long?
In November 2008, by a margin of ten million votes, Barack Hussein Obama was elected the 44th president of the United States. There was plenty of evidence to prove he was one of the most liberal members in both state and federal legislatures..."

Liberal. Yeah, Madeline, that's why we voted for him. Deal with it, lady.

Ilana Mercer, World Net Daily, "Life in the Oink Sector"

That would be government. Or Democrats. Or something. Keep up the serious political analysis there, Ilana.

Fox News: "I felt this was reminiscent of 1930s Germany...."said Robert Bowen, father of two children at Bernice Young Elementary."

More Nazi crap You didn't think I was going to let you off that easy, did you? This time it's about some kids singing a song about Obama. I'll tell you what, guy, when Obama combines the singing with a few million people exterminated and the illegal invasion of a half dozen countries, get back to me, and we'll talk about 1930's Germany. Till then, bug off.

World Net Daily: "Did Obama call on Israel to vacate Temple Mount?"

No, but since you lie about everything else, why not throw this one in too?

Tony Blankley, Human Events: "End the Coarsening of Civic Discourse"

Of course, totally due to Democrats, as can be seen from the serious, high minded discourse that makes it into Wingnut Wrapup on a daily basis.

Steve McCann, American Thinker: "Obama and the Last Hurrah of Liberalism"

Winning is losing. And as usual, it's all good for Republicans. Well, Steve, you go on telling yourself that. See where it gets you.

And today's nomination for most idiotic right wing post of the day, to whom else?

Jonah Goldberg, National Review Online: "H.P. Lovecraft, Fascist?"

The mind boggles. What, is Cthulhu a communist? Really, could anyone on earth be more stupid than Jonah Goldberg?

Idiots

From the Washington Post, and the subject of much comment online today:

"Democratic political committees have seen a decline in their fundraising fortunes this year, a result of complacency among their rank-and-file donors..."

Complacency? I think a better word for what we are feeling might be fury. Fury at being betrayed by Obama and congressional Democrats. Fury at having given everything we could to a pack of liars who seem to be getting ready to hand the insurance companies a colossal, gigantic victory, and call it health care reform. Fury at paying Democrats for what we could have gotten for free from Republicans. Fury, in the end, at being cheated out of what we worked so hard to achieve, by people we trusted.

Prove us wrong, Barack, and the money will come back. Prove us right, and screw you.

An Empty Day

Not much to talk about in the news.

Just a few random thoughts:

Republicans are incredibly boring and stupid.

Rahm Emmanuel is a self serving dick, without a shred of principle.

What does Harry Reid do for a living? Anyway, at the rate he's going, he won't be doing it much longer. For once, a victory for both parties.

Everyone is sick of your waffling, Barack. Play your cards already- there's no one left who you can convince anymore. Time to deliver to your supporters. Or not.

Did I mention that Republicans are incredibly boring and stupid?

Update: On that Rahm thing, a quote today from Kos:

"Rahm's interest in the institution of the House is in the numbers, not in the accomplishments themselves, except insofar as they can be used to generate better numbers. He never really cared, it seemed to me, about doing the things the House actually has to do once it's won. So it's no wonder he built a majority that feels the same way."

Ehud Barack vs, Wingnuts on Israel

Conservative view of Obama's stance toward Israel:

"Obama Attacks Israel at UN General Assembly
Barack Obama just slammed Israel at the United Nations General Assembly this morning.

Obama just put Israel "on the chopping block," said former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. John Bolton."

This, from Gateway Pundit, but similar things are all over the conservative world.

Israeli defense minister, Ehud Barak: "Obama is investing a lot of his political capital in the peace process, and it's important that we don't waste this moment."

Slight difference in tone there, huh? I wonder who to trust more on this issue, Ehud Barak or John Bolton.

Update: This comment from the Israeli newspaper Haaretz: "Netanyahu sees confirmation of Israel positions in Obama's first UN speech"

Netanyahu is, as I am sure you all know, a very conservative politician.

Our lying, seditious, disloyal Republicans will say and do anything to damage Obama, no matter how important the issue is, or what the truth is. If this doesn't represent the greatest threat to the continued existence of our nation, I don't know what it might be.

Pammy Geller, In the Ozone Again

Oh, Pammy....

"Palin in Asia: Real American Leadership Overseas

It is reassuring to know that there is a courageous leader going across the world to show the international community that there are great American leaders who are prepared to stand up and speak for America."

A "leader," of course, who is not courageous enough to remain in her office and do her job. She is, however, "courageous" enough to go anywhere where she will be paid tens of thousands of dollars to shoot her mouth off.

Pam, great leaders lead. When you give up your leadership position to run around spreading lies in an effort to enhance your own political and financial position, you are not a leader, you are a demagogue.

Last week, Barack Obama got the Russians to turn missiles from Eastern Europe to Iran, for which accomplishment he received a barrage of abuse from people like you. Sarah Palin delivered a very well paid for speech.

Which one is a courageous leader, and which one is a loud mouthed jerk?

Obama is Just Like Hitler- Again

I have written before about the current Republican propaganda campaign to paint Obama as a would-be Hitler. This utterly preposterous smear continues unabated, given the lack of any substantive atrocities they can pin on him. Here's another example, a featured article from World Net Daily by one Janet Porter entitled "Austria in the 30's: Mirror to America."

This discussion may be of limited interest to many of my readers; I am satisfying my own interest in this phenomenon by documenting their sordid campaign.

The article primarily consists of the alleged memories of someone named Kitty Werthmann, who "was 12 years old when Adolf Hitler was elected fuhrer of Austria. "

Let us leave aside the wisdom of basing our knowledge of world political affairs on the seventy year old remembrances of a twelve year old. Suffice it to say that Hitler was never "elected" the Fuehrer of Austria or Germany or anywhere else. After the Anschluss, with the German army in charge of Austria, the Germans held a "plebiscite" in which about 99% of the population of Austria "voted" to be absorbed into Germany. Thus, they acquired Hitler as their ruler.

"She witnessed the government take over the banks and the auto industry. Sound familiar?"

Well, not quite. In the first place, Austria's banks and "auto industry" were solvent institutions, not companies facing total collapse without government intervention. Secondly, these companies existed in a foreign country which the Germans had just conquered by force. Now to the facts. Yes, the Reichsbank, the German bank, absorbed Austrian banks. This consisted of seizing the assets of thriving institutions, not paying to prevent those institutions from collapsing in chaos. It's sort of the difference between theft and charity. Not really the same, huh?

Now, as to the Austrian "auto industry." This, in fact, consisted of exactly one company, Steyr-Daimler-Puch. This company also was heavily involved in the manufacture of military equipment. The German conglomerate Vereinigte Industrie-Unternehmungen Aktiengesellschaft began acquiring partial ownership in Steyr-Daimler-Puch after the Anschluss, primarily through the mechanism of capital investment to finance German purchase of military equipment from Steyr-Daimler-Puch; so that, by the middle of World War II, they had acquired effective control of the company. Again, this was a process of absorbing a successful company, not a bailout; and it took place with the full cooperation of the company's owners, who benefited financially from the German orders, and were later, incidentally, enthusiastic employers of slave labor provided by the Germans. When Obama sends slave laborers to build Buicks, lady, get back to me on this one.

"The government takeover of the schools immediately replaced crucifixes with pictures of Hitler and Nazi flags."

Sorry, but I don't remember this happening here. In fact, as I seem to remember, in the United States, Obama could not have the government take over the schools, as the vast majority of them were already run by the government. As for the ones displaying crucifixes, I presume that refers to parochial schools. I must say, I haven't read any news reports yet of Obama ordering the takeover of parochial schools. Maybe I was asleep that day.

"She witnessed the "compulsory youth" service and indoctrination. That sounds a little like Obama's call for "mandatory volunteerism" for America's youth."

Well, maybe it sounds a little like it. Kind of like, "The Nazis had street cleaners and so do governments in America, so we must be Nazis." This kind of reasoning is known as the law of similarity, A.K.A. magic; in other words, "what crazy people believe."

"It is interesting, however, that Obama's speech to the captive audience in the government schools – complete with the essay assignment about how students could help him achieve his political goals – was replaced once the American people got wind of it."

That is a lie, of course, designed to dilute memories of the absurd tantrum conservatives threw at the idea of Obama addressing school children. By the way, I'd be interested in hearing about the similar occasions in late-1930's Germany, when popular opposition led to Hitler changing the content of his speeches. I don't really remember that.

"Werthman's husband saw what his brother faced and left Germany to practice medicine in the United States. Werthmann said, "He marveled at how modern our hospitals were, and how great our medical care is." That's the medical care Obama wants to replace with socialized medicine."

What, the medical care of 1939? I think I'll stick with socialized medicine of 2009.

And by the time this guy moved to America, Hitler's war spending had destroyed most of the social services the government used to provide. A war of aggression instead of domestic spending- now that does sound like America. Just not Obama's America, lady, yours.

"The media was taken over by the government right away," Kitty recalls. "We got free radios and the radio stations were government-run. If you listened to a foreign radio station like the BBC, there was capital punishment," said Werthmann."

Just like Obama does. Listen to the BBC, and they kill you. I see.

"They had Joseph Goebbels; we have Mark Lloyd...."

Oh right. Goebbels, and who? The famous evil propagandist, Mark Lloyd, whose name has become a virtual synonym for hate and destruction?

"While Austria and Germany didn't have a "green movement," Werthmann said relatives living there under the European Union have experienced "a tripling of their energy bills."

You think that might have had something to do with their going to war for five years, and using up all their oil on that? Or do you think it was really because Hitler was so concerned about the environment?

"Werthmann said it took five years for Hitler to rise to a dictatorship"

Which she remembers from 1933, when she was about seven years old. Actually, it took Hitler about three months. See, Obama failed again.

Well, there you go. Obama is just like Hitler in that Obama never did anything that was like what Hitler did. That's the argument, I guess.

Update: By total coincidence, I just came across Kitty Worthmanm's name, on the site Right Wing Watch, where she is identified as: "the head of the South Dakota chapter of the Eagle Forum." That would be Phyllis Schlafly's group. Small world, huh?

Wingnut Breakdown

If you have read this blog for very long (I'm talking to both of you) you will have noticed that, after many months in which I've had great fun bringing the daily lunacy of the right to your attention, I've dribbled to a halt the last few days. I'd like to take a minute to talk about why that is.

Maybe three or four weeks ago, I began to get a sense of a lack of energy in the right wing world. Their output, it seemed to me, lacked the inspired derangement that made them so much fun to mock. I thought at the time that, maybe, I was just suffering from idiocy fatigue, and that, like old jokes, their maunderings just didn't entertain me any more. But now, after a few weeks, I don't believe that. I think it is they who are experiencing fatigue. They seem to have run out of the energy needed to dredge up their daily dose of malice. This has been particularly noticeable since the failed Washington teabag march a couple of weeks ago. They may be putting on a brave face in public (translation: lying their asses off about how many people showed up,) but in their hearts they must know that the masses that were supposedly behind them turned out to be a mirage.

Not that they don't occasionally rise to the occasion, as witness today's contribution from Sher Zieve at Renew America:

"the answers to all of those who are confused about Obama's behaviors is he's trying to destroy this country as fast as he can before the public wakes up completely to what he is! Do you get it now? Obama wants to take this country down...utterly and absolutely. And with no one stopping him, he WILL complete his masters' mission. There is simply no other logical — or otherwise — explanation."

Sure, Sher.

However, in general, like some sort of emotional ebola attack, our latest season of Republican hatemongering seems to be fading fast. Perhaps if, as some have suggested, Obama has been playing rope-a-dope with them, believing that their tantrums would run their course before the actual vote on health care reform occurs, he has been (as he has so often been) more prescient than the rest of us.

I sure hope that is the case, but in any case, right now I have high hopes that the Republicans have worn themselves out by naptime, and the adults will now have a couple of hours of peace in which to get some housecleaning done.

Afghanistan- It's Over

Some generals "leak" their demands for more troops in Afghanistan, and suddenly, it's all over the news again. So, I'm going to repeat something I said not that long ago.

We have lost in Afghanistan. After we drove the Taliban from power, George W. Bush spent six years bombing the hell out of them, and doing absolutely nothing to demonstrate an American willingness to think about their welfare. Bush and Cheney taught them well that we exist to torment them, to kill their relatives without a second thought, to prop up a dictatorial government headed by a former Union Oil employee, and to never, ever do anything that might make their lives better.

My opinion? No matter what Obama does now, it's way too late to turn this situation around. They hate us, and with good reason.

If we had gone into Afghanistan and spent a quarter or a tenth of the two trillion dollars we dumped down the sewer in Iraq, hiring Afghan companies and Afghan workers, to build a modern infrastructure, we might have Afghans who were willing to give us credit for good will. But of course we had no good will, and we are now going to pay the price, in military defeat, which Republicans will of course spend the next half century blaming on Obama.

We've heard a lot the last few years about the defeat and humiliation that England and the Soviet Union faced in Afghanistan. Well, you know what? They didn't give a damn for the Afghan people either. Just like us, they were pursuing their global aspirations without a thought about what Afghans might think. And they paid the price. Afghans are not violent, unthinking animals, as they are portrayed by some in this country. They are also not fools, to be led around by the nose, like a pack of teabaggers. If we had shown them that we could think of their welfare, they might have had some concern for ours.

Pam Geller - Warmonger

Pammy's at it again. Nothing so straightforward that she can't twist it into a smear:

"Stupid or Evil: Barack Hussein Obama ready to slash US nuclear arsenal"

I guess Pam doesn't remember the other president that slashed our nuclear arsenal. That would be Saint Ronald Reagan.

But, of course, what was heroism when a Republican did it, is now treason when a Democrat does the same thing.

Predictable, Pammy justifies her stand with a pack of maundering nonsense about the great threat posed by Iran. Pammy, the United States currently has 9,960 nuclear warheads. Don't you think we could get rid of a couple of thousand of them and still be able to reduce Iran to rubble if we wanted to?

Change We Can Believe In, continuing

I think I've been focusing on Republican tantrums so much lately that I've neglected to mention the good news that continues, step by step, to come from the Obama administration. Here's today's example:

"The fight for Net Neutrality took a big step forward on Monday with the chair of the Federal Communications Commission announcing plans to expand the rules to protect a free and open Internet."

If you've followed this issue at all, you know there are people (i.e. Republicans) who would have loved to see federal rules giving huge corporations the ability to control internet content. Do you think you would ever read the above sentence if we were living with President McCain? Particularly as the internet played such a big part in Democratic victories the last couple of years.

We're not getting everything we want, but let's not forget to be thankful for the good things we are getting.

What, George W. Bush Wasn't Really All That Religious?

From Huffington Post:

"Bush In 2008: "I'm Not Going To Tell Some Gay Kid In The Audience That He Can't Get Married"

Just in case there is anyone out there who bought into the unutterable garbage about "whatever else you say about Bush, he was a principled religious man who stood up for what he believed."

This guy was a liar without a shred of morality, and anyone who really thought that he was a truly religious person should be ashamed of their stupidity. Bush cared about nothing except serving himself and the people who paid to put him in the White House, and nothing else on earth meant a God damned to him. The "Christians" who worshiped him were nothing but suckers; let's not join them.

It is this kind of thinking, which goes beyond naivete to willing self delusion, that fuels meaningless, useless talk about bipartisanship with a party which has spent decades sacrificing anyone and everyone to serve its corporate masters.

Another Obama Success Vanishes Into the Ozone

I've mentioned Obama's great decision to pull the plug on the thirty year long Republican defense boondoggle known as the Strategic Defense Initiative, A.K.A. Star Wars. This multibillion dollar farce got that name, I am sure, because Yoda is as likely to show up at the State of the Union address as this fantasy program ever was to actually work. I pointed out that this decision, like all rational decisions of Obama became the target of an avalanche of right wing abuse, with the predictable "weak on defense" theme.

No surprise there, but there's more.

Obama agreed not to deploy this idiotic system in eastern Europe; in return, Russia agreed to take missiles that had been targeted on eastern Europe and target them on Iran, joining with us in trying to make the Iranian government see things our way. Thus, without fanfare or the slightest show of macho belligerence (an essential component of Republican foreign policy, no matter how many times it fails to work) Obama accomplished the double goal of ratcheting up pressure on Iran, and engaging in joint action with a potential enemy. And all he had to give up was a very expensive fantasy.

Too bad the press didn't notice.

So, the press will go on giving the Republicans a platform to push their eternal line that Democrats can't handle our defense, and the Republicans can go on lying, in defiance of the clear truth that, at last, the adults are running the country.

Stating the Obvious: It's Really Not That Hard

From Time Magazine:

"Plenty of political concerns have been raised over President Barack Obama's decision to scrap plans to deploy a missile-intercept system in Poland and the Czech Republic....The military rationale for Obama's move is hard to argue with."

In other news, "Little to argue with in Obama's decision to stop sending people from Kansas up in tornadoes, to find the land of Oz."

And this just in: "Cheney plan to form an alliance with Darth Vader given limited chance, due to Vader's having lived long, long ago, in a galaxy far, far away"

You have to give the Republicans credit. They scream their heads off about the budget, and then throw a tantrum when Obama stops funding a science fiction project with zero chance of ever working.

Did I say credit? Actually, I'm not sure how much credit you get for stupidity and dishonesty.

Below, artist's rendering of the newest Republican plan to spend a couple of trillion "defending" us against terrorism, which the Democrats better not oppose if they don't want to be called a bunch of big, fat gay sissies.

A Depressing Political Reality

There's so much out there to be depressed about. What has been depressing me lately is the way in which the Republican party and their collaborators known as the mainstream press have managed to reduce our entire political discourse to nothing but an endless sequence of ludicrous Republican lies, and the need of Democrats to spend their time dealing with them. I have said before that I believe this is because Republicans cannot hope to win a fair discussion of the issues, as they are nothing but front men for the most corrupt of the rich. On a whim, I spent a few minutes listing some of the right wing lies that have gained currency over the last year or so. I am sure I missed a lot of them, but here are the ones I thought of:

We Don't Know Who Barack Obama Is

Obama is an illegal alien

Health care reform will result in government death panels that will decide if you live or die

Obama is a Muslim

Obama is a Communist "Manchurian candidate"

Obamacare will provide free abortions on demand

Obama and the Democrats are responsible for the economic collapse of America

Letting poor people buy houses is what caused the real estate bubble to burst

Obama will give free medical care to all illegal aliens

Obama is going to raise taxes on the middle class

Acorn is some sort of subversive organization

Obama won the election by cheating because he spent more money than McCain

Democrats are the real racists

Democrats are really Nazis

Liberals are in league with Islamic religious fanatics

Global warming is a gigantic hoax

Democrats are all out to destroy Christianity

Obama is attacking our intelligence agents by holding them responsible for crimes they commit

Torture is not torture when we do it

The tenth amendment basically prohibits the Federal government from doing anything that Right Wingers don't like, particularly when it comes to taxes.

Obama is an antisemite who is working to destroy Israel

Bill Ayers actually wrote Obama's book

The press is in Obama's pocket

Obama is a subversive because his preacher made a couple of speeches that some people didn't like

The tea parties are a massive popular phenomenon, rather than a systematically manipulated publicity stunt

The stimulus didn't work

Obama has appointed a lot of "Czars," which is a really scary word, and must mean that he is trying to be the Czar of America himself, and is also proof that he is a communist, because the Czars were from Russia.

Now, every one of these is absolutely ludicrous, and shouldn't have been dignified with a minute's thought. Yet, they have all been allowed by the press to become significant parts of our national discourse. It's a wonder that the Democrats have managed to accomplish anything at all with their majority power, when they need to wade through this ocean of muck to get anything done.

Saint McCain- Thank God He Didn't Win

John McCain today:

"It seems to me that President Carter has earned his place as if not the worst president in history, the worst president of the 20th Century."

Listen, you lying dick, did Jimmy Carter kill a million people in a war of aggression? Did he come as close as humanly possible to starting a new depression? Did he turn the Justice Department over to a bunch of lunatic political hacks? Did he deliver a near mortal blow to the middle class? Did he disgrace and humiliate our country here and abroad with almost everything he ever said or did? Did he pick a violent criminal madman for his vice president, and then let this prick run roughshod over him and everyone else who got in his way? Did he turn the White House into a bazaar for every corrupt corporation in the world? Did he let someone attack our country, and then not bother to catch and punish that person, while he was using our armed forces to settle a personal score in another country that posed no threat to us?

No he didn't, Senator McCain. But I know someone who did.

Republican Whining Continues

The right wing pseudo-outrage of the day, all over the wingnut web:

"Surrender: Obama Betrays Eastern European Allies, Scraps Promised Missile Defense"

Translation: Obama decides not to use Poland and the Czech republic as dumping grounds for an assortment of useless, non functional science fiction junk, produced by our defense industry at great expense to the American taxpayers, despite decades of evidence that it didn't have a snowball's chance in hell of ever working.

What a disgrace, huh?

This replaces yesterday's outrage, the claim that Acorn members were helping pimps and prostitutes bring underage illegal aliens into the country as sex slaves. That one was based on a secret tape made by two right wing plants, who "disguised" themselves and went into an Acorn office. If you have seen pictures of these two brave people, you would know that they looked like a couple of young Republicans dressed up as low-lives for a high school play. No person with any experience of life could have believed them for a second. So, the Acorn people told them all sorts of ridiculous stuff. One of them even claimed to have murdered her husband. These tapes made great watching on Fox news etc. for several days, until finally someone bothered to check, and what do you know? The lady's husband was alive and well! At that point the Acorn people admitted that they had been having the intrepid "investigative" reporters on, and so there is nary a sign of this story today. And then their great Czar whinefest blew up in their faces when it turned out that Bush had more Czars than Obama. So, they really needed to find something fast to whine about. Well, here it is. Lucky us, huh?

More Orly

Someone stop me! I can't help myself!

This, today, from Orly Taitz, in response to her latest judicial humiliation:

"I am in court fighting to make sure this country doesn’t turn into another Communist Hell, as I experienced as a child, so we don’t live under Dictator Obama with all his szars like another Himler or Herring or another Beria."

God protect us from the szars. And what will ever happen if we fall into the hands of another herring? Oh wait, herrings don't have hands. Thank heaven- I've already got enough to worry about.

And, in response, she received this e-mail which she thoughtfully reproduced on her website:

"I have challanged Judge Land to a round of “Fist a Cuff’s” in the Couthouse Square, via E-mail… I told him that I might possibly beat some sense into him….The man has insulted Me,U and 1/2 the Citizenry of the United States, by tossing ur case and calling it “Frivolous”….No such thing as a Stupid Question, and I want to know who or what this thing in the Whitehouse is…. I will let u know what Judge Land’s response is…"

1/2 the Citizenry of the United States. Uh huh. That would be counting the 100 million or so who turned out at the Washington teabag party, I guess.

"Who or what this thing in the Whitehouse is." What, they have a cockroach problem? And listen, guy, as to what Judge Land's response will be, I'd put my bet on a 72 hour psychiatric hold.

As the guy said in the old oil well movie, "Watch it! She's gonna Blow!"

Sucker of the Week

Here he is: Senator Max Baucus.

The perfect example of the spineless, utterly lacking in principle, worthless Democrat we have come to know so well over the last thirty years or so.

This total fool allowed the Republicans to lure and lie him into producing a health care reform bill which is, unbelievably, worse than the current mess, and which in fact consists of nothing but a gigantic, trillion dollar gift to the health insurance companies, with absolutely nothing to help the American people, or to deal with the disastrous economics of our current system. They led him around by the nose with promises of bipartisan support that no one over the age of five could have possibly found credible, so he could try to make himself look like the hero, by delivering one or two Republican votes for a bill so damaged that it must make the insurance companies jump for joy.

So, Max, you sold your soul, and what did you get in return? Ten Republican votes? Five? One? No, you got nothing. Zero. You got a kick in the face for all your effort.

And here's the crazy thing. Any person with a brain in his head could have told you right at the beginning that that was what was going to happen. Every time you deal with Republicans, all you walk away with is a knife in your back. You've been in the Senate for thirty years, Max. Didn't you ever notice that? All you have accomplished is to do everything you could to derail the the greatest Democratic victory in forty years.

Proud of yourself, you stupid, corrupt ass?

A Little Wingnut Wrapup

Really, I am so sick of our entire political discourse being reduced to nothing but refuting one gigantic Republican lie after another, taking a little damage with every new delusion they spread. And of course this is because anyone who knows the truth will support the Democratic alternative on every issue, so they have to create enough noise to utterly erase reality from the public forum.

Well, here's some of the noise that attracted my attention today:

Tristan Yates, Pajamas Media: "The Uselessness of Paul Krugman"

Because Tristan Yates, self-described financial consultant, is so much more knowledgeable in the area of economics than an ignorant poser like Nobel Prize winning Princeton Economics Professor Paul Krugman. This is proven by the fact that, although Professor Krugman is always right about things, he is also always liberal; whereas Tristan Yates, while admittedly always wrong about things, is always conservative. Q.E.D!

John Rosenthal, Pajamas Media: "Neo-Nazis Join Islamists at Al-Quds Day Demonstration in Berlin"

No talk about the neo-Nazis that joined all of the tea parties. I wonder why that might be? I saw a bunch of them at the ones I went to. They sure weren't trying to hide or anything. Maybe it doesn't fit in with Mr. Rosenthal's premise that Nazis are really liberals? So, of course liberals would join in with Islamic religious fanatics, since everyone knows the religious are all liberals.

Wait, what did I say there? I might have to think this line of reasoning over.

Charlie Martin, Pajamas Media: "March on Washington: How Big Was the Crowd?"

For anyone who still needs more lies about that sordid subject.

Ben Stein, Newsmax: "Thank You, Mr. President, for Reviving GOP"

Right on there, Ben- in the last few weeks, the Republicans have gone from 20% approval all the way up to a sky high, what was it? Oh, yeah, 22%! They're on the march now. By 2010, maybe they will be all the way up to 25%! Particularly if you count all of those millions that showed up at the teabag march.

Helen Valois, Renew America: "Making Nazis Weep"

My executive summary of this splendid opinion piece:

Nazi Nazi Pelosi Obama Nazi Terry Sciavo Nazi Obama Auschwitz Death Panels Nazi Obama Hitler Hitler Hitler More Auschwitz More Nazi Abortion Hitler Dreams from my Father, Mein Kampf Obama Lie Hitler Obama kill sick Concentration Camp Kill Granny Obama Nazi

I guess that told them.

And, now a word from one of Green Eagle's favorite Loons, Pam Schuffert:

"The call is going forth as never before for an increase in GOD'S PRAYER WARRIORS and INTERCESSORS!

I was traveling to perform journalism and investigation regarding coming martial law across the nation, and lectured in OREGON. We followed this with powerful intercessory prayer. The Holy Spirit then gave one intercessor an inspired WORD OF KNOWLEDGE:

"Thus saith the Lord: Had it not been for MY PRAYER WARRIORS PRAYING that I would HOLD BACK Martial Law from your nation, YOUR NATION WOULD BE UNDER MARTIAL LAW RIGHT NOW!"

I'm sure you are glad to know that.

Sorry that I couldn't put that in my usual red type there, or you would lose the value of my careful reproduction of Pam's love of varied typography.

This kind of thing is usually (seriously) a sign of paranoid delusions, but really, how far is it from the rest of the stuff I put in here? These guys are really walking close to the edge of the cliff.

And a final note: A Georgia judge has angrily thrown out Orly Taitz's latest idiotic birther lawsuit, telling her that he is going to take action against her if she ever shows up in his courtroom again with nonsense like that. Don't worry, though. She's already filed another almost identical lawsuit in another state. One of these days, she might even find a judge senile enough to fall for it (before she's disbarred for deliberate fraud.)

And a little more Orly. I can't resist.... In an interview today, she had this to say:

"somebody should consider trying [the judge] for treason ...Not every judge is as corrupt as Judge Land."

Orly, If I were you, I would think twice in the future about appearing again before Judge Land. Just some well-meant advice.

Antichrist

Start your day off with a bang:

"Fourteen percent of Republicans think Obama is the Anti-Christ. Fifteen percent are not sure."

And this is in New Jersey. Imagine what the numbers are in Arkansas.

It sickens me to think that fourteen percent of Republicans think anybody is the anti-christ, let alone this obviously well-meaning, serious man. What a bunch of losers.

David Vitter Solves the Health Care Crisis

This serious contribution to our national health care discussion, from the well-known Senator and moralist, David Vitter:

"U.S. Sen. David Vitter has endorsed a new study from a conservative think tank that calls for scrapping the nation's employer-based health insurance system in favor of individually owned policies and converting the Medicaid program into vouchers for private insurance."

Remember a couple of years ago when they wanted to do that sort of thing with Social Security? Boy, they never give up, do they?

I wonder if there is an undiscovered provision in Vitter's plan that allows people to spend their health care vouchers on prostitutes. That would certainly explain things.

Or, it could just be that he is just unbelievably, stupendously greedy?

He is a Republican, so it's hard to say.

Sick Joke of the Day

Dennis Prager, Dennis Prager....is there anyone on earth more dishonest?

Things you would never know if you never listened to Dennis' radio show:

"So far, in the opposition to Obama, we have seen nothing of the violence and hatred that we see from the other side."

What can you say? I guess the guy must get paid plenty to claim in public that he believes stuff like this.

Musing on the Market

I'm certainly no expert on this subject, but I just happened to notice today that the market is up another 56 points, to 9683. This represents a 48% gain in the Dow in six months, since its low of 6547 on March 9th, a month and a half into Obama's term.

That seems like a pretty spectacular gain to me. At this rate, the Dow could essentially double in value in a year. Does anybody know if there have been other such relatively sustained periods of growth in the Dow of this magnitude since, say, 1940?

This got me thinking that with a little more good news, we could be closing in on 10,000 in a month or two. You'd think that getting the Dow back into five figures for the first time since (I think) last October 3, would be a tremendous psychological event.

I'm so looking forward to the heaps of praise that the ever- serious business minded Republicans will heap on President Obama and the Dems in Congress, for rescuing the country from the economic catastrophe brought on by George W. (Don't you DARE call him a conservative!) Bush.

Why We Need a Public Option

The insurance companies are thieves, and they need to be punished severely. Otherwise, they will never stop their criminal behavior.

That's what government is for, right? To protect us from predators.

How Many Teabaggers Were There?

I know I seem really long-winded about last Saturday's Washington D.C. Teabag party. I just want to make sure that, as far as possible, we figure out just how many people were there, because the teabaggers are claiming that their ludicrously inflated numbers indicate a powerful national movement.

I think otherwise. I think the entire tea party thing has been, largely, a synthetically generated hoax, using a group of pathetic, frightened white suckers to advance the interests of big business. Here's my case for this particular event.

I have scoured right wing websites for pictures showing the largest number of people, and will now attempt to guess at the number of people they show. The largest number of people by far are to be seen in this photo and a couple like it, showing teabaggers marching down Pensylvania Avenue. The shot shows the area from the point where Pennsylvania Avenue turns to go past the White House, down the street to somewhere close to the Capitol. How far they go is unclear, as the photos are quite fuzzy. Here it is:

Now, the Teabaggers' argument, which they used to justify their claim that between a million and two million people showed up. The back end of this parade is about as far from the Capitol as the back end of the crowd at Obama's inaugural, which is believed to have been between 1.2 and 1.8 million. So, say the teabaggers, they must have turned out the same number of people.

Let's look at a map of Washington D.C. to see how reasonable that claim is (as if you couldn't guess.)

The area in red shows the approximate size of the crowd that attended Obama's inaugural, occupying the mall, the two adjacent streets and the space across the streets up to the adjacent buildings, and the area in front of the Capitol. The area in dark blue indicates the maximum extent of the area of Pennsylvania Ave. shown in the teabagger photo. In fact, this map, like most urban maps, exaggerates the width of streets, in order to fit their names in, so if anything, it favors the Teabaggers.

Notice anything about the map? Yes, it's true that the teabagger march was as long as the Obama inauguration, but it was (in my estimate) about one eighth as wide. So, if we take a middling estimate of the attendance at the inauguration of 1.5 million, we are down already to a maximum of about 180,000. Now, consider that walking people, like those on Pennsylvania Avenue, take about twice as much room each as the people crowded closely together on the frozen mall last January 20th, and you are down to 90,000 or so, assuming that the crowd in the blurry picture reached as far as I have shown. That is, unless large parts of the crowd were goose stepping in close formation. If anyone who was there could confirm this, I will be willing to raise my estimate, but otherwise, I believe we are looking at no more than 90,000 people, and likely less- a number very close to D.C. Fire Department estimates of 60-70,000.

As a bonus, I have also indicated in light blue what I remember to be the extent of the last antiwar march in Washington, which I attended, and which is believed to have had an attendance of about 350,000. The people were somewhat more dispersed, as is common at large demonstrations, but again, the area they occupied dwarfs the teabagger rally.

Let's also remember that 2-400,000 of the attendees at the Obama inauguration were in the large area between the Capitol and the mall, so my rough calculation again actually favors the teabaggers. A more accurate count would undoubtedly make the D. C. fire department's estimate look very good indeed.

Some guesswork involved here? Yeah, but guesswork sure beats baloney.

Now, one final picture. This one is from Crooks and Liars, and I already stole it on Saturday. It's the only picture that I found that looks away from the Capitol, and it tells a sorry story:

The second picture is, of course, a telephoto picture of the Obama inaugural. The first one appears to be taken on the mall, fairly close to the Capitol, looking toward the Washington monument, showing just about nobody. You know, I saw on a couple of scumbag right wing blogs, pictures showing the mess left behind on the mall by the inaugural, contrasted with the neatness left behind by the teabaggers. I guess this photo explains why.

Okay, that's enough of that. Of course, this evidence will have no effect whatsoever on the teabaggers, who willingly believe that Obama is a Marxist Muslim Hitler who is bent on killing everyone's granny, and who also believe that the world is 6000 years old, and that...well, you know the rest. After that, convincing themselves that this pathetic demonstration is Teh Biggest Demonstration In The History Of The World is easy.

Well, just for the record, there it is. Thanks to any of you who made it this far.

A Comment on The Continuity of Lunacy on the Right

Here is a really great article from Glenn Greenwald reminding us that the outbreak of conservative lunacy directed toward Obama is hardly without precedent.

Greenwald takes us on a little stroll down memory lane, reminding us of the deluge of baseless conservative attacks suffered by Bill Clinton. I would like to add that he might have gone farther back to discover the same sort of thing being directed at Carter, whose legitimacy they managed to totally destroy, and above all towards Franklin Delano Roosevelt. In fact, since the total takeover of the party by monied interests at the time of Taft, driving Teddy Roosevelt, the trust busting environmentalist whom they still insist on claiming as one of their own, out of their party forever, this has been their staple in politics.

And the phenomenon is hardly an American one. Anyone familiar with the Weimar Republic, and the hounding to death of its first leader, Friedrich Ebert, by literally hundreds of false charges, will see a similarity. In fact, this sort of behavior is a natural outgrowth of the right wing mindset, with its manichean need to cast the enemy as utterly evil, and to see itself as noble defenders of society, entitled to any means to accomplish their (allegedly God-given) task.

Bye Bye Democrats

All our work. The fact that the American public is on our side on almost every issue. The manifest disasters produced by eight years of Republican rule. The clear fact that the Republican party has given in to a vicious, willing madness. All of it means nothing. The Republican party is going to take back Congress and the White house by 2012.

How is this going to happen? Well, it's a long story, going back to Richard Nixon, and two southern crackers named Haynesworth and Carswell.

Don't recognize them? They were two racists sons of bitches that Nixon tried to put on the Supreme Court. When the Democratic congress had the sense to throw both of them into the trash can, Nixon just went ahead and appointed an even worse racist, in-the-pockets-of-the-rich jerk, William Rehnquist. On the third try, the Democrats ran out of steam and let Nixon have his way.

From this time dated the era in which Republican presidents did not for a second consider the interests of the country in carrying out one of their most important duties, nominating to the court the most corrupt right wing justices they could ram down people's throats. Thus, we have Scalia and Thomas, Alito and Roberts, tools of the wealthy, sitting on our court.

Criminal right wing Supreme Court justices gave us the disaster of the Bush administration. Now they are about to do something far worse. Using a bogus appeal from a right wing group, they are about to do away with the rule, in existence almost since the beginning of our country, making it illegal for corporations to spend money on political candidates.

It cannot be overstated what a disaster this decision will be. From now on in the United States, every national election will be overwhelmed with corporate money, shouting down any real voice of the people. This ruling, which the five corrupt Republican justices seem determined to make, will be a disaster for the American people, and there is absolutely nothing we can do to prevent it. Thus, the will of the vast majority will once again be frustrated by Republican corruption.

And, by the way, tell me again, which party follows precedent, and which legislates from the bench?

And More

Davis Shuster's Twitter comment, courtesy of County Fair:

" "Freedomworks says their dc demonstration attracted 30,000 people. Park police official says that is being 'generous.' "

And this, from Crooks and Liars:

"For reference, I crossed 3rd Street and took a picture facing west from the Capitol at the Washington Monument, similar to some of the crowd shots we'd seen after the inauguration. Here's the difference between the teabaggers' protest today vs. President Obama's inaguration crowd, which included anywhere from 1 million to 1.5 million people."

Here's the picture:

Ha Ha Ha.

More to come, I'm sure.

UPDATE: Just a little perspective here. A single speech by Obama on the same day, in Minneapolis drew an estimated 15,000 people- about a quarter of what months of preparation and publicity netted the teabaggers. Sure there are some suckers who have fallen for this and really believe all the lies, but in the end, the whole teabagging movement is essentially a gigantic hoax, willingly abetted by the mainstream media.

Teabaggers and the Press, part 2

Your serious, liberal beltway media. From Media Matters:

"Behold the media's glaring double standard. Today, the Post puts the "tens of thousands" of Obama-hating tea bagger protesters on A1; makes it the lead story as a matter of fact. Back in 2002, when more than 100,000 anti-war protesters gathered in the nation's capitol to protest the Bush administration, the same Wash. Post did its best to ignore them..."

And by the way, I repeat again, having been at the last big Bush-era protest, "More than 100,000" in this case is 3-400,000; official counts of yesterday's hatefest come in at 60-70,000.

And, I have to throw in here a great link to pictures of this event, by Oliver Willis. Good for a laugh or two. I'm looking myself for long shots so we can make some kind of guess of the real size of the crowd. For anyone that cares, in a day or two I will show the ones with the most people in them.

Tea Baggers Get Attention, For Some Reason

From the New York Times (and no, I'm not going to waste the 15 seconds it would take to link to this article:)

"A sea of protesters filled the west lawn of the Capitol and spilled onto the National Mall on Saturday in the largest rally against President Obama since he took office, a culmination of a summer-long season of protests that began with an opposition to health care and grew into a broader dissatisfaction with government.

The crowd numbered well into the tens of thousands, though police declined to provide an estimate of the size of the crowd. Many of the participants simply came on their own and were not part of an organization or group. But the size of the rally took the authorities by surprise, with throngs of people streaming from the White House to Capitol Hill for more than three hours."

You just know that similar stories, replete with mock amazement, are going to fill all of the supposedly serious media.

I was at a rally against Bush a couple of years ago, that had not "tens of thousands" but three to four hundred thousand people. The mainstream media hardly saw fit to dignify it with any coverage at all.

If the size of this rally took anyone by surprise, it was surprise at how few people the right's concerted efforts turned out.

These pathetic wankers have been organizing this thing for months, and have had the backing of a network of lobbyists and highly financed astroturf organizations, as well as such "news" outlets as Fox. This turnout is totally pathetic; and yet you know that our press is going to tell us that it is some sign of momentum on the right.

Any serious person that looks at this has to know that these people represent a miniscule segment of the American people; and they don't have enough dedication to do more than throw an occasional public tantrum. Yet our pathetic press is going to treat this as a serious story about a substantial and rational segment of our population.

UPDATE: As I mentioned in the comments section, the Washington D.C. Fire Department estimated the crowd at 60-70,000. ABC, referring to this estimate, used the same numbers. I now read that the head of the organization that led the demonstration is claiming that ABC estimated the crowd at a million to a million and a half- a bald faced lie. Michelle Malkin is claiming two million. It will be interesting, over the next few days, to see what lies they spin out to cover the miserable failure of their great national event.

BUT WAIT-THERE'S MORE: The momentum builds! The momentum of the Conservative Lie Machine:

World Net Daily: "A million or more rock Washington- Taxpayer march could be biggest rally ever in capital"

Red State: "2 million people showed up in Washington, DC to protest the leftward drift of this country"

Pammy the Human Baboon (sorry, I can't help myself): "Millions on the Mall"

How high can the numbers go? Only time will tell. Pammy is in the lead now, but let's see how things develop in the next few days.
